Anyone looking to buy one should definitely consider the options that enable upgrading AFTER one year to an iPhone 13, which will probably be a far more optimized 5G implementation !

The iPhone 12 will most likely get the Qualcomm x60 5G chipset, which is already 3rd gen 5G. So quite mature by now. The question will be whether some phones will be limited to sub-6 5G bands but not have mmWave, but then mmWave will not be useful to a lot of people anyway.

Like the iPhone XR vs. iPhone XS?

This 10.8” model is definitely the low-cost iPad. There is more than just screen size. The Air will still have advantages like a laminated P3 display, more base storage, and a much better front camera.

I suspect we’ll see the iPad air disappear with this wave of potentially bezel-less and hopefully Face ID enabled designs.

Hopefully. iPad and iPad Air need to have themselves an intimate conversation with a knife and a locked room. Whichever is still alive in the morning wins.

Although, I don’t get the idea of an 8.5” iPad mini tho. Seems weird. Granted, sans bezels would help make it happen, but still... weird.

Can they get rid of the top and bottom bezels and the Touch ID/home button now across the board? Can they all be uniform and have the same design as the larger, more expensive iPads?

If not, when do you think, if ever, Apple will make these changes?

Please I hope they never get rid of an air model with the button. It’s so much quicker/easier than swiping imho. Just like nothing beats a round volume knob in a car, not a touch screen, not buttons, not a rocker button.

Said well here:

Make it an iPad mini pro with the new design and screen and it will actually sell again.
nobody wants a 5 year old design with new internals.
still rocking my mini 2. Would buy a mini pro with new form factor and same overall size in a heartbeat.

Would you still buy a mini pro if it was twice the price of a standard mini? As that's the price increment of the full size pro over the entry level one.

As if the iPad line up isn’t already a mess. Add two different pencils and 🤯

not even Apple Genius has a clue. The other day I went to the Apple Store, asking for a case for my iPad Pro and they would have sold me the wrong case if I hadn’t done my own research beforehand.

Genius:
this is an iPad or the iPad Air?

Me:
„no this is an iPad Pro but it’s the 10.5 iPad Pro. No not that iPad Pro. The iPad Pro That uses the same case as the iPad Air 3 but not the iPad one. It has the same size as the iPad Air but it is an iPad Pro“

Genius: ??? Are you sure? The package for this case says iPad Air 3

I’m still surprised by the recent x60 rumor based off timelines. Samples only started going out a few months ago and we know that one of the main reasons Apple settled with Qualcomm was that Intel couldn’t get samples ready by summer of LAST year. Apple would probably be the only client getting 5nm from TSMC this year with A14 chip and x60.
They’ve either achieved some marvel in engineering plus signed an exclusive 2020 deal, or we won’t be seeing the x60 in an iPhone until 2021 models.

Yea. As a former employee, even I’m
Totally confused by the Apple iPad lineup. It truly only makes sense from the point of view of moving older components to lower price points over time, but not from a consumer point of view. Helping a friend decide which iPad to get last week was not an easy task.

Can someone make a list of all iPad sizes ever launched?
In order from smallest to largest:

7.9" (iPad mini, all versions)
9.7" (original iPad, original iPad Pro, Air and Air 2)
10.2" (iPad 7th generation)
10.5" (iPad Pro, 2017 model. iPad Air 2019 model)
11" (iPad Pro, 2018 and 2020 model)
12.9" (iPad Pro, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020 models; screen size has remained consistent, 2018 and 2020 reduced bezel size)

I used to think the 10.8" would be an iPad Air 4, but now I'm thinking it could be an entry level iPad with A12 and 3 GB RAM.

The 10.8" could lose the TouchID button and go with in-screen Touch ID, but keep the same physical size as before, along with compatibility with the same Apple Smart Keyboard as the one for the 10.2" and 10.5" models.

The iPad Air 4 could go to A13 with 4 GB RAM and better screen, in a form factor like the iPad Pro, and would be compatible with the 11" Magic Keyboard.

The only thing that confuses me is the release schedule. I might have guessed the iPad Air 4 might have come out before the iPad 8. So, who knows?

I don't think anything will use A11, but I could be wrong.

All I really care about though is the 11" mini-LED iPad Pro. ;)

If one's intent is to use the iPad as strictly a consumption device, then it makes perfect sense. The mini is portable, & easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for long periods of time. It provides a great lean back against the couch experience. If you're someone that believes in SJ's 2010 vision that he laid out for the iPad, then I would say the iPad mini is the quintessential iPad.

Kuo has already stated before the 10.8” is a low-cost model. Furthermore, guys with a near perfect record like @L0vetodream have stated only the Air will be 11”.
The various rumours mostly state that the iPad Air 4 will go straight into the iPad Pro 2018 11” chassis, most likely with A14 chip but with various features downgraded like promotion moved and reduction from 4 to 2 speakers. This is exactly what happened with the iPad Air 3 going into the old iPad Pro 10.5 chassis. This new 10.8 model is likely to be the new entry level iPad.

So the thinking is that the "iPad Air 4" and the 2021 iPad Pro 11 will be identical in terms of chassis dimensions, but differentiated in terms of specs (A14 vs. A14X, 1 or 2 cameras vs. 3, LED vs. MiniLED, Pencil 1 vs. Pencil 2 support)?

And all of them in 4:3 aspect ratio, except for the 11" which is 199:139.

Im still hoping they come out with the mini led 12.9 inch ipad pro this year, but since they already released a "Newer" one in March I doubt it but still hoping

The iPad Air fills the important gap between the $329 iPad and the $799 iPad Pro. And it's a freebie in terms of design and supply chain costs. I don't think Apple is anywhere close to disappearing the iPad Air.

My guess is:
- budget : 10.2 with A12, 32G and 3GB RAM
- air: 10.8 with A14 pro 11-like design, USB C and pencil 2, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, basically almost a pro 11 from 2018 without quad speakers and pro-motion, and slightly smaller screen
- pro: 11/12.9 with A14X, 6 to 8GB RAM and mini-led

People like to dream about the budget ipad replacing the air at 10.8, usb C and so on... not gonna happen...

The iPad Air won't have Face ID but will have the same 11" display (mini LED) as iPad Pro. Instead, it will use cheaper in-display fingerprint biometrics.

Other potential differentiators: 5G vs. 4G, cameras, and RAM.

There's zero chance iPhone 5G will use Qualcomm X60.

Remember back in early 2019 when every analyst said Intel needed to ship 5G modem samples to Apple? Otherwise, it would be too late for iPhone 5G? Apple needs 12-18 months to test a new baseband.
