If memory servers me, in the beginning, AAPL offered two sizes, 9.7" & 7.9", & both with the same 3:4 aspect ratio.
In the beginning, Apple offered only one size.

As if the iPad line up isn’t already a mess. Add two different pencils and 🤯
not even Apple Genius has a clue. The other day I went to the Apple Store, asking for a case for my iPad Pro and they would have sold me the wrong case if I hadn’t done my own research beforehand.
Genius:
this is an iPad or the iPad Air?
Me:
„no this is an iPad Pro but it’s the 10.5 iPad Pro. No not that iPad Pro. The iPad Pro That uses the same case as the iPad Air 3 but not the iPad one. It has the same size as the iPad Air but it is an iPad Pro“
Genius: ??? Are you sure? The package for this case says iPad Air 3
iPad Air was November 1, 2013. Air two was 2014.👍I made this sheet just to keep up with the confusion!

Bring your iPad to the store next time?
The iPad 7 and iPad Air both support only Pencil 1. So how does the iPad Air offer a better Pencil experience. The only thing better about the iPad Air is the SoC (A12 vs A10) and the screen (laminated with True Tone). The iPad Air still offers plenty of advantages including a better Pencil experience, more base storage, and a better front camera. Where the $329 iPad serves as a media consumption device, the iPad Air is better suited for content creation.
Apple can do a few things to maintain value for the iPad Air, such as increasing base storage, updating to A13, or even decreasing price to $449.

Also the Air 3 has a p3 wide colour screen. This may not be a big deal to some, but for me it’s a deal breaker. The rich colours just pop and look stunning. Reading comics for example is an amazing experience. But who knows, maybe Apple will upgrade the screen on the new entry level iPad with the same screen as the Air 3.The laminated display offers a better experience for artwork, particularly if the user is trying to match the Pencil tip to precise elements on the screen. You can find artist reviews of the iPad vs. iPad Air and Pro on YouTube.
However, I think the iPad Air 3 and iPad will both be replaced by this new iPad. We will ultimately have two iPad sizes and two iPad Pro sizes.
Most likely, but then the gen 3 pencil will also be released!
I think if the iPad has the same chip as the iPad Air there will not be enough to differentiate them and everyone will buy the iPad. I know I will. I’ll also buy the iPad Pro of course but for a different purpose.
As far as I can see the main reason for buying an iPad Air over an iPad is the A12. That is what makes the iPad Air currently the best value iPad. Take that reason away and...
I could be wrong, I didn’t expect the iPhone SE2 to have an A13.
Time will tell.
This is exactly me right now. I broke my Mini 5 two days ago (don't get me started...) so I need to get a new tablet. When the rumor was Sept/Oct. I was going to see if I could get away with using my phone a LOT more than I usually do, borrow my wife's iPad, see how I could hack our 10" Fire Tablet to get by for the time being but now that it's next year I think I'm going to either get that base 11" Pro with the education discount and some AirPods or the really cheap iPad and a blue tooth keyboard to hold me over. But I'm also not the type to constantly upgrade so if I buy something now I'll have it until it dies and then there might be a Mini 8 to check out...Drat. I want a mini pro but can't wait till next year as it's used for work. Going with the base 11" Pro instead as the education promo is pretty good.
Worst part is, you know that even you told her exactly what it was and she could have looked at the history to confirm this, she told the other employees in the back, "yea, itsmilo kept insisting it was a Pro, and I was just like ooooooookay pal..."I had it with me. Which is even worse. She took it and was like so how can I help you with this iPad Air? Or is it the iPad?
then i was like no it’s an iPad Pro but not the one that has FaceID.
She was like hmmm ARE YOU SURE?! This seems like an iPad Air
Basically this. Except for the broken mini 5. That part really sucks. This is exactly me right now. I broke my Mini 5 two days ago (don't get me started...) so I need to get a new tablet. Not a chance. They’ll reduce the price of the entry level iPad before that happens. Also the Air 3 has a p3 wide colour screen. This may not be a big deal to some, but for me it’s a deal breaker.
