PLEASE Apple don't make the mini any physically larger than it is today. Hopefully 8.5" is being accomplished by reducing the bezels. Has anyone good with the math calculated if this makes sense with the ipads current aspect ratio? Maybe they are considering a different aspect ratio?
If they do make the mini physically larger then I'm out, the main reason I like my mini is it fits into my back pocket. I'm not a huge fan of iOS on a tablet at all but I suffer through it because it's still the best tablet at that size as there aren't any more Windows tablets that size and Android sucks on a tablet (although I'd consider one if it has Chrome OS).

8.5in is the only realistic screen size without changing the total size of the device, 9in is not possible... Having said that I wouldn't be against a slightly narrower and longer mini in 3:2, but I don't believe Apple will go through the effort of doing that...
So physically a 8.5" screen can fit into the current ipad mini? That's very good news to hear! Although I'd be ok with a narrower mini if that was how it had to be. I'd still prefer the current aspect ratio but if making it narrower means it still fits in my back pocket then I'm in.
Maybe they will match the iPad Pro 11" very slightly taller (in portrait) ratio? I think if they go any larger but stick with a 4:3 display you'll definitely notice the extra width (in portrait) which would probably make it awkward for a lot of people that take it on the go.
8.5in is feasible by making the thicker bezels as thin as the thinner ones and removing touch id, no need for 3:2... Having said that my mini does not fit in any of my pockets by like 1-2 mm, so a 3:2 ratio could make it fit, but I don't believe it's going to happen...
Expanding the screen onto the top and bottom bezel but not changing the side bezels will change the aspect ratio though? Unless you make the screen (and whole device) wider as well, but I think that would detract from the portability, you'd definitely notice extra width here if it's just able to fit into a pocket or bag now.
yes, you are right, and I doubt they will make the thinner bezels much thinner, so yes, I guess it will be 3:2, but the same physical size as now...
It fits right into my back pocket, and I'm talking regular fitting jeans, I'm a 34" waist. Certainly it fills out the entire width of the pocket, but I don't have to squeeze it in or push it in hard at all. I'm certainly not going to sit down on it, but it's really really liberating to be able to put my tablet somewhere and free up my hands when needed.
the only way I can carry it with me is in a belt bag... but at least this also allows me to carry it with its brydge keyboard and have a mini laptop...
Yes exactly as you have stated CWallace is what I believe will happen based on rumours thus far, and how the current Air uses the previous gen iPad Pro chassis.
If the next entry iPad uses the same chassis as iPad 7, but with 10.8” screen and an A12 (or even A11), then it will be a seriously compelling device if it keeps its £350 price point.
Yes it is the iPad Air it was 468 days when it was last updated so it is very old as the 9.7 inch iPad just got updated to bigger size last fall being only 292 days ago.
Most likely what Apple is doing is keeping same form factor for the iPad Air and iPad mini but just getting rid of all those think bezel making the display screen bigger.
Why? Did your friend have a $800 budget but still consider the $300 entry level model? Or were two models too hard to choose between?
It’s really not that hard to choose between 2 or 3 models, but maybe you want Apple to make everyone’s decision for them and only offer one model? No thanks.
PS Moving older components and features down the lineup benefits the lower cost models. If you want to be on the latest tech you’re always going to pay the highest prices.
You not going get any MiniLED for under $800 when it comes out. It will come out in the iPad Pro first than 3 or 4 years make it way to the iPad Air Than the cheap iPad.
You want new tech it going to cost you that the way Apple and Samsung as been with their tech it comes out with their top pro than makes it way down the coming years.
It won’t. That would be a disaster for the vertical markets that use sleds. There is zero reason to move iPad mini to USB-C. The Air won’t have it either.

The iPad Air isn’t updated every year, there’s no reason. It’s on at least a two year update cycle. 468 days isn’t very long at all.

Yeah they basically pick their store staff based on how ‘different’ they look, no what they know.
I just don’t see $320 iPad getting updated again it just got updated from 9.7 inch to bigger screen in the fall it is only 292 days old.And probably will not get updated this year at all.

Just use USB-C to lighting adapter and problem gone.
If you haven’t noticed, the $329 has been updated annually since 2017.
The iPad Air is a supply chain hack. It relies on reusing mature iPad Pro manufacturing.
I can't keep up with them anymore. Jeez just make like 3 sizes of iPad TOTAL already. It should be iPad Pro in small, medium, and large, and "cheap" iPad in medium.
