Kuo says that the new 2022 iPhone SE will support 5G, and it will include processor updates. The device will be positioned as the "cheapest 5G iPhone ever." The most affordable iPhone with 5G right now is the iPhone 12 mini, so presumably the iPhone SE will be a good deal more affordable than the $699 price point of that device.
So it'll be at least $399 as well, just like how the 1st gen and 2nd gen SE started at $399. But if it's based on iPhone 8 design again, it'll only have a single lens camera. And if it's like the 2nd gen iPhone SE, it'll get the previous flagship iPhone's chip.... which means the 5G iPhone SE will have a A14 like how the 2nd gen iPhone SE got the A13 from the iPhone 11.

If that's the case then I'd rather buy a gently used iPhone 12 mini instead. By the time it comes out in 2022, a gently used iPhone 12 mini will be around the same price or a tiny bit more than a 5G iPhone SE, but more importantly the iPhone 12 mini will have a larger and higher resolution display (and a super retina one at that) with a smaller body, a dual lens camera set-up, MagSafe, etc.

That's when the AppleCare+ runs out for my 2020 iPhone SE that I got on a Memorial Day sale.

If they repeat that sale, I won't have paid much of anything for a phone for four years. I paid US$150 extra for the 256GB version but every month, it's free.

These smaller iPhones are a godsend, the 16:9 aspect ratio is a poor ergonomic form factor. Both in terms of weight distribution and reach-ability. I hope the iPad aspect ratio sets a new standard for mobile devices as well. Movies on Mobile aren’t as important as the inconvenience of reaching to the top corner of the screen for buttons. Split screen gaming is often overlooked, but an essential part of a vibrant social lifestyle in the 21st and half century!!! Lol sorry things got a little duck-dodgers there at the end ha ha.

Another f boring phone with the old touch button, sigh.

I bought the SE 2020, i had hope for the SE 3 (Getting rid of the old case and button) and again in 2022 they will be using the same old model.

They do not have disagrace but we all know that at this point. Good luck selling them...
A problem might be that there isn’t really an alternative. If they reuse the iPhone 8 Plus design at $400, it will simply be way too successful. Cheap iPhone, last processor, 5G, big screen, why pay hundreds of dollars more for the iPhone 13? Reusing the design of the iPhone XR is even more out of the question, obviously.

Reusing the iPhone 12 mini design would be interesting, but in that case they need to give it an LCD screen to keep costs down, and replace Face ID with Touch ID on the power button. However, the idea of the SE is to reuse an old design, so that’s not going to happen either.

So they have to keep using the 4.7" design. Just my theory.

it's also cost savings to keep profitability

by now the iPhone "classic" design has been in manufacturing process for 7 years. Alongside manufacturing something for so long comes efficiencies and economies of scale.

if they wanted to make the new "SE" the mini, it would require development work, redesign, and a whole bunch of R&D to essentially create it.

why do that when you can continue printing the same basic phone for 7+ years without ever having to change tooling?

I'd like to see an iPhone SE mini. The SE range is where mini size and mini price make more sense.

And pretty please Apple, change the design! I can't stand anymore this design introduced years ago with the iPhone 6.

um it will use A15 since it will be out after the 13 lineup like how 2nd Gen SE got A13 after 11 lineup was released and first Gen SE got the A9 after the 6s/6s+ was released. Where did you get A14 from?. If it got A14 It would of been out between iPhone 12 and 13’s release

and to those who are bitching about the older design (and to a certain member who foolishly said “good luck with sales” then you all will be delighted to know SE 2020 is ( since it was reported a few months ago) the second best selling smartphone of last year… with that same old design

it will sell well don’t you worry

The 10 most developed countries are much much penetrated markets for smartphones. There is room for growth but the market is MUCH less fertile for growth. In these countries there tend to be iPhone purchases and the Samsung higher end phones. Apple has a substantial amount of the market in these countries.

The extremely fertile ground for growth is below the 10 most developed countries. These counties usually have very very small iPhone/iOS presence. Apple either provides a lower cost iPhone to gather a small slice (but still a bigger than almost no slice) of these markets or sees stunted overall growth. There is no way Android isn't going to be massive in almost all of these markets but Apple may be able to grab 6 or 7 percent

Ming-Chi Kuo is probably the owner of MacRumors who loves to write articles in third person ROFL LMAO!

It’s battery won’t last that long if they put 5G. If they use the XR body and rename it as SE, it would be good

I'd agree, but by 2022 Apple will either be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 or its own modem chip, both of which will likely use way less power than the current Snapdragon X55 used on the iPhone 12 models.

Apple's least costly iPhone could still be the mini. Set the price at $300 and make the iPhone mini as small is it needs to be for this price. Perhaps small enough to fit in that small pocket in typical jeans.

I'm on T-Mobile in NYC and my reception seems to get worse every year. My new 5G Pro Max loses its signal entirely on one stretch of my daily run. The area is about 100 meters from a busy road and populous neighborhood. I had a more reliable signal a decade ago.

Like my 2020 SE with the exception it does not have the U1 chip.
If the 2022 SE does not have the U1 and a styling update Ill probably see if I can find an iPhone 13 mini.
Of course the 2022 SE could be a rebranded Mini since apple already has the tooling.

Make it plastic, give it a removable battery, add an sd card slot, make it thicker and slightly larger, go ahead and keep the same old processor in it, keep the the same SE price, and you will have an iPhone that would outsell all the others. Making a cheap device and having a device Apple thinks is cheap are two different things.

The iPhone 5S/SE1 design ran from 2013 to 2018 before being discontinued.

The iPhone 6/6S/7/8/SE2 was released in 2014, so next year that design would've been around for eight years.

I think they should make the SE3 look like the iPhone 12.
