So Amazon lost a bunch of money lol All Amazon does is leverage services that they hope will bring in more sales to pay for the losses of the services.

PRIME
KINDLE (It worked)
KINDLE FIRE

But if you leverage these future earning services one on top of the other you have cut your margins to the bone and taken a big risk.

Amazon is the undercutting king and wants to sell products no matter what. Now they give you a refund before they inspect the product you are returning. This may work out for them in the long run but look at their earning reports last quarter. Gross Sales up 44% at 10.93 BILLION Net Earnings Down 77% at 63 Million.

They sold almost a 11 Billion in goods to make 63 Million dollars.

Amazon was smart to make a tablet at a much lower price level as the iPad... I think that was the major reason for the demise of other tablets. By making it so much cheaper they are going to sell a ton... Had they packed it with features and hardware and made it closer to the iPad price they would have gotten crushed as well.

The more competition the iPad has, the more they are forced to innovate and step it up. I'm all for the Fire being a success. ;)

I know it's crazy isn't it.

Can you imagine a world that was like the Hardened Apple fans want.

Only Apple makes computer and tablets, phones and TV's.

Can you imagine how slow they would be to bring out new gear. Milking old hardware for years if they did not have any competition.

Funny how some people would hate it, if their dream ever came thru :)

And just as amusing that some Apple fans reject comparing the single Amazon model to the most comparable iPad model (the 16Gig wifi model) and want to include the entire Apple product line to beef up the iPad numbers.

Sort of like the Android fans who claim "Android beats Apple!" when they are comparing 2 gazillion different variants of Android OS to just a few iOS makes/models.

As the saying goes....

"Statistics is a science...but lying with statistics is an art."

First successful GUI
Ditching serial in favor of USB
Ditching floppies

The list goes on and goes back a long time...

I assume your point is that when Apple is faced with stiff competition it innovates, right? Especially when it doesn't have a large installed base to satisfy.

Indeed. I applauded Amazon the when I first read an unveiling article on the Fire. Some people I knew scoffed at them saying it was just gonna be a cheap piece of junk nobody but a subset of Kindle customers would buy, but I knew they were smart in realizing that its probably foolish to try to compete with the iPad head on (I mean, just look around, the evidence is out there). For such a powerful line that is the iPad, you've got to offer attractive value at an attractive, highly competitive price. I'm not surprised the Kindle is doing well for them (and am happy it is).

Personally, its too customized of an Android tablet for my tastes (to the point where its unrecognizable as one if you didn't know any better), however, for what it is, I do think it offers great value for those looking for a simple, affordable tablet and are Amazon Prime subscribers.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when the iPad 3 comes out in the spring. I'm thinking they'll sell the iPad 2 much more prominently than they did with the original iPad upon the second's release. It would be a smart step to step a bit closer into the "cheap" tablet market, like what Apple does by selling previous models of the iPhone.

Question, where was the "stiff competition" when the iPad debuted?

Apple's main competitor is itself. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it doesn't.

Apple's main competitor is itself. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it doesn't.

The point being made was that most of Apple's "innovations" cited in the previous post were associated with devices that were struggling to gain market share against entrenched competition. Nothing wrong with that. That's what competition is supposed to trigger. Likewise, the "stiff competition" faced by Apple when the iPad was introduced was the fact that it held small portion of the laptop market and an even smaller portion of the entire PC market.

The iPad made a market for a device that didn't exist when it was introduced and has been a phenomenal success. Whether it retains its ability to innovate in a market niche it dominates has yet to be demonstrated.

The net income went down mainly because of development and business expanding cost. It does not mean Amazon has been selling products at a lower margin (or at loss).

That is part of decreasing a products margin. When you increase advertising or services to increase your sales yes you are. Any extra costs you spend to sell come out of the products bottom line.

I do business with Amazon and they lose money on alot of Prime shipments and Special sales in hopes for your long term business. Unlike most loss leaders they are not trying to buy your one sale. They are spending more to buy you as a customer. If you don't believe me do some research it is well documented of Amazons ruthless tactics.

Amazon even undercuts and competes with thier own merchants. Fulfilled by Amazon is hilarious because all the sales they fulfill for you come in Amazon branded boxes and Amazon branded labels. That way they get your repeat customers not you.

I-Pad and Tablet Fire for your TV

Has anyone heard if you can integrate the I-pad or Tablet Fire with your TV? Another words can you use it kind of like a TV controller so to speak….

Skittles candy just reported they are the number one selling candy. The ranking:

1. Skittles
2. Brown M&m's
3. Red M&m's
4. Blue M&m's
5. Yellow M&m's
Etc...

Kindle Fire not a total failure

The iPad is ranked 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 on the top sellers, so as a whole it's still beating the Fire by a huge margin. Still, I'm pretty impressed.

This reminds me a little bit of the way RIAA certifies best-selling albums. They count by number of discs, so every copy of The Beatles' White Album that ships counts twice against every copy of Abbey Road. That means officially, the White Album outsold Abbey Road 19 million units to 12 million units even though there were actually only 9.5 million copies of the White Album sold. It's "fun with numbers".

That's nothing, wait till the current quarter is done. They're planning to sell way more in order to lose 200 Million!

We have loads of tablets in my house.

Currently I have an iPad; iPad 2; Blackberry playbook, my dad has the Galaxy tab; iPad 2 and a playbook and my mom has an iPad 1 and 2.

There is a Kindle Fire on the way to my house, which I had to order from a friend because I live in Canada. I'm goign to compare them, because currently the playbook is the only semi-compareable tablet to my iPads. I paid $199 for my playbook because I work at BestBuy, and get awesome discounts. It's not an overall bad tablet to be honest, and once the new software which opens up the entire android marketplace comes to the playbook, it should boost it.

Considering the Fire comes with no camera, and none fo the accessories that iPads and other tablets have, it seems just a little too plain.

Well, I'm sure Amazon will also be counting returned Fires, which are then resold as part of the number game. So a loss of $200 million is easily acheivable. The next quarter will be a bloodbath for Amazon. All the returned Fires that were xmas presents should really Boost their stock price after the quarterly earnings report.

Most people that wanted an iPad 2 bought one already. It's been out for what, 8 months already?

The Fire looks nice and if I was a huge Amazon and Kindle books reader, I would get one...and I have an iPad 2 (that is mainly hogged by my kid).

Sales figures definitely dont mean that the Fire is a good product.
Same goes for a bad movie that is #1 at the box office for weeks that many believe sucks.

this just in! purple Ford outsells purple Hondas because there are no purple Hondas!!!
that's how much merit this article has.
