It's one thing to have concepts, ideas, and patents. Every one can come up with them. To actually have the abilities to implement and resolve enough technical issues to make them a reality, like Samsung do, is something to be commended. Now that companies like Samsung have made this tech mature enough, other companies, Apple included, have shown interest. There will always be people who try to advance technologies, and there will always people who only show up to make money on these technologies.
The point is Apple has shown interest in the tech for a while now. Apple worked on the iPad for 10 years before they released it. With the amount of phones Apple sells they need to consider the amount of foldable displays that can be manufactured in high enough yields to meet Apple’s needs. Could be that the yields are not high enough yet to make the product viable right now. And if Apple does make a foldable device it will sell in volumes higher then any other phone manufacture.

1:√2 I doubt they will ever get it to their standards, it’ll never be released. Unless they do something like Microsoft but where the two screens are so close together when it’s opened that it looks like one screen.

Also folding phones can only change the ratio from wide screen to more squarish, or vise versa. Neither is very useful.
Depends on the screen dimensions. If they employed the same system as the ISO paper system, being 1:√2 (approx 1:1.4), then the ratio would stay the same when doubled. Albeit it'd be a compromise, but it'd prevent a phone having to go from overly wide to overly square.

I think those foldable models are so easy to break and damage that they can be designed only to show what the company is capable of.

Who copied the FlexiPai phone?
Samsung had been working on foldable phones for years. They did not copy that flexpai royale thing.

Anyway glad to hear Apple are working on a foldable phone. I will get the first generation.

It's still very much a solution looking for a problem, but I feel it'll be one of those techs that comes back around in a few years once someone's come up with an actually good use for it. For now... meh

I use my phone one-handed most of the time. If the folded, one-handed experience with these foldable models is limited in any way, it’ll be very disappointing. Sure it would be nice to have a bigger screen at some times, but not at the expense of a quality one-handed experience.
The same is true for the 12 Pro Max. Obviously you dont buy a big phone if one-handed use is your main priority.

Will be interesting to see how they solve the bending of the surface to avoid breaks, creases and other blemishes.
If they can design an intelligent and fast mechanism to fold and unfold, this could be a great device.

A foldable phone is a stupid idea. It will sell as many as an iPhone mini, about 17.
The 12 Mini probably sold around 4.8M (6% of 81M). People thought the iPad was not going to sell well either when it was first released. A foldable phone/tablet will sell well for Apple.

It's so 2019...
You forget: All other foldable devices in this world have been economical desasters!
A lot is not enough...
If any company can make a profitable foldable device, that sells well, it’s Apple. Apple did it with iPad, did with the Watch and I bet they will figure how to do it with a foldable. I remember when Apple released its first $1000 phone, the iPhone X. People were saying things like “no one is going to spend $1000 for a phone”. Before Apple released the iPad, the tablet market was not profitable. Look what happened to that market, it exploded after the the release of the iPad.

I am going to make a prediction that the first foldable from Apple will be priced starting at $1499.

I’d still rather a super slim clamshell. Basically a phone that the thickness of an iPhone 12 Pro when folded, but about half as tall, then opens to the size of an iPhone 12 Pro that’s thin. Amazing!
