1/ the theft only have to steal the iphone just to have access to the mac

2/ knocking on the iphone repeatedly is definitely not a smart idea

Just make sure you remember to knock the back of your iPhone!

Unless you have a naked iPhone 4S, that is. Given how easily I've seen the backs of iPhone 4/4S break, knocking it anywhere is probably best avoided.

iPhones aren't made of papier-mâché you know.

Did everyone on here fail physics? I'm surprised by the number of people that think knocking on their iPhone is dangerous in any form or fashion. All the "I cringed when he knocked on the glass of the phone" and "knocking on your phone isn't good, that's common sense" comments are ridiculous.

Your iPhone is not that fragile. Glass doesn't break by knocking on it. There's no internal moving components, like a hard drive, that are susceptible to an impact. The amount of force in a typical knock is likely a tenth of the force needed to cause any damage at all to your phone. I guarantee you that your phone gets similar forces applied to it on a regular basis in normal use.

I decided to get it just to try it out, its actually very easy to unlock, I accidentally unlocked by picking my iPhone 5 off the table.
It also works on just tapping. So don't worry about knocking hard!

I will continue to use this however, living in a uni house everyone is trying to hack others computers etc as pranks. This is going to help greatly!

if the phone is flat on the table, can you just tap the back of the phone while? I don't want to have to pick the phone up and I also don't want to have to knock too hard.

My iPhone has a cracked screen. I knocked. Cut my hand. Bleeding

Just called my lawyer..

there is no remedy for stupid unfortunately. (i know you were joking, I was too)

I installed the software on my 2012 macbook pro, downloaded the app on my iPhone 5s, turned bluetooth on both devices, and started the program and app.
The message on the mac says download the app from the app store, my iPhone 5s says it take two to tango and I need the software on the mac.

Nothing is happening after that, I have let it set for 5 minutes no change. I restarted the mac and turned off the iPhone and still nothing.

Any ideas?

Same here. Mid 2012 MBP. I've been googling without much luck. At one point the app told me that my machine didn't support Bluetooth 4.0 but when I searched my specs on Apple.com it says it does. Hmmm...

Anyone tried this with multiple Mac user accounts/profiles? I'm interested in knowing if it would work by setting it up on two iPhones with one Mac that has two system profiles. Knocking on one phone would unlock one profile, knocking on the other phone unlocks the second profile. It's a definite buy for me if that would work so that my wife and I could instantly unlock our own profiles with our own phones.

They should do a Chuck Norris version, where you need to roundhouse kick your iPhone.

Problems with Knock

Tuesday night I downloaded the MacOS app. Then I tried to buy the iOS app. The app apparently took my $3.99 and supposedly installed. The OPEN button appeared but I cannot get it to respond. I touch OPEN, it changes to blue, but nothing happens.

Today, I can't find the MacOS app on my MacBook Air, athend downloading it from the App Store now costs $1.99.

And, while iTunes says the app is installed on my iPhone 5S, search doesn't find Knock on the iPhone.

So: the iPhone app either took or didn't take my $3.99. In any case, the app isn't there. And on my MacBook, Knock seems to have taken my $1.99 for an app that was free last night and that I downloaded last night and can't find today.

What's going on?

Help!

It won't work how you hope.

The reason is that the Knock app has to be actively running in the background (such as if a screensaver/lock screen activates, all programs continue to run in the background).
If you're at a log in screen, meaning you aren't already logged in (which means Knock isn't running in the background), you can't unlock it with your phone.

Kind of a big limitation I did not know until after the fact.
Many lock screen shortcuts use the fast user switch login screen, and it would not work for this because it means the user is logged off and nothing is running in the background.

So, there are two instances where I found Knock works (also confirmed by their FAQ):
When the screensaver activates and you need a pw to unlock.
When selecting "lock screen" specifically from the Knock icon in the system tray.

All other instances seem to cause Knock to stop working in the background. If it's not running then it's not synced, so it won't unlock.

I guess all this extra info answers your question that no, you won't be able to use this to initially log into a profile, or to quickly switch profiles between you and your wife.

However, if you already logged in manually into your profile with your keyboard the first time, and happen to step away (activating the screen saver lock screen), it will work fine for yourself to re-unlock as many times as you need to, until you log off. You'll just have to initially log in manually that first time every time.

(BTW, sweet Apple setup in your sig. It's time to replace that iPad 3rd gen with an Air! (I just ordered mine to replace my 3rd gen). I almost didn't, but I realized it is laggy, and I understand why it was replaced 6 months later with the iPad 4. If I had an iPad 4, I would probably hold onto it. With the iPad 3, too much of the resources are going just to power that retina screen. Anyway, random rant of me trying to justify my purchase, lol... :))

Mine hasn't turned on..

Thanks, I'll try turning it off. I re-downloaded it and it does indeed ask for permission to use location services to wake up the app when it is near my home (with a promise that it doesn't use up much battery to enable this).
However, I just hate having this icon on all of the time. If it's on all of the time, it may as well not even be there.

I just disabled location services for Knock and the icon disappeared and hasn't appeared since. I'll have to wait until i get home to see if it is still synced and will unlock properly.

Thanks for the info. I may give it a try anyways. My wife and I usually both stay logged in at the same time and just switch profiles based on who's using without actually logging the other person completely out. In that case, based on your info, it would only work if you "knocked" your way back into the last used profile that's still active.

Isn't the app free directly from the website? No need to go into the Mac App Store.

I went to the Apple Store on Sunday and somehow didn't walk out with a new iPad Air. Probably because my wife was with me...

But yeah, I'm gonna upgrade that before the end of the year for sure. Just upgraded my MacBook from a 2008 Black MacBook which was also much overdue.

Yes, its one way I've been using it!

Hmm that's interesting. I didn't want it to know my location so I said no from the beginning, since it's a battery drain most likely.

same. it does not work.

Just thought I'd shout out. If you are on a non BT4.0 enabled Mac, just use a BT4.0 enabled dongle. If you're running Mountain Lion or Mavericks, it should just work. If you're on Lion or below, then I've a guide here to get it running.

Works really great on my BT 4.0 dongle on my 2010 13" MBP.

iPhone 5 and 2012 rMBP: doesn't work.

Linking is successful but unlocking doesn't work even though there's that green ring in the phone (iOS 7.0.3 and Mavericks build 13A598). Have to type password to unlock the rmbp.

And what's funny, the logs says:

Code:
Knock[258]: -[HBLockscreenEfffectsWindow _closeWindow] [Line 108] Ending user activity
Knock[258]: -[HBLockAndSleepController screenDidWake:] [Line 308] Screen did wake
Knock[258]: -[HBLockAndSleepController machineUnlocked:] [Line 293] Machine did Unlock

Should have waited more...

Hi Hannu,
I'm the developer behind Knock. I believe we've fixed your bug in the latest version of the Mac app (1.0.4). Could you give that a shot?

Thanks!
William

Bought it and I do like it. However there is a major drawback which has been pointed out above as well:

You need to actually wake up the display before the Mac communicates with the iPhone App and allows you to use the Knock to unlock the machine. This means you need to touch the keyboard or Mouse anyway.

It would be much neater if you could just walk up to the Mac and unlock by knocking before even sitting down.

This is not really usable for me this way, have not found a workaround. Anyone?

Hi there,
I'm the developer of Knock. We hear you loud and clear on this one, and we are working to include this in a future version.

Best,
William

Hi there,
Could you give me an email at will at knocktounlock dot com? We're looking into this issue right now but we need some more information to track it down.

Thanks!
William
