Stupid question, but I plan to get the X and I plan to disable face id for the time being. How do you unlock the phone or type in the passcode without the home button? do u just press the power button to wake the phone? If you choose not to use any passcode does pressing the power button bring u straight to the home screen?

Apple has a long history of making tech decisions that supposedly were so far ahead of what users wanted that they were definitely going to blow up in their faces, this time for sure. In the end all of these moves were not only accepted, but turned out to be ahead of the curve. Odd that after all these decades of Apple's philosophy being made so abundantly clear that they can still be criticized for doing what they do best. We can call this another variation on the long-running theme of "Apple is doomed." Never gets old, I guess.

I get your point, and I know Apple have had success with this, I do think there is a limit though. The fact that they have had success with this in the past, does not mean they will have success with this forever in the future. A good product for me, as a consumer, is a product that is convenient and works well my my work flow. When I have to adapt that workflow to accomodate for lacking features, it is no longer a good product. I do feel that, the last few years, we have seen some strange design decisions.

If you are saying it's possible for Apple to goof, I'd agree. Sure, it's always possible. They've goofed on occasion, but usually in small ways that could be and generally were corrected. What I am arguing against here is the idea that Apple might have goofed in rolling out a major feature of their flagship product, and might already have a plan for backpedaling to a feature they'd decided was superseded by a new and better one. It's pretty tough to come up with a scenario where that would not be a catastrophe of historic proportions for Apple. As such the possibility that consumers won't find FaceID to be at least as useful as the tech it replaces is so small as to be not even worth considering.

Raise to wake or tap to wake.

I expect a solid reception. This isn't a gimmick - the amount of modeling and security built into face ID is more than any previous phone biometric system.
I don't think the security of it is what will keep it from getting a good reception (unless it can easily be fooled which I would hope not). But if in real world use, using Face ID takes much longer than touch id or is socially awkward, then it will not go over well with users.

heh.. we're (general population) seeing tech now that big brother has had for years..

like--> here's what's about to happen and it's going to be a kind of weird for a while..

people are going to use the animoji stuff.. and it's going to be fun and neat etc..
more masks will be made by others to build upon the animals collection..
and that will be cool too.. fire breathing and stuff like that..
someone will make a george bush mask..
and youre going to use it and be amazed at how real it looks etc..
then you're going to start wondering -- who, or what, exactly have we been seeing when we're watching television

LIES, we have been fed lies.
