A year ago, mini-LED panels were about 10 times as expensive as normal LCDs. While the prices have dropped somewhat, they are still significantly pricier.

That’s why some people think OLED makes more sense for all  product regardless of screen size and mini-LED likely wouldn't able to provide a significantly better battery life on the mobile device.

So, LCD is slowly on its way to extinction...
Not really. Mini-LEDs are despite the grandiose name just LCDs with extra bells and whistles, as are many currently available "quantum dot displays", such as Samsung's QLEDs.

To elaborate: "mini-LED" displays are LCDs with a backlighting layer consisting of indivually addressable LEDs. And "QLED" displays (and similar displays from other manufacturers like Sony or LG) are just LCDs with an extra layer of quantum dot filters on top enhancing brightness and colour gamut.

I wish they stopped with this misleading marketing already.

Since Apple already showed interest in MicroLED I was hoping they would adapt that technology directly. Maybe they will in the iPhones first, where it makes more sense. It might also not be good enough for Apple yet.
We'll see but MiniLED is a least a step in the right direction.

Why not go directly to microLed, if Apple uses Mini Leds first you can bet it will take another 5 years before they start using Micro Led displays, so 7 years from now.
Put money into microLed instead of these "in between solutions".

µLED are still far too expensive and there are still no commercially available panels, and there probably won't be any before next year - at the earliest. Everything publicly shown so far were prototypes.

No, mini-LED will beat OLED, just like Pro Display XDR already beats OLED.

Apple isn't betting on mini-LED just for fun. OLED has several compromises, those are reasons why Apple is skipping OLED for premium productivity devices.

OLED is thinner, but offers relatively poor color accuracy and brightness compared to mini-LED.

For iPad Pro and MacBook, thinness doesn't matter as much as iPhone.

You are confusing miniLED with microLED. "miniLED" is bascially just a small LCD tv with a ton of local dimming zones. It only gets close to OLED blacks and requires a heatsink to keep the thing cool to get that kind of brightness. It has to get that kind of brightness to boast the 1:1000000 contrast ratio.

I think the latest pro line are thin enough Apple. Don’t even think of making them thinner. They should put a bigger battery on iPad if they really want them to be a laptop replacement. Can’t imagine using my iPad that is plug in to power all the time when they should be more portable than laptop.

It makes more sense to skip mini-LED.

If you are concern about battery life then mini-LED won't be a good choice for your device.

iPad Pro has ProMotion, I don't think they can ship an OLED model with lower refresh rate so I hope they'll be able to run this new Mini LED displays as 120Hz, and that would be great on the iPhone too!
Maybe that's how they'll differentiate between iPhone and iPhone Pro, OLED on the entire lineup but ProMotion only on the Pro and no more LCD, I'd love that

Though the tech is expensive right now, there is no saying how it will play out by the end of next year.

Mini-LED It is currently expensive because it is produced in small volumes. In large volume (>>than MP XDR screen volume), the prices will drop. So no, the iPad does not need to be more expensive because of a new screen technology.

Disappointing that there are no rumours about larger than 12 inch display for iPad.

There are numerous product with OLED capable of running at 120Hz.

Ignore this post, I thought the article said MicroLED...

If it was MicroLED it would be what I've been waiting for. I would be fine to wait until 2022-2024 for MicroLED though... so Apple perfects it.
Imagine deeper OLED blacks and brighter whites... and even more accurate colors without image burn in and it last longer than LCD and OLED. *mind would be blown.

Not the same technology exactly, but if my experience of local dimming on TVs is any indicator, this won't hold a candle to OLED. Time will tell of course.

I honestly don’t think any Apple product will have this tech in 2020. And the cynic in me doesn’t even think it will be “Apple Approved” until late, late 2021 or 2022... We all know Apple doesn’t adopt or use new display tech or major tech first, so it’s hard to say they’d do it first, they aren’t like they used to be in putting out products with major tech first. And with MicroLED being so uber expensive and hard to make, there’s not a moderately good chance that Apple would use them on iPads or Macs first, either.
OLED is becoming much cheaper and more readily available and getting better and better. While I personally prefer Micro LED and believe it’s vastly superior to OLED... it’s still extremely expensive, and Apple won’t make it on devices that regular blokes like myself will buy. I’m hoping I’m wrong and Apple is actually innovative again for a change... **by getting proper MicroLED out before others while also having perfected it.

if it’s 2021 I imagine the iPad prices will start at some crazy price like $999.99 for 64GB 11” iPad Pro. Look at how much iPhone X was and how much its predecessors still are. 🤔

Kallum.
This article is about miniLED though, which is basically just a glorified LCD, and not MicroLED, which is an entirely new technology. MicroLED will come eventually but we're not there yet. In the meantime, miniLED is a good step in between and quite easy to adapt. Not that hard for Apple.
