How about an IPhone SE plus? The camera humps in the regular IPhones are getting thicker and thicker, but since I really want a 6.7 " phone and don't necessarily need the extensive camera features, I think this would be great. But it seems rather unlikely.

For me, this is not good news if true as the only iPhone SE4 announced. Could this be a "plus" version for that generation? I hope Apple remembers those of us who prefer smaller iPhones and takes into account possible issues with PWM on OLED. I hoped to hear about an iPhone mini sized SE4 as my original iPhone SE's size fit my hands very well.

I think this makes the most sense. Apple have expiremented in display size in their non-pro lines and this size is the one which appeals to the MOST people. Plus and mini haven’t sold in large enough quantities and the SE’s previous update was lacklustre. Feasibly, there’s not much else that can be done with the SE so I think the size boost to the ‘standard’ size will prove popular.

Not an SE then is it. An SE should have an LCD screen, now there are no options for that

Also too big.
I wouldn't mind the size since my SE is too small to use primary. But keep LCD and Touch. If it is just going to be like the newer ones at a price above SE Range, I will just get the newest one if I go back. Put Face and Touch on an iPhone already like Android has had for years.

As a long-time iPhone user (since the 3GS) and an Apple user all around, I feel completely left out by Apple's move to abandon sensible sizes for the iPhone. My hope is that some competitors seize the opportunity and release smartphones that can be comfortably used with one hand.

When the iPhone 13 Mini is no longer a viable alternative, I would jump on those options for sure, and never look back.

I thought they would base it on the XR or 11, but if they move to the pill shape next year it equally makes sense to base it on the 14 (which is really just a 13 which more or less was a 12). It's not unprecedented either, the original SE was a 5S design with updated internals shortly after the 6 was released.

It would probably mean more fundamental changes to the existing iPhone lineup. Apple currently sells two prior generations of iPhones with very little tangible difference between them. Selling an iPhone 13, an iPhone 14 and an SE based on the 14 just makes no sense.

However, Apple could stop selling older models and establish the SE more firmly as the budget line, which cleans up the lineup and provides a very solid entry level offering. It's not the dumbest scenario when you think about it.

I'm surprised that they're deciding to go with the iPhone 14 form factor – I think it either means it will have a similar form factor (i.e., based on the very similar iPhone 12 or 13), or that Apple really overestimated how many non-Pro iPhone 14s they would sell and have a lot of pieces left over.

Also surprised at the OLED choice. I really thought they would go for an SE based on the iPhone XR with upgraded internals, so I can't complain.

Being that this iPhone SE 4 will have Apple’s much anticipated custom silicon modem in it( wouldn’t have to pay qualcomm anything)and be manufactured on the same iPhone 14 design, you would think the parts prices and overall device prices would be low

The rumor of it having a 6.1" OLED screen seems unlikely to me - then it would just end up being an iPhone 15 with (probably) an inferior camera? What else would differentiate them and justify the higher cost of the 15 (as well as the likely continued sales of the 13 & 14 series)?

Exactly this. The iPhone 12 and 13 are also “similar” to the iPhone 14, so Kuo’s claim amounts to “The 6.1 SE will look like every other 6.1 inch OLED iPhone Apple has produced”, which obviously stands to reason if it will indeed switch to OLED.

And if the OLED claim turns out to be incorrect, it will instead look like the XR/11 as had been rumored in the past.

None of this ground breaking revelation.

or that Apple really overestimated how many non-Pro iPhone 14s they would sell and have a lot of pieces left over.

Just-in-time manufacturing sort of rules out this simplistic model of how a corporate entity might create business cases. However, it’s true that being able to use the same tooling and materials across multiple products can be key to cost control.

That is to say, as much as it may sound surprising, it is at least feasible that using more current technology is cheaper than digging up older “cheaper” technology that has long since ended production.

The SE line has never been about size. It has always been about production costs. They won’t do a Mini for that reason alone. Historically the smaller phones have been cheaper to produce, so it was just a coincidence that the SEs were smaller. But now the XR size is hitting that age where the components are getting much cheaper.

I guess it depends what you mean by premium.

To me, premium means iPhone Pro exclusive features.

Premium features eventually trickle down. They started with the Pro, by all accounts will do the base model iPhone next, and then this rumor says notch is coming to the SE which used to be the premium design since the X came out.

Hopefully doesn't go the way of 3D Touch

Kind of already seems that way. They made a mistake trying to make it a premium feature. This is the kind of thing that needs wide access in order to be supported. You'd think they'd have learned that with the Touch Bar.

Unless the price of OLED drops significantly, I Apple still using LCD panel on this SE 4 to keep the prices down overall

I think Apple tests out this in house modem in the 2024 iPhone SE 4 for a year and if all goes well, then it will go in the 2025 iPhone which was the original plan I believe.

How can the SE continue to have a notch when it never had one to begin with? This would be the first time if it adopts the iPhone 14 body per Kuo

"In a series of tweets today, Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14"

I'd be surprised if Apple uses the 14 chassis for the next SE as it's too current a model based on their history of using much older chassis. My guess is the next SE will be based on the iPhone XR or X chassis. That makes more sense.

It should be based on the oldest chassis that they still manufacture, if previous actions are anything to go by. But the thing is, the 11, 12, 13, and 14 are so similar that there isn’t much to choose between them, and they may just choose to bring it all the way up-to-date.

We'll see. I know SE users that don't care for a bigger phone. I'm just sad to see Touch ID go and hope Apple hasn't given up on under the screen bio-metrics.
