But why not try? If China declared war right now on the US, then the only way to win it would be to strike hard and (ahem) "hot", if you know what I mean. And that's because the US does not have the manufacturing base to be able to build replacement planes, tanks, ships, or ordinance. China already has a bigger navy.

The US won WW-II because we had the manufacturing base and know-how to make tanks in a car factory. Or planes in a factory that just weeks before was making sewing machines. And so forth. You can't do that if you don't have factories at all.

This is a terribly high-risk state for our country. Rebuilding our manufacturing base must be done just for security reasons alone (although all the other reasons are good ones too), and it must be done quickly. Whining and complaining about how the president is "going about it" is your right, but it's way off track.

Because I've heard reason after reason, and lie after lie. It's because of fentanyl, it's because of border security, it's because of this or that.

..and in top of whatever the labeled reason are, a lot of what is being tariffed is on things we can't even produce in the US, like coffee and bananas? I will say it again, some things cannot and will never be able to produced in the US. We don't have some natural resources, and we don't have the climate.

I feel like I'm talking a wall. This is more than manufacturing. It's a blanket tariff on everything... what's tariffing bananas go to do?

The best outcome I can see from all this is we simply buy less stuff, in total, from local or foreign sources. We are too consumerism, and should really be buying less of what we want, and more of what we need.

What is happening is that the world will start routing around the US, and we will learn that the world doesn't need the US as much as the president thinks it does.

It's to make America great again, apparently. Just like Great Britain aint that great anymore and won't ever be again.

The US has an immense unsustainable debt and needs to address this. The only way it can is for consumers to buy US made product. Yes a blanket tariff is odd on products you can't even make, but the incentive to make something local is certainly there now. However I imagine even with a 30-40% tariff the products will still be cheaper from Vietnam and China than what the US can produce [and that's if they can produce them at all].

Folks need to understand these are reciprocal tariffs. They're meant to freak the global market out, and countries will lower tariffs on US goods to compensate and get their tariffs lowered by the US. Israel already made theirs 0%. Trump will probably give special deals to Canada and Mexico if/when they do more about border security.
He wants things that simply are not going to happen. Europe will NOT be importing American meats or poultry — simply due to our poor animal husbandry and manufacturing standards (VILE). They don’t want chicken bathed in BLEACH in order to be safely edible. I’m not even sure what is done to most beef Made In America (™)!

Regarding cars - no one has mentioned that US automobiles also have EXTREMELY POOR gas mileage compared to European cars — on the average of 15% poorer mileage for a US vehicle. Oh, and he wants to eliminate the various climate/safety measures in place for US autos, another reason no one in the EU would import an American car — they won’t even be legal on their roads.
Thanks to the national ‘obsession’ with giant autos/trucks/whatevers, gas mileage has on the whole barely increased over the past two decades in US autos. And despite cheaper fuels costs here, American spend much more on fuel than Europeans. But hey, FREEDUMB.

Apple’s biggest problem isn’t tariffs, it’s lack of innovation as evidenced by their lack of growth over the last 3 years. Further, they have no prospects for real growth as they’ve proven to be a laggard in AI and robotics, the most disruptive tech since iPhone. Even with the recent price drop they’re severely overvalued, trading at 30 forward P/E. This is a $120 stock at best IMO.

Tariffs will only serve to expose their weaknesses that much faster and the mgmt team will no longer be able to hide behind the facade of success with stock buybacks.

Apple is a great American company and I wish them success but it’s in serious need of a courageous, visionary leader.

While nothing is certain, if you were on the fence about whether to buy a current Mac or wait until the next one... I don't think the price will be going down in the US next time around.

You would think that would be it but I hate to break it to you that a good chunk of Americans wholeheartedly support what the President is doing, a lot are showing their true colours clapping for all of this. Canada is learning Americans aren't the ally and friend we thought they were.

The orange man might come and go, but most Canadians will never forget this moment in our shared history and I reckon most around the globe won't forget it.

These policies might bring pride and happiness to a portion of Americans domestically, the long term effects on the relationships and partnerships America will need in the future will be forever felt.
Something like 30% of Americans don’t even VOTE. Why? So many possibilities. All disappointing.

The remaining 70% which does vote is then divided between the (generally) greedy, unethical, regressive fringe, and actual ‘traditional’ conservatives who are mostly concerned with money and how to hoard it; and on the opposite side of the spectrum, the possibly civic-minded (or maybe just pragmatic) who understand that in order for a society to continue to function, there are costs which must be paid for necessary work & services, and people must be employed in order to accomplish this, maintain and revitalize infrastructure, preserve the public health, education, and the national trust of the public lands. And to the left of them the other fringe, who seemingly don’t even know what they want.
All of the above is to say that the claim that there’s a ‘mandate’ and a majority agree with these actions is propaganda, and not actually supported by real data. Only by talking muppets (only dumber, uglier, and meaner) on various ‘news’ networks.

I fully understand why Canadians would consider us all likely enemies. The USA has proven we are not a country you can count on for more than 4 years at a time, at best. At worst, we may be invading you or a neighbor in the name of ‘freedom.’

