Lol, yeah I don't think anyone I know would buy a new iphone for this when theirs works perfectly fine. Hardly even know anyone that has a USB-C iphone
I actually do and love it. I bought 15 only because it has USB-C port, now I can get rid of all the slow lightning phone...and cables.

I'm planning to upgrade my XS *next year*. The only way "AI" will factor in my decision of what phone I should get is if it *hampers* any functionality in the iphone 16. Then i will get a 15.

Unless the 16 comes out without a physical sim card slot in Europe too. Then I'll definitely get a 15 :)

There’s plenty of AI apps out there you don’t need the latest phone. Apple is just greedy.

Mmm maybe not. It's easy to throw a frontend to the chatgpt servers (or other servers) on any phone. It's much harder to run a model on local hardware if you don't have dedicated hardware.

Hey, will the iphone 16 trigger another competition investigation since it most likely will have dedicated neural network hardware that 3rd party apps will be unable to access? :)

I heard Apple is still negociating with its AI for terms & conditions, licensing fees etc. These engines are tough bastards when it comes to money.

Since I cant turn it off AI systemwide I refuse to upgrade as long as possible. An App like ChatGPT is sufficient. This goes for M4 Macs as well.

I don’t expect much from Apple and its so-called ‘Apple Intelligence’. Using such a phrase is just plain risky as all get out. I mean, if this thing’ isn’t nearly perfect out of the box, it’s gonna end up like Siri, which is already the butt-end of jokes around the world. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, and gay used to mean happy. We'll be here all day arguing the origin of idioms. Nobody uses that phrase these days in reference to an antidote to poison.
I guess you didn’t look it up. It’s not literal. The salt in the idiom functions as an antidote. That’s the common, modern usage of “take it with a grain of salt” or “take it with a pinch of salt.” So it’s fine to say something like, “take it with a lot of salt” or “take it with a large pinch of salt.”

Maybe you could explain how you understand the idiom again. Your understanding of it makes no sense to me.

I've talked to people of various ages and interest levels in technology, and no one seems to care about it very much. There seems to be some minimal interest among enthusiasts, and that's about it. I don't see this driving sales at all.
Did you ask them if they were interested in AI as a general concept, or did you ask them about AI/ML enabled use cases like object removal in photos, a much smarter Siri, etc.?

How do you know we can't? I have Siri fully disabled on my phone and mac. I don't see why the chatty AI stuff wouldn't be able to be disabled.

While I am not in a hurry to upgrade from my 13 mini, I hope whatever future device I have I can disable the AI dystopia or the industry sprung to another word, they can hype up in their marketing...

Generative "AI" is completely worthless. It can't do anything reliably, repeatably or in a trustworthy manner. It's just the latest techbro grift like the blockchain and NFTs before it. Even the name is a lie, there's zero intelligence involved. No-one is buying a phone just for this.
All these “no one is” or “nobody wants” messages are very blind and silly. I do.
I had zero intention of buying a new phone, but would 100% buy it for all the apple AI features. The only thing putting me off now is the newer info that less will be available, but that doesn’t in any way mean “no one is buying a phone just for this”. If I am, then millions others will. Just like millions of others won’t.

Phones are getting harder to innovate but iPhone sales are HALF of Apple's revenue. HALF! I don't think many people outside of Apple are viewing "Apple Intelligence" as a of must-have feature. Hardware innovations like emergency satellite texting, optical zoom, larger screen/battery are what get people excited about new phones especially since anyone with a semi-recent phone can still upgrade iOS.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Apple in the next 10 years. Will iPhones remain responsible for half of their revenue? Will Vision Pro be anywhere near as successful?
