Apple will cancel or postpone mass production for the planned 2024 iPhone SE 4, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a series of tweets. Kuo said that he believes Apple will delay or scrap the device due to consistent lower than expected shipments of middle tier and lower-end smartphones like the iPhone SE 3, the iPhone 13 mini, and the iPhone 14 Plus.

Apple seems to be missing the forest for the tree here. The SE3 , mini's, and Plus are priced wrong . That is major contributing factor to why they don't sell well. Two things tend to happen.

First, the nominal iPhone and/or iPhone Pro get a higher percentage of spiffs thrown at them by third party sellers. How much that is Apple not funding the spiff or retailers picking their own skew probably varies , but fundamentally wrong not to factor that in.

Second, the 13 mini and 14 Plus falling into the same boat is quite demonstrative that the spin that "nobody wants smaller SE , mini sized phones" has major holes in it. Here is a bigger screen model that isn't selling either. So maybe , just maybe, it isn't the screen size that is the major impediment here. Apple has a value proposition perception problem with end users.

One rumor had the SE 4 as being a 'warmed over' XR. Apple is largely picking because it is mostly 'old and paid for' components more so than a purposefully designed affordable phone. The mini was a new design but tried to pack as much power as nominal phone into an enclosure with a smaller battery. Shocker ... folks don't want a phone with shorter battery life. iPhone 13 mini $599 ... iPhone 12 $599. Shocker... some folks get confused or distracted.

I say use the 13 mini form factor. Put on a cheaper display. Only have 1 camera on the back and sell it for $300. Use a great form factor, good battery life, with an affordable price and capture that market. Me - 12 mini, wife 13 mini, daughter 13 mini, mom 13 mini. We were creative with gift cards and promos to drop the price. We all love them and all upgraded from original SE's. I'd upgrade more frequently if what I describe were the new SE.

Suggest that they use iPhone 8 Plus as the starting point for SE4.
So instead of a smallish phone a massive one? :/

I really hope that eventually, if they move away from the current chassis, that the SE inherits the mini form factor if they arent going to make another mini, those of us who prefer small phones are losing options

Ideally I think Apple should just continue iterating on the existing iPhone SE with Touch ID. It's an excellent low end phone popular with less "technical" people. Keep improving the guts; keep the form factor and display the same.
My brother ended up getting the iPhone SE 3 I bought for my Mom but she had passed before she got the device for her birthday. He is quite happy with it coming from an iPhone 7. Apple is making a mistake here because they need to have an affordable device thats competitive and also a gateway to their various services. Make it, but just keep production low.

Maybe the reason iPhone SE 3 shipments have been lower than expected is because prospective SE buyers want an iPhone that's

(1) lower priced (relative to the flagship iPhones)
(2) has a decent sized screen that's large enough but not too large
(3) small enough to easily fit pants pockets without half of it sticking out and maybe even allow 1-handed operation

This makes the iPhone 12 mini / iPhone 13 mini the best candidate to take the next iPhone SE spot.

Does Apple have the courage to do it though?
iphone 5 was the best size ever. I miss it.

There isn’t much margin on these lower end devices. Let Android manufacturers have that market while staying focused on the higher premium $1000+ devices. Apple customers have shown they will pay for the higher end devices so catering to the entry level doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Failure for these models isn’t that hard to explain. The SE 3 features an ancient design in tech terms that goes back to the iPhone 6. The 13 mini has a small screen. The 14 plus is not a cheap device but features the same SoC as an iPhone 13.

People want cheap big iPhones. An SE in XR form factor would do great given it has an SE price.

And not just prefer but actually need a smaller phone. Many people can't do the finger gymnastics required to use the "medium" and "just call it a tablet, it's a tablet" sized phones not to mention having a pocket big enough to carry it.

When a phone is big enough to require two hands I may as well use my iPad instead.

A family member just upgraded from the SE2 to the 14. Her reasoning: The SE was too small.
It's too small for me too. It's OK as backup to still do the Apple stuff, but would never use it as a Primary. I wouldn't mind Mini size or maybe even still SE Chassis but with full screen and touch on power. But I don't think the latter would help since it would be no wider

This is the saddest piece of news in while, like Apple trying to get rid of some users.

They should just recycle the 8 and 8 plus as SE and SE plus refreshing every 2 to 3 years without trying to get fancy. Even keep the colors the same as the 8 and 8 plus. Current SE design with black front on white phone is ugly.

But there is no way Apple will listen to me. Which means that no matter how much I hate it, my next phone will be an Android, if Apple discontinues selling the current SE.

I remember buying at least 5 of the original iPhone SE’s. They were $99. I also paid $99 for the iPhone SE2.

Would never pay more than $300 for an SE. They’ve pushed it too far, too close to flagships. Of course it isn’t going to sell for those prices. And the mini was a non-starter from the get go because of the name itself. No one buys anything titled “mini” which implies that a bigger and or better version exists. The pricing of the mini was also unintelligent, $100 less than flagship? Really? No brainer.
Mac Mini and iPad mini would beg to differ

Even Tim Cook admits that not all customers want to pay $1000+ for phone. The $500-900 is super important.

Just relabel any retired mainline phone as the next SE. Like the 13 Mini. No need for fancy investments. Just keep the price low. It feels like the iPhone is on the way up to be made more costly maybe this is why in-house competitors are not welcome anymore? Apple needs some affordable offer for younger people otherwise it will be the parent's phone only.
