Kuo: Apple No Longer Planning to Launch iPhone SE 4 Next Year

We bought the iPhone SE 2022 last year mainly due to its updated specs and Touch ID (with price as another factor) though we preferred our SE 2016's size. At this point, guess we'll wait and see what Apple does in future.

Price was the factor in your purchase, as it is for every SE buyer. The other things are just what people tell themselves to feel better about it.

Nope. That's not superior to anything. Who wants to bypass the lock screen entirely? Dumb.

The SE model never made much sense to my uneducated view, older models at cheaper prices with only one color/storage option seems like the better idea no?
As someone said above, the two year old iPhone 12 is still $599. The SE is $429. They’d have to sell a four year old phone to hit that price point. SE with A15 and 5G makes MUCH more sense than an Xr.

I think the current SE model will continue to be sold for the time being, but a new base level iPhone will be introduced with FaceID next year that is of similar size to the Mini.

The Mini was probably discontinued to set up this new product for next year. Since they wouldn’t want to sell both, one of them had to go. I think it will have a different name than SE, so that is probably where the confusion is.

I think Apple's challenges with the 5G baseband chip represent the need for a complete rethinking of how electronics are designed. Maybe entirely new materials are needed? Maybe copper and silicon have used up their usefulness?

In all likelihood, Apple simply inherited a bad team from Intel.

Intel basebands are known to have power consumption issues and given those basebands use x86 cores, it's not surprising.

I guess it depends on the SE-buyer. I've met some who didn't care about tech specs and just wanted to be in the iPhone eco-system. They were not happy about the conceved high price of the SE, but didn't waste too much thoughts on it.

And then there's the other group that were not happy that they could only afford (or were given by parents/employers) an iPhone SE, and didn't like that they had to pay so much for old hardware.

Personally, I've yet to meet someone who wouldn't rather take an iPhone mini or regular iphone.

Well, meet my wife then. Turned down an iPhone 14 for an SE.
”It is too big, don’t like faceid, don’t like all screen”.

Anything to reduce the bloat in the iPhone lineup. Just keep an older model in the line at the SE price point.
By their pricing structure if they kept on selling iPhone 11’s right now it’d be listed at $499, so still off the mark of the SE’s current $429 tag.

I think it makes much more sense to have a model that is purposefully aimed at the sub $500 market rather than selling 3+ year old models as “new”.

Tim Cook would be impressed with your dedication to supply chain efficiencies though 😅

These wireless chips are just extremely complicated, and Qualcomm has a LOT of patents. Even Intel said “F that” and stopped their modem development. Will be interesting to see how the Apple designed chips play out. Hopefully it won’t be a total disaster.

I feel like we are in peak iPhone at this point. We'll see with the next few quarters based on iPhone 14. But I am sensing like the next few iPhone revs, there will be a lot fatigue in the market. We might even see Apple actively keep selling older flagship models with a price cut because of lower sales of newer models.

Apple will probably just bump the storage capacity of the SE3 when the 15 is released and call it a day. The whole iPhone line-up would then start from 128GB.

Starting to feel like circa 2016 did with the Mac — no clear direction, odd choices, strange stagnations, and design stumbles — except with the phone.

No new SE means I just use this one longer.
I don’t know what the stumbles are. There’s nothing as problematic as the Magic Keyboard or Touch Bar with the iPhone.

RIP iPhone Mini
RIP iPhone SE

I always thought people loved the iPhone SE models due to the cheaper costs.
People loved the SE until Apple messed it up with too few upgrades and overall too low value/$ with the exact same colors, display, cameras, etc., etc., etc.,.

SE 3 should have been an Xr or an 8 Plus, and they should have put it out in three new colors.

How they thought they could get away with the same iPhone 8 design, nearly identical specs, with the exact same finishes is beyond me.

Like, at least do some superficial, meaningless "upgrades" if you don't want to any meaningful ones.

And now Apple interprets this as iPhone buyers not wanting SEs altogether. Geez! 😩

No, they really shouldn't. Older iPhones have less and less perceived value over time. iPhone SE is a "current" product. It is a mix of older components and brand new components. That makes it a stable product line that can be updated on a schedule.

An iPhone 11 that finally comes down to $429 is a much worse buy than an iPhone SE that gets the latest gen silicon and modems.
The problem is two fold, the SE is cheaper than the 11 despite having more up to date innards - but it looks older, due to the dated iPhone 8 design.

The iPhone 11 is a terrible purchase nowadays, but it looks better than the latest SE.

It's too late now, but obviously they should not have re-used the iPhone 8 design for a third round last year.
