Kuo: New iPhone SE With 6.1-Inch OLED Display and Apple's 5G Chip Planned

Apple has restarted development of a fourth-generation iPhone SE with a 6.1-inch OLED display and an Apple-designed 5G chip, according to the latest information shared by reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This reversal comes nearly two months after Kuo said Apple had abandoned its plans to release a new iPhone SE in 2024.

In a series of tweets today, Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14, which features a 6.1-inch OLED display with thinner bezels. The current iPhone SE is equipped with a 4.7-inch LCD display with thicker bezels.

The new iPhone SE will be equipped with Apple's custom-designed 5G modem, with connectivity limited to sub-6GHz bands of 5G, the analyst said. The current iPhone SE already supports 5G, but uses Qualcomm's custom Snapdragon X57 chip.

Kuo did not indicate when the new iPhone SE would be released, but it likely won't be available until March 2024 or later based on when previous models of the device launched. The current iPhone SE was released in March 2022, for example, with pricing starting at $429 in the U.S. The device is Apple's last iPhone with a Home button and Touch ID, but Face ID is likely for the new model if it is based on the iPhone 14.

Update: The new iPhone SE's display will be supplied by Chinese manufacturer BOE, according to reputable display industry analyst Ross Young.

Agreed. The SE, by nature has the latest A chip (or will likely have the latest non-Pro A chip), so for Joe average looking for a new phone, they will see the iPhone SE 4 with a 6.1" OLED screen and A16 chip for $400-500 or the iPhone 15 with a 6.1" OLED screen and A16 chip for $850. Wonder which one they will chose?

Alternatively, Apple could seriously bump the price of the SE 4 but it is still likely to take sales away from the 15 series. The only way I can see this happening is if Apple adds some more features to 15 non-pro (e.g. 90 Hz screen, 48 MP camera, better lens etc) but even then, the average person isn't going to care about that - they want the latest phone and given both are the same screen size, same physical size surely they will go with the cheaper option?

I guess it depends what you mean by premium.

To me, premium means iPhone Pro exclusive features.

As an avid SE user, someone who refuses to use OLED and small phone evangelist, this is horrible news. I was really hoping for a Mini with an LCD display, which was always a long shot.

This is an encouraging development in Apple’s modem development program. It makes sense to deploy this first in a lower risk phone like the SE where performance expectations are more manageable.

This design in a current Mini size would be amazing, would be a first day purchase for me. But reality is this won't happen, so I just bought a refurb 12 Mini from the Apple store (just started listing a batch last week) as a backup for my 13 Mini.

I was hoping they would base the SE 4 on the iPhone 13 mini. I know the mini was not a huge seller, but there are people (most of my family) that prefer a smaller phone.

With the current iPhone 14 starting at $829, I really doubt the SE 4 is going to double in price versus old SEs especially if it's going to potentially be available in about a year. That would put it around $800 to $860.

How can the SE continue to have a notch when it never had one to begin with? This would be the first time if it adopts the iPhone 14 body per Kuo

I'd be surprised if Apple uses the 14 chassis for the next SE as it's too current a model based on their history of using much older chassis. My guess is the next SE will be based on the iPhone XR or X chassis. That makes more sense.

Not an SE then is it. An SE should have an LCD screen, now there are no options for that
