Improved low light camera performance? Holy cow, how much better can they make it? I still get amazed after taking photos in near darkness with my 12 Pro Max.

The camera in the 12 is phenomenal... I don't use the iPhone's wide angle in low light situations much at all. I do sometimes use a 17-28mm wide angle lens, but on my Sony A7 for long exposure astroscapes. A7C00576.jpeg

Why do I need to pay more and more for camera improvements?

Isn't it just a phone?

Please show us innovation from iPhone not just camera every new model seriously.
Because camera is the only thing companies can truly try and improve on each year. not much can be improved.

least this year we should see 120hz and Touch ID.

Why do people care about/like the ultra wide camera? I find it to be the most useless out of the 3, and quite frankly would much rather have 5x or 10x than 0.5x. If the iPhone 12 had 1x and 2x I would buy it over the pro, the only thing that makes its camera system VERY underwhelming is having that pointless 0.5x

“People” care because you can take footage(pictures or video) in tighter spaces while still getting the part you want of the subject in frame. For daily use I grab a LOT of footage(especially video) of my daughter running around. We don’t live in a castle so us peasants need a wide angle lens for indoor shooting in many situations ;).

Almost daily I use it to take beautiful wide-angle pictures :).

Just because YOU think it‘s pointless. But I and many many other people use it to take great images: https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=ultra+wide&cm=apple/iphone_11_pro

I don’t get it either. I have an iPhone X and I’m very happy with it, but I would’ve upgraded this year had the iPhone 12/12 Mini included a telephoto lens. I don’t care about ultra wide, very few photos that I capture would’ve been better in an ultrawide format than they were in the 1x / 2x equivalents.
See above :)

This is for the ultra-wide, which usually has inferior sensor/lens than the main camera in the first place.

There are still a lot of possible improvements in low light with the advancement of ML. I mean look what the Pixel can do with 2 year-old camera sensor. The race is now in the ML/ISP side as the main SoC is already fast enough for years to come.

I upgrade every year. But it is getting harder to justify it these days as the smartphone space matures.

But i would really like to see an iPhone with a zoom like the S21 Ultra has.

It's because Apple is not targeting the previous year's iPhone users anymore, nor the two previous iPhone generations. The upgrade cycle of consumers on smartphones are getting longer since, well, even the iPhone 6s is still being supported in iOS14, and performs well for its age.

Apple doesn't force us to buy iPhones on a yearly basis. That's on us, it's our own money afterall. :D Let's upgrade wisely, only when the exact set of features meets your current needs.

Right now, my iPhone 7+ that I bought last year performs really fast and well. I have zero needs to upgrade to a newer iPhone (added on the ridiculous markup Apple put in my country). I'll be waiting for the 3rd gen SE for my upgrade. :)
I wholeheartedly agree with your statement! If it wasn't for a water damaged FaceID on my iPhone X, I would have held on to it for dear life, but as repair is unreasonable, since it boils down to exchanging for a refurb unit, I use it as a backup and got an 11 Pro Max instead and I couldn't be happier as well. I've really been missing the ability to take pictures in the dark and it delivers. Unless there's a dramatic change in the camera array and further substantial upgrades I won't be updating anytime soon because of common sense and ecological reasons. Also forking over in excess of $1k for a phone every year seems just silly.

The 12 is the first annual upgrade I skipped EVER, and my 11PM will be my longest-serving iPhone ever as well. Just couldn't justify the upgrade for what I use the iPhone for, and the main reason for that fell to the camera. Just wasn't enough of an update all around to warrant the upgrade. My 11PM takes awesome photos and videos for my work.

My girlfriend feels the same way about her XS Max as well, but we will both upgrade this fall for sure.

Like others have said, it's getting harder and harder to justify upgrading every year for just cameras.

The camera I care about the least. The rumoured periscope zoom lense in the 2022 iPhone intrigues me more.

It’s basically been iteration since the iPhone X. Put a iPhone 12 next to X and you could hardly tell the difference unless you turn them around. I’m still using my 6s as a backup. The phones have gotten good enough to the point where every year upgrades are unnecessary. There are some who swear by it, but with so many staying home, mask fatigue. Camera upgrades are feeling like redundant especially minor bucket list improvements that seem to be targeting YouTubers who review them.

I personally will eventually upgrade but I am going stretch it out. I see each iOS upgrade as my ‘new’ iPhone every year.

also using the role out of 5G (more mature) and the pandemic as a barometer. So, 2023 or even 2024 is likely to be my upgrade path.

I’ll be honest, that’s the weakest link in the 11 Pro cameras. Otherwise, I’m quite happy with the cameras still. Really hoping the 2021 iPhone Pros have Touch ID integrated into power button like the iPad Air on top of FaceID. That alone would get me to upgrade because I already love the design of 12 Pro and supposedly we get a smaller notch this year as wel.

for sure, i'm happily still on my xs. i thought about upgrading to the 12 before i saw the actual launch presentation, which didn't wow me once. let's see if 13 will.

Yeah I look forward to what’s new in iOS rather than what’s new in hardware because phones just can’t do anything different and really hardly any do anything better year over year. We are well past being wowed by hardware every year. The last major iPhone break through in cameras was the iPhone 11 Pro, and before that, the 7 Plus. The last major design change was the iPhone X. We are essentially still there, although the 12 design is really nice with the flat sides. Makes the bezels looks a bit smaller.

You don't. Simply purchase a phone from another manufacturer that offers the innovations you're looking for.

Can you list a half dozen innovations that would interest you?

Not sure about the flat sides without any chamfering at all. I liked the idea but found the execution lazy. Ergonomically it works OK with a smaller phone like the mini but with the Max it's not and it feels larger in hand than its curved predecessor. The black 12 looks REALLY good but when it comes to stainless steel Pro's, the previous curved design felt more premium. The flat bright sides feel like a kitchen appliance with a ton of fingerprints.
