Kuo: Apple Cancels Plans to Release iPad Air With OLED Display in 2022, Plans to Stick With LCD Technology

This is a pretty ignorant comment in the sense that, PWM flicker you would argue in that it's actually good for you? Who the heck actually wants their display to flicker constantly which only leads to eye fatigue. Sure some people don't sense it, but in the end, it's no surprise why IPS displays promote so much "anti-flicker" technology in the advertisements. Objectively, no one wants it. And less on an iPad where it's use has a lot of more static images than on phones which have mora casual use.

If you DO want actual scientific articles, I'm pretty sure you can find that the flickering lights energy saving LEDs use cause headaches somewhere, so have fun googling that for a while if you want.

So now it’s “ignorant” to ask for proof - any scientific proof at all - to support a statement? You just make statements that “no one wants it” and claim it’s objective, but, once again, where’s the proof? That’s what objective means, after all. Instead what we have is a subjective claim - your mere opinion that somehow flickering that you cannot see leads to eye fatigue.

People have been watching moves at 24 fps for many decades - where is all the eye strain? But somehow flickering at a much higher frequency than that causes medical problems, right? But any time anyone asks for proof, all you come up with “no, you prove it?”

Like I said - one peer reviewed paper from a bona fide medical journal - where is it? Not some weirdo self-published study in a journal that’s dedicated to why gluten and blue light are killers. Actual scientists.

No.

Do pro “computers” just have different software than consumer computers? Nope. They have things like pro processors, ecc ram, etc. And what software are you referring to? You expect pro ipads to run a different operating system than the air and regular ipads? Like Microsoft with “windows home”? That’s just silly.

That makes little sense. Apple does this all the time. They put specific features on the Pro model of phones and leave them out of the other phones. Apple could also allow Pro Apps to run on the Pro devices. Final Cut, Logic Pro, are a couple that come to mind.

I just think its silly to call an iPad “Pro” when it literally can’t do anything more than a base level iPad can do. So a mini LED screen is what makes an iPad Pro? Not really. Its nice and I love my iPad Pro but it doesn’t do anything more than a base level iPad can do. The software hinders the iPad and always has. That and Apple’s insistence that all iPads be able to do the exact same things really holds them back.

Its different with the phones as Apple puts certain features on the Pro devices but they don’t with the iPad.

Personally I think the Apple Watch 3 should have been discontinued last year when they introduced the SE.

In contrast, while the upgrade from the iPhone from the XS Max to the 13 Pro Max can make sense, the XS Max is still a very capable machine. It's got a very peppy A12 SoC, and 4 GB RAM.

In fact, my wife still has the XR. It's got the same A12 and 3 GB RAM and it is still very capable. It doesn't feel slow at all IMO.
Totally agree. It's crazy they are still selling it. Maybe they price it low to get people into the eco system. It's like advertising durries to kids with Joe Camel back in the day!

Agree. XS Max is still a very good piece of kit. Apart from its low light photographic ability is been quite solid for me for the past 3 years. I'm passing it down to the wife who is looking forward to getting her hands on it over her ancient 6S+!

But I do think the upgrade from the XS Max to the 13 Pro Max is a quality improvement in just about every single aspect of the phone. Not least being the bigger screen real estate and the significantly increased battery. I just wish it had TouchID and a smaller notch... Possibly next year or 2023.

So now you’re proposing that apple have add-on apps that only run on “pro devices?” Do 3rd party developers get that privilege too? So if you buy an iPad Air you can’t run final cut but an iPad Pro can? Is there a new pro App Store? How do you avoid confusing ordinary consumers, given that right now apps can run on any device that runs the right operating system.

Seems like a godawful idea.

LOL.

If the data disagrees with you, then it "proves nothing."

The DSCC analyst team includes people who have served as VP at Samsung, Director at Viewsonic, and OLED engineers from TCL and LG.Philips.

They know far more than you do.

Lol. Did you even read it?

DSCC also details the costs of production in the next 5 years for LG's 65-inch WOLED TVs panels (see above) and 42-inch panels. Interestingly, according to DSCC's report, the cost of producing a QD mini-LED panel is actually more expensive that the costs of producing a similar WOLED TV panel.

QD mini-Led is vastly different than mini-Led. QD costs way more. Like I said earlier you proved nothing.

Here is better article. I guess you will actually read this time. The same source you said were more credible now flip flopping.

This manufacturing cost imbalance is set to change though. DSCC's report predicts that OLED and Mini LED's positions will soon reverse, with the latter tech decreasing in price significantly faster than OLED.

