Apple is planning to launch an updated version in the first half of 2022, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a note to investors.

iPhone-SE-Cosmopolitan-Clean.png

As he has said previously, the design of the new iPhone SE will be "roughly the same" as the existing SE, which is modeled after the iPhone 8.

Kuo says that the new 2022 iPhone SE will support 5G, and it will include processor updates. The device will be positioned as the "cheapest 5G iPhone ever." The most affordable iPhone with 5G right now is the iPhone 12 mini, so presumably the iPhone SE will be a good deal more affordable than the $699 price point of that device.

There have been rumors of an "iPhone SE Plus" with a larger display and a Touch ID power button, which Kuo has also mentioned in the past, but there's no word of this bigger iPhone SE in Kuo's note and we haven't heard new details about it for some time, so it is not clear if it's been scrapped or is something that's coming at a later date.

Kuo also previously said that Apple is developing a new version of the iPhone 11 with a 6-inch LCD, Face ID support, and 5G, and it's possible thst this future device, which is said to be launching in 2023, will also be in the SE family.

There is no specific word on when we can expect the next-generation iPhone SE, but the first half of 2022 perhaps suggests a spring event.

Relabeling a previous generation of the iPhone as SE is a smart marketing move. People who are more focused on colors and model names than tech specs think they're getting an up-to-the-minute phone!

Brilliant. And great for Apples' senior management and big shareholders.

I really hope that the next SE is modeled after the iPhone X or 12, because I love apple, but im not as much as an enthusiast as previous years, especially since the "Pro" version of the iPhone seems to always to be targetted at camera quality and photographers, which i'm not interested in.

I don't feel like i've missed any features with my Apple Watch SE, so once the iPhone SE gets Face ID / OLED, that will be my weapon of choice for a while.

Roughly the same design as the current SE? Oh please no Apple. That means the same tiny battery. That's not good, especially in 2022.

Here's hoping for the SE Plus being based on the XR/11, with battery life that is actually useful for modern smartphone usage.

You have this exactly backward. The SE models haven't been old spec devices with new styling. They're old styling with new spec components.

Once again well done Mr Kuo for stating the globally obvious that the iPhone 13 will have upgrades over the 12.!!!

hats off to him for earning an income by issuing to investors complete hearsay and speculation

They usually launch the SE generations half a year after the main flagships. They didn't release a new SE this year (because why would they, there was just one last year) - so the next time we could see a new one is next 2022 year.

This updated SE2 with 5G and updated processor will sell like hotcakes at £399. Ill definitely get one to add to the collection, but they better increase the battery size! If they keep the same 1800 mH battery, it will die within 3-4 hours if using 5G.

Another f boring phone with the old touch button, sigh.

I bought the SE 2020, i had hope for the SE 3 (Getting rid of the old case and button) and again in 2022 they will be using the same old model.

They do not have disagrace but we all know that at this point. Good luck selling them...

Literally, the ONLY thing I care about in the SE is size and price. If they make it any bigger at all, I will just keep keeping my 2016 iPhone SE alive - it's on it's 4th battery and 2nd screen.

I would buy the iPhone 12 mini, but I'm not spending $700 on any phone ever, and it's still too big. I already have a laptop. My phone should be small.

Seeing how the 12 was “the first 5G iPhone ever,” I’m not seeing why that statement is as big of a deal as kuo thinks it is.
