I hear some people saying that the iPad mini is like the iPod touch - pointless. Or that the larger iPhones have made the need for an iPad mini obsolete. But last i checked, Apple still sells the ipod touch, although i do think it’s days are numbered. And you cannot use the Apple pencil on the iphone pros. Unlike the ipod touch, iPad mini is still very relevant. Maybe with the rumored 8” foldable iPhone in 2023 the mini will become obsolete... i dunno. But as an artist, an iPad mini is still a great tool. I currently have a larger iPad Pro which i use for video editing & drawing on....but I would love for Apple to release an iPad mini with the flat edged design of the pros that i could use my apple pencil 2 on when i want to travel light. On principal alone I refuse to buy a first gen apple pencil when I already own an apple pencil 2.

Was contemplating pulling the trigger on a 5, as I really like the form factor for bedtime use, but will wait until fall.

Here's hoping I'm wrong and it's not just a spec bump to A14.
The A12 Bionic is fast enough for me and most. However the Mini 4's A8 was sluggish.

I wonder how long I am going to wait for iPad mini with USB-C in order to finally get rid of Lightning cables.

They should kill this thing. Apple is too lazy to EVER update this. Oh and now a delay for this upcoming non-update. How long will they keep this machine on Lightning port and round touch ID button? 5 years after the Pro got rid of them? 10?
As long as they can keep selling into vertical markets that will use the device as @sracer stated, Apple is going to keep updating it. Your comment is nonsensical at best.

Apple had updated some new colours for the Smart Cover during the spring event. So a fall release should be plausible.

It should be great to switch to the current iPad Air design, as long as it doesn’t have THAT camera bump

Did they actually update the smartcover during the Spring event? Only two iPad models still use smartcovers... iPad Mini and 8th gen iPad.

Part of me wishes this is what Apple would do:
1) Keep the current Mini 5 in the lineup but drop the price down to $299 (good for the vertical markets)
2) Have a Mini "Air" line which mimics the current iPad Air and uses the same form factor, processor, TouchID, USB-C and keep it at the $399 price
3) Have a Mini "Pro" line which has all that Kuo/MR reports of Mini-LED and the like, and push it to $499

Obviously, Apple is not that invested in the Mini line, but having options never hurt too many people (other than Apple - ie iPhone Mini)

I never expected Apple to update the mini so quickly after they waited 4 years between the 4 and 5. Nice to see they are giving the mini love. Still pretty satisfied with my 5 though. Performance is great, and I don’t care about promotion or mini led or face Id (prefer Touch ID) so I’m indifferent to gains in those areas. I think having thick top/bottom bezels is more advantageous than not, and I use the headphone port for audio work, so it would be a bummer to lose those. The only thing I wished at times was flat edges with pencil 2 support, but I find I use the pencil with the mini so rarely, and I already have the pencil 1, that it’s not a big deal. But maybe I would use the pencil more with it if it supported pencil 2 I dunno.

I’d love a redesigned Mini as well. The Touch ID power button is great in the Air, but I’d love a smaller form factor for art and media consumption. If that happens, the Mini would probably become my main iPad.

And nice call on the colors (I’d rather have iMac bright than pastel.)

I dunno about this rumor. I know the iPad mini gets no love and sometimes is not updated for 2-4 yrs...and now with rumors of an 8” foldable iPhone coming in 2023...perhaps will be discontinued altogether.... BUT I still would love to see an iPad mini with the flat edged design of the iPad Pros. As an artist who uses a larger iPad Pro, I would love to have an ipad mini that I could use my Apple pencil 2 on when I want to travel light.

Inches of a display is rather pointless for comparison without knowing its aspect ratio. The wider the aspect ratio you have and the smaller the overall screen area becomes relative to its size in inches.

iPhone 12 Pro Max features an ultrawide 19.5:9 aspect ratio measuring 6,7-inches diagonal. This sounds rather close to the iPad mini with its 7,9-inches diagonal. But because of its 4:3 aspect ratio making it far less wide and much closer to being a square the screen area of the iPad mini is much larger compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max even-though the amount of inches when measuring diagonally makes it sound they are barely 1-inch apart.

We don't really know what a foldable iPhone might end up looking like. But the iPhone is still far from having anything close to the same screen size as an iPad mini.

I'm aready overdue for a new phone (have the 8) and new watch (still on S1) in the fall, so a new mini (love the 5) might make me go for the trifecta!

Sadly, my iPad mini 4's battery is about to be done and is unlikely to be able to wait until then. 😭
So, got a new Air 4 256GB for $599 last week.
I do not work for them and have no association with them.
Just sharing a good deal.

Judging from other folding smartphones that have been marketed, I seriously doubt a $2000 folding iPhone will be a viable option to get instead of an updated $400 iPad mini which costs an estimated 1/5th as much. They are totally different markets.

An iPad Mini with Pro form factor and mini-LED display is top of my device wish list. I adore my iPhone 12 Pro Max but I still find it too small for many situations, whereas my iPad Pro 12.9 is often too big. An iPad Mini Pro would become my go-to device for so many situations, and I could then happily move to a cheaper and more pocket friendly phone, while keeping my iPad Pro for mobile yet heavy lifting tasks.

Touch ID in the power button like on the new Airs would be icing on the cake.
Agreed. I think I could go without a phone in most situations and just carry a mini. That said, am not going to invest in that experiment until the mini has the form factor of iPad Air/Pro.

The form factor is now on an enterprise time frame, just like the ipod touch. Basically it's core to a bunch of embedded solutions and can't change for a while.

Would love to have a Mini but the price is just too close to the iPad Air.

Make it the same price as the base iPad.

Let's be honest, iPhone SE and iPad mini are just backup model to consume over-ordered chips. They will be updated when the next-gen iPhone sale crashed.
