I’ve been on a 2 year cycle for the past couple generations and I think that makes the most sense as far as feeling bigger changes between generations. The 13 Pro has several meaningful features that will keep it feeling fresh for a while-ProMotion, Cameras, battery life, and design.

Apple plans to add a 48-megapixel camera lens to the iPhone next year, followed by a periscope lens in 2023, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a research note today with TF International Securities, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said these iPhone camera upgrades over the next two years will help to boost Taiwanese manufacturer Largan Precision's market share, revenue, and profit.

Kuo did not provide any further details, but he has previously claimed that the 48-megapixel camera will be limited to iPhone 14 Pro models and allow for 8K video recording, up from 4K currently. These high-resolution 8K videos would be suitable for viewing on Apple's AR/VR headset that is expected to launch next year, he said.

Kuo also previously claimed that iPhone 14 Pro models may support both 48-megapixel and 12-megapixel output, which would likely be achieved with a process known as pixel binning. Already in use on some Android smartphones, like Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra, pixel binning could allow iPhone 14 Pro models to shoot 48-megapixel photos in bright conditions and 12-megapixel photos in low-light conditions to preserve quality.

Further ahead, Kuo reiterated his belief that at least one iPhone 15 model will gain a periscope lens in 2023, paving the way for significantly increased optical zoom. This lens would have folded camera optics, where light absorbed by the image sensor is bent or "folded," allowing for increased optical zoom while maintaining a compact design appropriate for smartphones.

Huawei's P40 Pro+ features a periscope lens with up to 10x optical zoom, for example, while iPhone 13 Pro models are limited to 3x optical zoom.

Why on earth would anyone need a 48MP camera?

sounds like my 13ProMax will get upgraded in 2023 ;)
Periscope lens will be awesome, pixel binning not so much and 8k video even less, for me ...

Why on earth would anyone need a 48MP camera?
Probably not most people. I have a 24MP mirrorless and really rarely "need" the files it outputs, but there are a couple benefits, like being able to crop in a lot and still have a decent resolution image when you're done.

Also, I'd imagine that for a lot of applications the camera would be downsampling and using all that resolution to provide more pixels for computational photo algorithms to pick from.

I have a work Samsung that does the 48mpx pixel binning and it didn't really make much difference tbh (not that could see). The photos still went down to 12mpx.

I suspect Apple would implement this in a much better way but I think think for the average person it wouldn't make much difference.

That being said I do like on my 13 Pro I at least can change the camera colour processing through scenes (although it doesn't impact the processing unless you shoot in Raw).

Looks like the iPhone 15 will be my next model after my 11 Pro Max if it contains a periscope camera. :)

While I don't put a lot of trust in these rumors, I do hope that future iPhones adopt a greater optical zoom than just 3x. A great 5x or 10x optical zoom would be very handy in certain scenarios.
Yes but then you need another 3x zoom, which is also actually more practical than 5X or 10X in most scenarios. So if they are going to go 10x, it should be offered as a 4th lens instead of replacing 3x.

Reactions: the future
I wish Apple had bought Sony a while back. Not just for their content, like movies and games, but for their cameras and other technologies that aligns with Apple’s.

Hmm I don’t really see the point here.
There will be something better year for year. That’s how it goes and it doesn’t make the iPhone 13 bad in any way.
Any kind of periscope lens (if true) for the iPhone 15 won’t make the 14 bad in 2023.
We had years with less exciting iPhones, like the Xs, but even this phone had some great improvements over the X while it literally looks exactly the same. Just look at the iOS 15 features like text recognition on photos - only support by the Xs and later phones.

I don’t see any kind of reason to bash buyers of the 13 phones now. These are great phones.

A significant increase in optical zoom capability can be realized by hiding a long vertical lens inside the case of the iPhone, leaving the lens opening at the top where it already is, eliminating the need for a “periscope.” In fact, an optical pipeline of mirrors could be routed around the case interior several times… assuming further space savings can be achieved by reducing the footprints of other interior components.

A camera upgrade could include a way to get rid of glare while taking pictures of a smooth surface illuminated by indoor lighting. It could be a feature in picture editing; remove the glare.

This sounds like photography nerd semantics. And yet… some how I am curious what it means.

Great. I think the iPhone pictures look kinda bad the second you zoom in a bit, they lack a lot of detail and look very overprocessed. Hopefully this new sensor will help with at least one of these problems.
Unless they found a way to overcome the laws of physics, tiny camera phone sensors are gonna look crappy compared to much larger DSLR sensors. Megapixel is how the hook the naive masses. Replace the f2.0-2.7 lense an f1.0 lense on and you can improve image quailty without over processing.
Outdoors on a bright sunny day, f1.0 don't mean jack. But most people take photos indoors, f1.0 would be massive improvement over f2.0.

I just hate the current Mt. Everest sized camera bump - I'm going to hold onto my iPhone 6s until Apple come up with phone that doesn't wobble like crazy when you use it on a flat surface. The number of megapixels on their cameras exceeded anything I need or care about quite a while ago.

Anything what Xiaomi or Samsung does Apple does 3-5 years later. Got it.
Punchhole, always-on Display, faster loading speeds…
Nothing new for Apple user.
But to have features as the first is not always the best.