The other truth of the matter is that the USA has never been a ‘friend’ to any other nation unless it was of financial or military benefit to us in real wealth.
All of our government’s relations have always been driven by the greed of the 1% class and their political lackeys. In the past the 1% were only millionaires, and they actually paid taxes(!) at higher rates than everyone else. Now it is the opposite, and they mostly pay NO taxes. While gloating about it.

You can bookmark the post for posterity and we’ll see how right and wrong everyone gets to be as things roll along.

People get things wrong all the time. Remember y2k? You have to watch out for the appeal to authority argument.
There is a big difference between y2k and businesses incurring additional expenses
Not one single economist has come out & said as a consequence of these tariffs then prices wouldn’t go up.

I actually think this tariff issue for Apple could be a problem because not if but when Apple increase prices because of it
So when they raise the price of the iPhone in the USA that will then adjust the price of it everywhere else in the world

Agreed. No way they can expect to pass along a 40% price increase in this market. They’ll eat it this year, play themselves up to be the great savior and hope the 🍊🤡 blinks.
Apple won’t put 40% on the iPhone
What will probably happen is they will increase the price but apply that worldwide so then it doesn’t look as if it’s just Americans paying the higher cost

Other iPhone users around the world will just look elsewhere I imagine or keep what they have, with Trumps Tariffs knocking a huge amount of money off Apple, people will just look and think about their actual needs and buy elsewhere if the iPhone, iPad and Mac prices go up in price to much or as I mentioned just keep what they already have.

With all that’s happened with failed promises this year from Apple about its AI and Siri, and adverts pulled because the tech was not ready, infact it was never even shown to be working! That has meant Apple is already in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons which is not great, while other phones companies are way ahead with AI etc. Apple lost $311 billion in market value yesterday that is a colossal amount for them to deal with and the sources for all the parts has been hit with massive tariffs.

With these new Trump Tariffs now as high or higher than they were in the 1930's great depression maybe some countries will hit back I imagine some may try to cut a deal but prices in America will go up and it would take decades to build infrastructure to manufacture in the USA and the cost may be prohibitive. Economists all over the world called this a bad move and they know more about this subject than anyone on Mac Rumours I imagine, including myself. I'm just echoing what's been said all over the world by people who study the worlds Economy in more detail and with more knowledge than any of us because its thier job.

Apple right now are not in a good place sadly and its a shot in the foot thats caused it. On a final note I hope the Penguins in the Antarctic dont get hit to hard by the 10% Tarriff imposed on them!

Why not?

They don’t have a problem doing it in Brazil or anywhere else (adjusting for local taxes and tariffs, that is).
Well that’s a good question
And i understand your point however
Apple as a company is not going to raise the price of for example of the 17 PM in the USA & not apply that increase across the board because then it won’t be that much of an increase to then combat the additional cost faced in the USA

these tariff increases are a bad idea full stop on multiple different levels
From price increases
To smaller companies that import products that they can’t get in the USA

What will be interesting if Apple increases their prices then i wonder if google & Samsung deliberately don’t raise prices to try & entice more customers as I’m starting to see more high end android devices about compared with before
Or people just hold onto their iPhones longer.

I just think that we all knew these tariffs on china where coming & I believe that is the reason why the iPhone 16E is priced at that so come September the rest can get bumped up in price.

Stop spreading misinformation. There’s no way that can legally happen. You clearly don’t know how it works.
Indeed that's not how it works….at the moment (!). BUT….if he can/is still alive…he definitely will try to do that…3rd term. It just needs a bit more work on changing the system. Also not a very good idea to spread this idea at the moment….time will come though.
Edit:
Original poster clearly knows exactly how it works. Too bad, some people do not see this.

Cruelty is the point.

Trump is doing what all bullies and strongmen do.

And yet the Trumpers bend over backwards trying to make Trump's malevolent ignorance into some sort of secret brilliance.

But one thing is for sure: it will be costlier for the consumers.

For me in the EU it shouldn’t be a problem, I think Apple imports directly from China

Nothing quite like Apple-bashing riding the back of tariff-madness.

Except they are not reciprocal taxes. Take Australian for example. There is a free trade agreement with 0% import taxes, but 10% has been applied in these supposed reciprocal taxes, breaking the legal agreement. Other countries cannot lower import taxes when there are none, or make small changes when they are very low. Instead, expect other countries to raise their import taxes to match the ones applied by USA.

The calculations appear to be based on trade deficits, not the import fees of other countries. Trade deficits are because Americans are buying more goods from other countries than those countries are buying American goods. The prime example is cars. Almost nobody buys American cars because they are too big for the roads in most countries, they are much less efficient, and are seen as much lower quality.

Every smart phone is going up in the US.
Yes they will however Apple will increase the prices worldwide as a consequence

That is why I believe the iPhone 16E has an increased price of 180 on the previous model because it will be easier to bump up the prices

Want to explain that? Tariffs are a tax that Apple will pay to the US government upon import.

Almost off-topic but this makes me think of the fact that maybe we wouldn't be so upset with taxes if they didn't feel like just burning money.

What if that tax money was earmarked directly for investment into US manufacturing infrastructure and training?

What if social security taxes and healthcare taxes actually went into an individual account for that person's healthcare?

Seems like the tax system is the real problem.
