They've already added 5G to the SE and raised the price along with it.

If they've cancelled a 2024 refresh of the SE (which is still pretty far out), I bet this has something to do with the switch to USB-C. Apple is going to introduce the iPhone 15 line with USB-C next year, but they aren't going to run around and redesign all of their old iPhones that they still sell to include USB-C. That also rules out reusing an old product design for an updated SE (which they are so found of doing). By 2024, any SE would have to be an entire new design with USB-C...something Apple has proven unwillingly to do for a low cost iPhone. It may well be that the SE we have today will remain until a USB-C iPhone trickles down to the SE.
Seems logical. I like it.

My wife and I moved from an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 7 to 2nd gen SE's in 2020. They've been great phones for us and are still working well. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the phone can run the current version of iOS and the battery life isn't suffering too much it's a keeper. For me the user experience on a 14 vs. my 2nd gen SE would be nearly identical because they are both running the same iOS. Sure mine doesn't have face ID, but that's not a big deal to me. Why did we buy SE's instead of whatever model was the newest in 2020? Cost! We pay cash for our phones and we were buying 2 at the same time. The SE was a great deal and it hasn't let us down. I'll be sad to see it disappear from the lineup.

Finally someone from the real world joined this forum. Welcome.

The mini did just as poorly. For the exact same reason that the plus is doing poorly. Both were overpriced for what they offered. The plus is way too expensive for a non-Pro phone, and the mini was way too expensive for something that small.

Despite what people claim on the internet, no one anywhere is prioritizing size OVER price. They may have a size preference, but they aren't going to ignore the price or the value of the purchase. Both Min and Plus lack in value severely.
This how I feel about MacBooks. Why do they have to lock the biggest screen behind specs I will never come close to needing with insane pricing. The new Air might be ok but it's still only 15.5 and will probably be in that same price range @ $1550

nobody wants tiny phones anymore and people are willing to buy Pro/Max (soon to be Ultra) models. makes sense for them to cut the bloated devices nobody wants and focus on just the 15, 15 Pro, 15 Ultra.

i wish Apple would make the Ultra models a bit bigger. 6.7" is nice but wouldn't be mad if they pushed it to 6.9-7.1". i often wish my 12 Pro Max was bigger. anyway i'll be going with the 15 Ultra this year even if it's still only 6.7"
why not just carry around an iPad mini 6?

I'm shocked honestly to learn of this.

However perhaps my theory that Apple will position the iPhone Mini as the new 'cheap' iPhone is going to become reality. I believe the Mini will sell well at a reduced price point. Position that as both the compact and cheapest iPhone and you just spec update it every 3 years.

I’ve just sold my iPhone 12 Pro Max and just gone back to my old SE from 2020 that I had as a spare and I love it! Felt small at first but after a day you get use to it and the best bit of all is the Touch ID! It’s so much better than Face ID.. shame they’ve cancelled a new model as it’s fantastic

Touch ID for Apple Pay is incredibly natural. Just rest your finger and let the machine trigger Apple Pay for verification automatically.

Those are just practical realities. I don't understand why anyone doesn't get this. Bigger = more expensive. Bigger = more room for performance and components and hardware features. So naturally the larger products are more expensive and carry more features.

The reason there isn't a 15.5" MacBook Air YET is because Apple doesn't think anyone would pay for it at $1549 - $1599. And they're probably right. If they haven't changed their minds about it yet, the iPhone Plus might make them.

Just because the SE is being discontinued does not mean Apple is not planning on something to address that market segment. My guess is that we will see a reduction in price of the 6.1 inch iPhone 15 to $699 and the iPhone to $599. The iPhone 13 will be $499 and the mini $399 or $449. There will be no need for an SE.

The three things I like Touch better for is unlocking while taking it out of your pocket, APay and getting new apps.
The first one is just nonsensical...with Face ID the thing just unlocks by itself when you look at, which is when you need it unlocked.

The other 2 only bother you because double clicking the side button is obnoxious, and an artificial obstacle that isn't necessary. That doesn't make Touch ID better.

No. No one is going to buy those phones when they are that old, at those prices. When you buy an SE, you're getting the latest or close to latest processor available, which means the best performance and most longevity. When you buy an old phone, you get an old phone. The perceived value of that is terrible and only decreases over time.
