Just a few days after iPhone 13 pre-orders began, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is looking ahead. In a research note seen by MacRumors, Kuo shared some of his key hardware expectations for next year's tentatively named iPhone 14 Pro models, including a hole-punch display and a 48-megapixel Wide lens for the rear camera system.

A hole-punch design refers to a display with only a small circular cutout for the front camera, as seen on many recent Samsung smartphones. This design would result in the notch being removed, with Face ID sensors likely moved under the display. Kuo said Apple is also working on iPhones with under-screen Touch ID for release in 2023.

As for the rear camera, the 48-megapixel Wide lens would be an upgrade from the 12-megapixel Wide lens on iPhone 13 Pro models.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 14 lineup in the second half of 2022, in line with usual launch timing. Kuo also reiterated that Apple plans to release a third-generation iPhone SE with 5G support in the first half of 2022.

In line with research shared by Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty this morning, Kuo said pre-orders for the iPhone 13 series have been higher than iPhone 12 series, particularly for the higher-end Pro models.

Looks like a Tick-Tock cadence for rear camera design. Sounds promising.

I was planning on upgrading this year, but I couldn't bring myself to spend $1300 for the 13 Pro Max since my 11 Pro Max is still a great phone. I'm looking forward to the iPhone 14 now and I'm definitely hoping for some big upgrades for the next generation, but hoping they keep the squared edges. I had a 6s+ before the 11 Pro Max, so I'd really like to get something that feels substantially different in-hand.

1.) I like the new design; much better than current !

2.) NOT a BIG fan of the Higher Res image sensors, but that has been the trend the past few years with other smartphone manufacturers; better low-light perf is the key benefit.

3.) The 256 GB NAND Flash storage requirement to get 4K ProRes effectively killed my desire to upgrade this year !

Will stick with my 11 Pro Max for one more year !

4.) The A15's CPU (High-Perf core) is still a BIG UN-known, & needs to be fully Analyzed BEFORE pulling the trigger on ANY $1K+ buy anyway, so there are actually two issues, at least in my case.

tbh, that looks worse than a "notch" (and the notch doesn't bother me). The notch at least looks contiguous with the edges of the phone / bezel, whereas the "hole punch" just looks, well, like someone shot a hole through your screen.
100% that ****ing mole is more annoying than the notch, but i am not defending the notch, just tech is not ready yet..
