How can the SE continue to have a notch when it never had one to begin with? This would be the first time if it adopts the iPhone 14 body per Kuo

"In a series of tweets today, Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14"

I'd be surprised if Apple uses the 14 chassis for the next SE as it's too current a model based on their history of using much older chassis. My guess is the next SE will be based on the iPhone XR or X chassis. That makes more sense.

Let it be a 5.8” X chassis then! ✌️

Make another iPhone Mini please!

Why? The mini failed. It’s funny how people here on MacRumors and other Internet places clamor over the iPhone mini and yet literally nobody bought them. Apple listened to the demands of this small percentage of users and brought out an undersized and still powerful phone and all everyone did was cry about it and find every reason to bash it and encourage prospective buyers to steer clear. They made two generations even though the numbers showed it was to Apple’s detriment.

The market has shown time and time again that most people want bigger phones.

I think that Apple realized with the mini iPhones that it resulted in less sales of more expensive phones. A $400 mini-sized SE would sell through the roof, which is what they don’t want.

They won’t make another mini iPhone until they can figure out how to justify it being priced higher.

What else would differentiate them and justify the higher cost of the 15 (as well as the likely continued sales of the 13 & 14 series)?
The Dynamic Island. The SE could come with the A16 and outspec the iPhone 13/14. The same way the current SE does with the 12 while being on par with the 13 and 14.

Hoping for 5.8". But it's probably cheaper for them to make it 6.1 OLED to have same size as the regular iPhone.
With the most recent rumours it seems slimmer bezels will increase the display sizes from 6.1” > 6.2” and 6.7” > 6.8”. Considering the 6.1” display size and assembly line has been established for sometime it’s probably cost effective.

The SE 4 will probably retain the notch design while the rest moves to Dynamic Island.

I mean, I bought the SE2 because it was small, then the 13 mini, because it was small. In fact, I switched from Android to Apple because they made small phones. My iPhone purchases then led me to purchase an iPad mini and eventually an iPad Air. So in my case, Apple has gained a net customer solely as a result of small phones. That said, in an overall market sense, I know you are correct.

I really don’t know where I go when my 13 mini eventually dies. My requirements are small and decent camera — don’t care about much else. I’ll happily jump to whatever manufacturer will satisfy Those requirements. Maybe it’ll end up being a cheap flip phone lol. If the phobe is so big you can’t put it in a pocket and it has to live in a briefcase, then I might as well just use a tablet + flip phone 🤣

From a business sense, I do feel a 6.1 SE would be a mistake as I’d see major canibalization of the standard iPhone. Lots of folks would be more than happy with an SE but upgrade because they want a bigger screen.

Because some people want a device for mobile use, not a big screen for watching movies on the couch.

literally nobody bought them
You mean "figuratively" -- or... something I guess. I know I bought one, and I've seen others out in the world. So it can't be true that literally nobody bought them, unless I'm living in some alternate dimension.

Anyway, true, it's a niche market, but if they're going to fragment the iPhone line into many different models it's still hard to see why one of those models couldn't cater to people who prefer a more compact phone. The beauty of such differentiation is that you, who don't want such a phone, would not be compelled to buy one.

The SE was worth it because:-

  • no notch
  • screen size operable with one hand
  • home button
  • touch ID

Without these features the SE is just the cheap iPhone, which is ok if you do not want all the bells and whistles.

I am already thinking of moving to a Pixel with GrapheneOS

As an avid SE user, someone who refuses to use OLED and small phone evangelist, this is horrible news. I was really hoping for a Mini with an LCD display, which was always a long shot.
I'm guessing that Apple don't want to sell to current SE users at all, if this rumor is true.

I would most likely try a Mini Sized SE if it stayed Touch or had both.

Definitely yes to 1 and 4. 2 I would like it a little bigger. It's too small for me as a Primary. 3 I wish they would go to Touch on Power.

5.8" should be the smallest they go IMO. I know the people who love the mini size will freak at this but it is what it is. I still have an iPhone6 that I use as a work phone and the screen size it annoying and too small IMO. I know the mini is a little bigger but not much when I saw it in person.

I will happily consider anything sub-6.1”. Otherwise what’s the point of this 6.1” SE model when we can buy the previous year’s 6.1” basic iPhone at a similar price?

I see this question asked and answered in most every SE news thread.

The SE has the advantage of offering more longevity than prior years’ phones. This is because it gets the newest processor and will be supported for as long as the rest of the current year lineup available at the time of its release.

Additionally, the SE has always been offered at a price that is below every other phone available new from Apple at the time it is launched.

Why? The mini failed.

It did not "fail"
They sold plenty of them -- just not "enough" (apparently)

The Mini's are not some money losing operation and its' beyond frustrating that Apple refuses to even have products in their lineups that aren't "SMASH IT OUT OF THE PARK HOME RUNS!"

Variety in the product lineups is key to appealing to different parts of the market and different customers.

I will never buy another iPhone if there isn't something akin to the Mini.
Is that a good long term strategy for Apple?

All they need to do here is make the Mini into an "every 3rd year" product
Hopefully they will do that.

To give benefit of the doubt, it may have been that they were deciding between another Touch ID one vs Face ID and decided on Face ID.
He reported a few months back that Apples modem development was dead. He clearly doesn’t have the access he used to and just makes **** up whether it contradicts his previous “analysis” or not.

I hope for the same thing.

As for the “out of the park”, unfortunately Apple is bound by Wall Street’s “law of big numbers”. The mini sold in volumes that other vendors wish a single sku would move at, but that’s a failure in investors eyes.

It did fail. If there were advances in battery tech and the mini lasted longer I'm sure they would sell more, slightly lol. I think they are great sizes but when you try and use iOS or Apps developed for iOS, you notice right away the tilt toward larger screens. Larger screens just provide much more of a canvas, no way around it.
