I agree. I can't figure out for the most part why I would want this. Sure, I could use it with MSFS2020....except it doesn't run on anything Apple.... so I guess not. I'm not going to walk down the street with it. None of the games I play run on Apple products and they've done their best to box out streaming games.

What exactly is the market they expect to sell this to?

I feel there is an obsession from tech companies with VR/AR and its just going to be a failed fad in the consumer space
Time will tell how well Apple does in this space, but VR/AR is no passing fad. It’s a rapidly growing industry, and millions of people are getting into it. For example just recently, the Oculus app was the number one downloaded IOS app, which tells you something about how many people were getting into VR over the holidays.

You will not like to use virtual desktops. I tried them in Oculus and they are annoying.

I also used a 49 inch screen for a year and my neck and shoulders were ****ed from all the head movement. I'm still recovering and need Codeine every morning. Was one of the worst decisions.

Just use a regular size monitor (27-32) and stop letting science fiction and gaming incels dictate our views of the future. They are very rowdy online and often they are troll farms paid to push products, services and visions for companies.
Disagree, I love working with virtual desktops. It’s not ideal with the Oculus because the resolution is not quite high enough and the headset gets too heavy for long periods of use. But it’s still pretty amazing. If Apple comes out with a device that improves in both of those areas, a lot of people are going to find working with virtual desktops to be an amazing experience.

Absolutely. It reads like the most vocal detractors who are posting here are completely unaware of what is already available and is already being used everyday. It is amazing now, and Apple will no doubt improve upon it.

Current Fresnel lenses are the worst element of current consumer grade headsets. Meta is replacing those with pancake optics with their already announced Cambria headset. Apple is rumored to be doing similar, and with their attention to visual clarity on all other devices I am sure they will do some magic here. Only with this change can higher resolution really be of full value. That is clearly coming as well.

We are in for an exciting period.

Lol at this claim chowder. Clearly one hasn’t held their hand next to the the fan on a 35w laptop at full blast. This is honestly nonsense.

Apple's rumored AR/VR headset will use the same 96W USB-C power adapter included with the higher-end 14-inch MacBook Pro, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple Headset render by Ian Zelbo

In a research note today with TF International Securities, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said that Apple's headset using a 96W power adapter proves that it will have Mac-level computing power, as he has predicted previously.

Kuo also reiterated that Apple's headset will be equipped with two processors, including one 5nm chip and one 4nm chip, each manufactured by TSMC. In November, Kuo said the higher-end processor would have similar computing power as the M1 chip for the Mac, whereas the lower-end processor would manage sensor-related aspects of the headset.

Apple's headset will offer an innovative experience with seamless switching between AR and VR modes, according to Kuo, who added that Apple's headset will be two to three years ahead of competing products in terms of computing power.

Kuo has previously claimed that Apple's headset will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2022, with shipments ramping up in the first quarter of 2023.

That looks extremely uncomfortable and hot. I really can't understand why anyone would want one, even though I'm sure a lot do.

Sure, it has the 96WUSB brick on the end…
But the actual headset will charge via lightning.
I’m 90% sure of that, would love to be proven wrong though
Almost certainly not Lightning. The Lightning standard is 12W and doesn't support PD. There would be no reason to put a 96W brick to charge 12W. More likely USB-C which supports 100W.

Um, so that's a render based on made up information. It's not an actual headset. Maybe wait until the product is actually announced before you decide it's uncomfortable and hot?

But FWIW, I've been using a Quest since launch, and they're fine. I do "fitness" apps in it all the time with no problem. And this is certainly going to be a better form factor than that.

The great thing about it being USB-C is you can just strap a bigger battery to yourself and keep going.

I can think of a ton of industrial uses cases. For individuals, it's tough. I mean, you could overlay a desktop across your field of vision? That could work surprisingly well; there are really old VR desktop demos that show how that'd work.

For me, I can't use it because I'm subject to extreme vertigo when in a first-person virtual environment. Oh well.

Of course, but we do know a few things about the form factor -- it will be bigger than a pair of glasses just because it needs a battery and cpu, so it will be heavier and if you want to block ambient light, like other similar products, it'll be hot.

As for making a decision, this is a no buy for me, at least with the current state of the art and I really don't see that changing in my lifetime. What i'd want is Star trek Holodeck type stuff, or better yet, direct input into my brain. :)

Apple failed to sell a $400 speaker even though it was high quality and worth the pricetag.

