Analyst speculates Apple will change technologies on a specific timeline. Apple doesn't. Oh, it's because something went wrong! Schedule slippage! DISAPPOINTMENT!

Why not express just a grain of skepticism, MacRumors? We like rumors. That doesn't mean they have real value and are equally credible.

I don't like the way that the story has been reported, very much sounding as if it is solid fact.

This isn't a declaration from Apple. It's someone who may / may not have gotten hold of confidential information - maybe there's truth in it, but maybe it's just someone who made a declaration as if it was solid fact, and now they're back tracking.

It should be much more openly reported as a rumour.

With 10.9 Air not getting an OLED display, the Pro lineup should be getting a 11" mini LED. With this there will be differentiation between 10.9 and 11" displays and enough reason for Apple to bring mini LED to 11"

I do not think it is related, as Apple would eventually bring a mini-LED to iPad Pro 11” anyway. For me the display tech is not as important, as long as we get a good quality screen. Unfortunately, Apple seems to have neglected their iPad screen quality lately. A few examples would be light-bleeding on iPad Pro 10.5” and iPad Air 3 10.5” (probably sharing the same panels), light bleeding at the same spot on iPad Air 4 and, most recently, Apple’s “normal” jelly-scroll effect. I know for a fact that my iPad Air 2 had deeper blacks, crispier whites and no light bleed over 5 years, compared to my iPad Air 4, with blacks looking more like very dark greys and whites tinting towards yellow, also sporting a famous light-bleed of a different intensity on the same spot on two different units. Disappointing, considering Air 2 was also less expensive. This is why I was looking forward to Air getting an OLED, but if Apple figures out a better way of making the screen better, hey, I am all in!

So Samsung didn’t allow Apple providing better tech to their customers next year.

This is not written clearly, but given the meticulously chosen timing of each “report” it definitely suggested to the market. Hehehe

Headache is a proof, eyestrain is a proof.
What do you think those studies will do?

They will take average people, divide them in groups and see who is effected and who is not and under what conditions.

if someone gets a headache etc. from the PMW then that person doesn't need a study to know the reality.
Gather enough people and you have data. This is not something that only tiny percentage complain about. Its actually fairly common hence why you see so many threads etc. about it.

But yeah, if you need a study then go ahead. Just would like to point out - in 90s there was a study that fat was bad and sugar is ok. Look how that turned out.
In 60s (or something like that) smoking was recommended by doctors because there were studies that proved benefits of smoking - and look how that turned out.

In the world of bias and selective process its really hard to get true and non biased study which makes it hard to believe anything these days. There will always be 2 sides of each story and each has its own agenda.
History proved that many many many times so studies are only good as long as they are:
A) correct
B) non biased
C) large enough
etc.etc.etc.

Most of them are not so why not trust your own experience etc.? If you have 100 people in a room and 10 will tell you that they suffer from it wouldn't that make it a valid concern?
You make a long drawn out argument to say something, why not also give us a link to a reputable study to really bolster your point?

Your personal experience may be a valid data point, but dont spend four paragraphs saying "I dont need a study". One line with a link to a real study is much more compelling than you droning on and on.

Actually, I'm not missing out. I got the iPad Pro because I prefer mini LED over OLED. Same with TV - really don't want OLED on a TV either. In fact, I feel that you are missing out :)

OLED makes sense for a phone or watch (even though I opted for LCD there too). My only OLED device is actually the watch. Everything else in my home is LCD and I'm very happy about that. Sure, OLED looks great but the disadvantages are not worth the true blacks benefit. LCD all the way
What disadvantages? Burn-in is overblown. It's a non-issue nowadays as long as you don't leave an image frozen on-screen for hours. And what about the disadvantages of LCD? Crap look and the backlighting is prone to overheating and failing after a while. With just about every LCD TV I've had, the backlight has conked out after a few years. No such problem with OLED.

Ok, you make a good point about how people over-dramatize the downsides of oled, but then proceed to way over-dramatize the disadvantages of lcd/led.

