It’s still IPS LCD cell, only the backlight has changed from edge-lit diffused LED to direct-lit miniLED. VA LCD cell with miniLED is even better than IPS with MiniLED as we have seen in TV’s. Apple should have gone for that instead.
VA LCDs would suck in a tablet. They already kinda suck for TVs because of the crappy viewing angles.

Is there a reason to look at the tablet at any angle other than 90 degrees?
All the time. FaceTime is a prime example. I get up and walk around. I don't just sit staring at the screen and never move. Furthermore, if you have more than one person at one end of a FaceTime call, at least one of you is already off axis. Also, if I'm watching on say a plane or with the thing on my lap, it's not always at a perfect angle. Remember, it's not just about left/right axis, it's also up/down axis. VA is generally just bad.

It's just too much of a compromise. The reason it works in TVs is because generally you sit further back and try not to be too far off axis, and for relatively extended periods. Tablet use is a completely different kettle of fish.

It's no surprise that Apple uses IPS LCDs even in its $299 iPads. Going to a different tech with poorer viewing angles would be a huge step down.

Thank Heavens! I want a really good color accurate iPad for art and don’t want to mess with OLED displays.

Picture quality when using FaceTime and walking around is probably the last thing one cares about.

Maybe the real reason is because they’re finally realizing that OLED PWM flickering is not good for anyone. We can only hope.

Every iPhone from the last 2 generations is OLED. Also, how is it not good for anyone? Only a small number of people have issues with it, which is unfortunate.

How many consumers use tablets for art? 0.0001%?

Much, much, much more than that. Procreate is consistently the top selling payed app year after year, and iPad Pros are immensely popular with artists. Most people at least doodle on theirs.

Basically, what you’re trying to say is that you are not using it for art.

Hard to imagine an i-Pad use case that includes far-off axis viewing.
Imagine harder. And even just mild to moderate off axis viewing on VA panels sucks @zz.

Anyhow, I own a VA TV, an IPS TV, and an OLED TV. The VA is the Sony X900H. It's so bloody frustrating having to sit in the perfect spot just to get a decent picture.

And even then, the black levels just aren't great. They're better than the IPS, but not even in the same league as the OLED. No contest.

What percentage of apps are paid apps? 0.0001%? What's the ratio between procreate usage and game apps/facebook/IG/web browser usage? Obviously, some people use tablets for arts but either there are very few of them or they are very socially shy.

Hahah, nice. I give you a very common example of where off-axis viewing happens, and your response is suddenly that image quality doesn't matter.

I also note you didn't say anything about the plane and lap usage. BTW, our family members will sometimes share a single iPad watching a movie on the plane or train. Again, that means off-axis viewing.

I LUV, LUV, LUV Procreate. I luv it especially with my iPad Pro and the ability to do live face mapping using the 3D infrared camera of my M1 iPad Pro. I can’t do that with a Surface Pro!!! One example.

Getting harder and harder for me to be motivated to upgrade ANYTHING Apple this year.

Would have upgraded one of my iPads to something OLED, now.....meh.

I went into the summer expecting to upgrade my 11PM, Mini 5, and even my AW6. Same for my GF with her XS max and AW3, now......we "might" get the 13PM around the holidays, if at all.

News like this doesn't help to motivate me.

From "I have to have the latest and greatest" to "what I have works so well I'll just.....not" in 2 short years.
I think upgrading an XS Max to 13 PM is a solid upgrade. Sure it's missing that killer app, like touchID or MaskID, but apart from that all reports show that's a pretty impressive piece of kit.

AW3 to the new AW7 is also a very good upgrade I think. It won't have the Blood Oxygen meter which is pity and it will have a similar processor to the six (they will probably tweak it a bit), but otherwise I think it's a really good upgrade. In particular I like the new design and bigger screen. That box design looks nowhere near as good as this sleek new tweak Apple have done.

Just my opinion though.

I think you're right about the inspiration to upgrade. It seems all these techs are maturing and it's getting harder for Apple to inspire us to upgrade as what we have works quite well.

People that are using an iPad for art professionally are most likely using an iPad Pro, not that one would need to, necessarily. There are an abundance of art apps, over many different areas of artistic specialties. The majority of iPad users aren’t necessarily artists of any sort, depending on your definition of art. Even the Facebook and Messages app let anyone be creatively artistic to some pretty interesting effect. Your mileage may vary.

Personally I think the Apple Watch 3 should have been discontinued last year when they introduced the SE. I understand why they sell it, but it's gotten to the point that even just updating the thing can cause major problems. Sure, they should support it for many years, but to sell it as a main offering? Yuck.

In contrast, while the upgrade from the iPhone from the XS Max to the 13 Pro Max can make sense, the XS Max is still a very capable machine. It's got a very peppy A12 SoC, and 4 GB RAM.

In fact, my wife still has the XR. It's got the same A12 and 3 GB RAM and it is still very capable. It doesn't feel slow at all IMO.

Is that why iPhones use OLED screens?
Never said anything about OLED in general. Just refuting your point that Samsung tablets are better for media consumption. The Samsung OLED tablets have cheap coating and bad lamination as you can observe in those images. It would look much better with apples high quality coating.

It never made sense for the Air to get OLED when the 12.9 Pro just got miniLED.
This. People are acting surprised or upset about this news but was this ever actually going to happen? I think the path forward for iPads will be LCD in non-Pro models, both Pros will get miniLED. Whenever OLED or microLED becomes possible on the Pros, I can see non-Pro models getting miniLED.

Pro motion will remain as a Pro feature, as the name itself indicates. It’s one more reason to entice customers to get a Pro instead of an Air

Honestly though this is the type of thing that gets tiring sometimes from Apple. Instead of actually giving the Pro iPad actual Pro advantages in software it gets a better screen which somehow makes it Pro. Shouldn’t they all just have great screens and be differentiated with software that makes one iPad a “Pro” over another?

No.

Do pro “computers” just have different software than consumer computers? Nope. They have things like pro processors, ecc ram, etc. And what software are you referring to? You expect pro ipads to run a different operating system than the air and regular ipads? Like Microsoft with “windows home”? That’s just silly.

Where’s even one peer-reviewed clinical study published in a reputable medical journal that says that?
This is a pretty ignorant comment in the sense that, PWM flicker you would argue in that it's actually good for you? Who the heck actually wants their display to flicker constantly which only leads to eye fatigue. Sure some people don't sense it, but in the end, it's no surprise why IPS displays promote so much "anti-flicker" technology in the advertisements. Objectively, no one wants it. And less on an iPad where it's use has a lot of more static images than on phones which have mora casual use.

If you DO want actual scientific articles, I'm pretty sure you can find that the flickering lights energy saving LEDs use cause headaches somewhere, so have fun googling that for a while if you want.