I just fail to see how they will convince the mass market to buy a $1-$2K device with niche use cases. I’m so curious to see what are the killer apps they will bring to drive mass adoption (probably fitness if I had to guess).

That's right, and it was discontinued as a result. Having a few million Apple loyalists who buy everything be the ones to buy it is not considered a success at Apple. They don't even consider that to be a market.

This by far the most bizarre product choice for Apple in over 20 years. A $400 ill-equipped smart speaker was mundane by comparison. I don't see anything that could drive adoption of this at any price.

One thing is for sure, the AR part better mean it’s portable enough for people to bring it around to wherever they want to. Apple’s forte is and will always be portable devices.

This is not the thing you're going to walk around with. The glasses were supposed to be the product. And who knows where they are right now. This is firmly a VR product which means bumping into walls and furniture like every VR experience.

I still cannot find a consumer use case for this. The Wii, Kinect, Sony PS Move, all failed to do anything in the gaming field. I don't see how Apple would change anything.
On the other extreme, there's Valve Index, Oculus, are extreme niche, and I don't think Apple are interested in such extreme niche market.

In any case, if this were true, it has to be shown in WWDC. You cannot launch something without any dev support. If we don't see anything in WWDC, then it's just a rumor.
If it were some miracle product that removed the need for external Mac displays and allowed me to simply VR my content at extreme sizes/resolutions, it might get my attention.

But it won't be.

Kuo expects Apple to sell:

2023: 3 million units
2024: 8-10 million units
2025: 15-20 million units

The first year is basically around the level of HomePod speaker sales.
3 million means absolutely no sales outside of the Apple loyal. There are around 3 million people who will buy absolutely everything Apple produces regardless of what it is. Apple doesn't even consider this to be a market. They don't make products for this.

The 2024 and 2025 numbers are just idle speculation, if the thing were to revolutionize something, and catch on. It has almost zero potential to do so.

I’m guessing you’re not in the VR scene currently. There are devices out there $3K that sell fine. If they can bring game changing features and power, and open up the system to VR developers, I can see it doing well. Not to mention if the “Metaverse” actually takes off, it’s poised well to be a main player in the market.

For example just recently, the Oculus app was the number one downloaded IOS app, which tells you something about how many people were getting into VR over the holidays.

The Oculus was dirt cheap and heavily promoted everywhere this holiday season. People bought it as a gift item not even knowing what it was. You couldn't walk into a store without tripping over piles of boxes of them. The temporary popularity of $300 Oculus is not an indication of anything, and could be waning already for all you know. You seem to think every sale equates to someone new "getting into VR", and you fail to realize the substantial number of people who pass on it after trying it. It is not for everyone, especially not in the piss poor state/quality that is currently available.

VR is doing well, it’s a rapidly growing industry. It’s happening, whether you like it or not

There is no indication that it is doing well. None. It has no traction outside of gaming, and within gaming, it is a micro percentage. A niche of a niche.

I agree that virtual workstations have potential, but it would require an absolute miracle of quality improvement to make it a real thing as opposed to a gimmick that people talk about.

The longer and more regularly people wear that device the more disfigurement will occur to their faces.

When I used the Oculus, which was only 350 grams, I had an indentation crease around my eyes after only an hour. No I didn't have it on tight. This is what happens.

If people think they can live and work in these, like some nutters are trying to say, over time they will be permanently disfigured. That's just what happens to the body - it adjusts to whatever we do to it, especially in a growing child.

Even eyeglasses leave permanent dent on the sides of the nose after years of use. VR is going to leave horrific marks on people who use it excessively.
Get a better headstrap. The BoboVR one on Amazon is like $35 and very comfortable.

The current VR tech is impressive but limited by a mostly low resolution blocky experience with cartoonish graphics from 1990. If Apple could drastically improve the resolution and graphics quality and release some really great games at the same time they may have a hit. Of course, I'm also interested to see what the new Sony VR2 brings. Clearly, Sony has an advantage over Apple in terms of bringing compelling games to their platform. I realize VR is also about experiences and environments but I'm not gonna buy another expensive headset to wander around a cheesy virtual space with pixelated BS "land" for sale.

Oh really? How much fitness have you done with 3 lb goggles strapped to your head?

Nope.
None, because the Quest 2 weighs 1 lb. It is an amazing workout experience. Spend a half hour with Leanne in Supernatural and tell me that you have ever had a better workout experience.