Not a good look, lol.

Mentioning my own experience is "over-dramatising"? OK dearie. LOL!

They do this to a certain extent on higher end iPads.

The game Divinity 2 can only be played on iPads with A12X/Z, A14 and M1 to my knowledge. The experience, from what I've heard also varies depending on the device you play it on. On the 4GB RAM iPads it's the least smooth experience. 6GB RAM iPads handle it better, and it's optimized the best for the M1 8/16GB RAM iPads.

Also an app like ProCreate received an update earlier this year that gave it certain advantages on the M1 iPad Pro, like additional layers can be used.

These are 3rd party apps that have realized they don't have to make their app watered down for all supported devices. Some apps choose not to support every device, even when Apple still keeps giving those older devices new updates, like the relatively ancient Mini 4 and Air 2.

The Pro iPhones only really differ usually in terms of camera features. Perhaps they could figure out what feature is most important on the iPad. Obviously they've determined the camera is the selling point on the iPhone. Any suggestions about exclusives for the iPad Pros? I'd be curious.

I know some have suggested a sort of MacOS interface when the iPad is docked on the Magic Keyboard. I wonder if Apple has toyed with these ideas. I'm sure they stay busy with R&D, which is why rumors sometimes are so off base.

Fair points. I think its certainly possible but also know its unlikely that Apple would splinter the iPad OS just for Pro models. I’d just like to completely replace a laptop with an iPad but can’t do that because the OS is still so limited. I also realize that Apple wants me to buy both a Mac and an iPad. Maybe one day…..

This is what I was saying in my post above. I know there is definitely an interest in a version of Final Cut Pro for iPadOS amongst the creator crowd, especially since M1 came to iPad Pro. If Apple develops and launches that product it’s going to run differently from machine to machine as has always been the case in the software/hardware relationship. Of course a 1TB iPad Pro with M1 and 16GB of RAM is going to perform far better than the OG iPad Pro.

Maybe the real reason is because they’re finally realizing that OLED PWM flickering is not good for anyone. We can only hope.
your phone and house lights have been using PWM for years (long before any of your phones had OLED screens.)

consider the idea that you might get a headache from looking at a screen for extremely long periods of time, much like if I were to get a headache from staring at my Hue light (at, say, 20% so I don’t go blind) for just a few minutes. does that parallel make sense?

I do have quite vivid memories of when I was a child and all I had to play video games on (poor me 😔) was a CRT tv/monitor, playing good ol’ N64/Windows 2000 games respectively. sh— got painful after a while!

(don’t ask why my dad had 2000 on our family computer, he was a tech nerd weirdo like that 🤷‍♂️)

What a shame. A cheaper OLED iPad would be the one thing that would push me over the fence on getting a iPad. LCD is just a slow, cheap, ugly and dated technology and the jelly scrolling is just another piece of proof of that.

I'd rather have a ProMotion Display in the iPad Air than an OLED - I know, the name suggests that this is a "Pro" feature only for the iPad Pros, but this feature needs to be mainstreamed into everyday devices.

Wouldn't be a win with OLED either. It would probably come with super low PWM (as OLED iPhones have), the risk of burn-in (an OLED classic), oversaturated colors and cheapest possible panel from Sammy, which will would reintroduce popular Jelly scrolling effect (as it happened with cheap Galaxy Tab S5e AMOLED).
A fine addition to Apple's "normal panel behaviour" collection.
Yes because apple never had any "jelly scroll issues" with their screens they use now in ipads (which shocker, aren't OLED) https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...from-uneven-jelly-scrolling-in-portrait-mode/

I guess you totally missed the point I was trying to make about any studies.

Mini Led should have been The technology of future Apple plans. My iPad Pro 12.9 demonstrates that this is not the case, and everyone is talking about oled on new Apple products. A little bit disappointed. Just a little bit ...

What’s the issue with your miniLED? Halos?
