I don't even notice or care about the Notch.

Is there anyone who feels similarly? I think I'm probably in the minority.
Same here. I don't care that my phone has a notch.

The notch holds an array of lenses, sensors, and a speaker so the only way the notch disappears is if the phone gets notch-sized top and bottom bezels. What's more likely is that Apple will decrease the width of the notch.

TLDR - The notch isn't going to stop me from upgrading to a new phone in a year or two.

Sounds interesting but I would treat this rumor which is two years away with a wall of caution
After all it’s two years out and Apple changes things this far away
Also if this rumor is true. Will it add thickness to the iPhone, will it protrude. There’s alot of unanswered questions about an unsubstantiated rumor

I wished the article explained how a periscope lens works in such a thin enclosure.
The periscope is horizontal relative to the body of the phone - light comes in through the lens, immediately hits a 90-degree mirror/prism that directs the light down a tube that runs some distance along the length or width of the phone body. The thinness of smartphones means conventional lenses mounted on the front of back of the phone are limited in just how long "long" they can be - only wide angle and very short telephoto lenses. By adding a 90-degree bend, the lens can be much longer (true telephoto).

I know it's an aging photographer's linguistic quibble, but the article (and the article about the article) refers to the periscope as a "zoom." Zoom traditionally means a lens of variable focal length - a single, adjustable focal length lens. Today, "optical zoom" in smartphones has come to describe the use of multiple cameras (as each lens has its own image sensor), each with a fixed-focal-length lens. Switching between lenses/cameras is not truly zooming, any more than swapping fixed focal length "prime" lenses on an SLR/DSLR is. Of course, single-syllable "zoom" is easier to say and type than four-syllable "telephoto" or the three-syllable "wide angle."

There's nothing to prevent a periscope lens from being a true, variable focal length zoom. Writers who fail to make the distinction between camera-switching and the use of a single, variable focal length lens have failed to adequately describe the rumored camera arrangement.

So Kuo (and MR), will the Apple periscope be a variable focal length lens, or a fixed focal length telephoto?

This is great stuff!!! Cannot wait!!!
Meh ... I think this periscope will just be a waste of time/effort. BUT if it can gives us like 100x optical zoom that is crystal clear, after picture processing or even image spot focus (take picture and focus on any area for a frame) ... then I know some will love that. Me I have no use for it.

So quality and better features not offered elsewhere - then it's worth it.

nobody wants a 100x digital zoom but 10x optical is a BIG difference.
That'd be equivalent to maybe a 250-280mm? Optics would be shyte compared to a 70-200mm f/2.8. I want images to be comparable if I’m using the phone, like they are for ultra wide or 28-50. Anything over that, the optics seem to struggle. But horses for courses. Maybe they'll do so amazing, which is very Apple I guess.

We were saying the same for the 2020 iPhone, and the iPhone before that and look at what was released instead. I don't think there's gonna be any epic iPhones anymore.
iPhones are great every year hence why so many people will always buy them. however the features improvements will always be slowly each year. thats the way it's always been and people accept it as they simply prefer IOS. For most people the phones do what's required and until you have those features thats rumoured you really aren't missing something you don't already have

No, it's not always been this way. People indeed accept it like they accept an annoying new Facebook interface because of habit and lock-in. It's no news there's virtually nothing new about the iPhone since the X, except than singular component upgrades here and there (XS barely being an upgrade on anything at all). The "most people" thinking combined with Cook's greed has guaranteed a slow grind of identical devices, with a feature update here and there aped from Android flagships or past blockbuster designs. It's not that I miss something I didn't have, I miss having something new!

Sorry but it has. Features for most part are always on android devices first.

I suggest those who don't like the delay in getting these features android is the place to go to. Many on here have tried android due to these features being on there first and soon return to the iPhone due to the IOS preference and the ecosystem. sometimes having the features is nice but if you don't enjoy the OS and prefer the iPhone not much you can do.

The fact you have to wait 1-2 years for some features so be it. people will wait and have shown they will do so.

People who are annoyed should go buy another device and get an android phone. plenty of choices out there. I love some of these new android devices but simply prefer IOS and would be a waste of time getting new android phones for the sake of having new features.

Not quite. Up until the iPhone 6 or so, Apple was making strides in physical and UX/UI design, that Galaxies or whatnot copycatted to death. After the 6S things began slowing down (with the laughably "courageous" 7) until reaching the grinding halt we are experiencing today. After every two iterations we'd have a revolutionary cycle, something that stopped happening after the X. That's been 4 years, not 1-2.

It's an arrogant cop-out to tell critical users "go buy something else" just for sharing their experience. If I was a novelty seeker or early adopter I'd go for a foldable. But I'm reasonably content in the iOS/iCloud ecosystem. That being said, there doesn't seem to be a vision or roadmap for future device direction for years now despite all the "pipeline" big talk.

I fail to see how it’s a arrogant cop out. If a user is not happy with the progression of features go buy something else or simply stick with what you have. I really fail to see the issue. If features aren’t Arriving as quickly as the user wants there’s 3 options.

Stick with what you have
Buy an android phone
Or upgrade to what Apple bring out each year

Too often people get too obsessed with what else is out there. Obviously people would want features out as soon as possible but that’s not always how things work. For most people even without these features people will still use their phones the same way.

Most people just want a dependable working phone sometimes for many years to come.

Apple will wait on features because they know they can. I don’t see much point in bashing them every chance you get as quite frankly that’s not really going to make much difference to what they bring out.

I’m sure the foldable will arrive but in a few years. Just like a notch less iPhone likely will arrive by then too. It’s fine stating where Apple need to improve and they do in many areas like any company

That camera is looking bigger all the time. As much as there is still a distance between DSLR's I don't think Apple wants that at all. They want you to use an iphone, cornering the camera market...

Now that is not really sharing the space.

and iPad to iMac...its an all-in-one computer after all. Whats a PC?
Yes, technically they are all computers....some portable, some not. They could be called "Personal Computers" as that is what "PC" originally stood for when IBM released them in the early/mid 1980's as IBM PC, then IBM PC XT. Now needless to say PC just refers to a Windows computer.

However, I would venture to say that most people are not...and don't want to be walking around carrying a DSLR.

The problem is you’re defending them doing it “because they can”. Also, the periscope would be a big deal for some of us—and it won’t be 1-2 years behind—if it really isn’t until 2023 it will be 5+ years behind—the P30 had 5x in 2019—which is just silly they’re so far behind in this area to me. It’s purely a margin issue, not a capability issue.

I love that the Camera is being improved so much. I can’t wait to get my iPhone 13, and honestly if the 14 blows me away I’ll consider that upgrade also.
Some people in earlier posts seemed to think that everyone uses a phone like they do, noting someone said an improved zoom is a waste.. I don’t agree. Having an iPhone 12 Pro has been amazing with my new born baby and toddler. So many memories and beautiful pics not only for us as a family, but to share with all our extended family during this ridiculous COVID pandemic. When we had a brief adventure to the zoo the pro took some beautiful pics of the lions etc.. and at birthdays the night mode stuff is ridiculously fun to use! Can’t wait for the 13 pro.

Come on Apple, just develop a DSLR that runs on iOS already, It's pretty obvious you don't want to build phones anymore.
You mean mirrorless 😃 As much as my new Canon R6 cost I should be able to talk on it.