In what way? Not in screens vs miniLED. Absolutely NOT in performance, RAM, GPU, Storage options, and absolutely not in apps.
We are talking media consumption. Galaxy Tab S 7+ has 8GB RAM, 512GB storage (plus 1TB with memory card). That's more than in similarly priced iPads and more than enough for media consumption. CPU and GPU performance are irrelevant for this use case (as long as it is adequate). The most importand factors are:
* weight
* thickness
* screen ratio
* display quality
Samsung S series tablets win in all these categories. In fact, iPad Pro 12.9 is so heavy, it hardly qualifies for a handheld device (and if the tablet is not used handeld, then it's not really a tablet and 85" TV is a way more preferable device for media consumption in this case)

Lol ok man. I’m not here to argue with you. I think it could easily be done. They put specific features on the Pro iPhones all the time. But you do you and keep that aggression going!!!

No, but it effects enough people that it harms their bottom line. And that is something that Apple will notice.

I get migraines with OLED (hence using the iPhone SE 2020) but I doubt the problem is that widespread. Apple's still selling 200+ million iPhones year after year.

That's totally fine with me as the iPad Air series has never been a thing to me, I'm all either entry level iPad, or compact iPad mini, or hey why not get the iPad Pro and that's it.

Getting harder and harder for me to be motivated to upgrade ANYTHING Apple this year.

Would have upgraded one of my iPads to something OLED, now.....meh.

I went into the summer expecting to upgrade my 11PM, Mini 5, and even my AW6. Same for my GF with her XS max and AW3, now......we "might" get the 13PM around the holidays, if at all.

News like this doesn't help to motivate me.

From "I have to have the latest and greatest" to "what I have works so well I'll just.....not" in 2 short years.

We don't buy new cars every year either - These products - laptop, tv, smartphone - are approaching maturity. I'm simply grateful that we can enjoy these high quality products today. I have also started using 5G this year and it's awesome loading things instantly even at peak hours.

That could be considered a good thing as well though. For example, the urge to upgrade my iPhone this year was tempered enough that it is the first time I haven’t. Kinda feeling good about that, but I get what you’re saying.

Then on the Mac side, I’m looking forward to seeing what M1X silicon brings to the table and the new hardware, but at the same time I’m starting to get used to using an iPad in my workflow so I’m wandering if I’ll even need a Mac. The portability and always on connectivity on iPad Pro is a killer feature. It’s good to have options for products that last.

I see your point here. At the same time it’s not hard to imagine the manifestation of pro level applications that would run wonderfully on iPad Pro with M1 silicon, only to dog out on lesser hardware. It’s a problem that has pushed computing forward for ages now.

However, I don’t think it’s an accident that when Apple updates its “base” or “entry level” iPads that it often, if not always, upgrades the chip to something modern as well. The way Apple is building off of the ARM platform makes me think that moving forward as long as you have a “newish” device, it will just run the software you want to run on it. Pro hardware will have more bells and whistles and will be able to complete tasks faster, but entry level products will be very capable as well.

They do this to a certain extent on higher end iPads.

The game Divinity 2 can only be played on iPads with A12X/Z, A14 and M1 to my knowledge. The experience, from what I've heard also varies depending on the device you play it on. On the 4GB RAM iPads it's the least smooth experience. 6GB RAM iPads handle it better, and it's optimized the best for the M1 8/16GB RAM iPads.

Also an app like ProCreate received an update earlier this year that gave it certain advantages on the M1 iPad Pro, like additional layers can be used.

These are 3rd party apps that have realized they don't have to make their app watered down for all supported devices. Some apps choose not to support every device, even when Apple still keeps giving those older devices new updates, like the relatively ancient Mini 4 and Air 2.

The Pro iPhones only really differ usually in terms of camera features. Perhaps they could figure out what feature is most important on the iPad. Obviously they've determined the camera is the selling point on the iPhone. Any suggestions about exclusives for the iPad Pros? I'd be curious.

I know some have suggested a sort of MacOS interface when the iPad is docked on the Magic Keyboard. I wonder if Apple has toyed with these ideas. I'm sure they stay busy with R&D, which is why rumors sometimes are so off base.

OLED should be standard in todays time and age. 👎🏻
Generation 1 mini-led already goes ahead over oled that has been here for a decade
So no, no oled for bigger displays like monitors, even tablets
Oled is good for little displays like smartphone or smartwatch that they are used for less periods of time

With 10.9 Air not getting an OLED display, the Pro lineup should be getting a 11" mini LED. With this there will be differentiation between 10.9 and 11" displays and enough reason for Apple to bring mini LED to 11"

Really, who cares what Kuo or the other ‘leakers’ say? It is so much hot air until Apple officially announce the products.
