Yes but then you need another 3x zoom, which is also actually more practical than 5X or 10X in most scenarios. So if they are going to go 10x, it should be offered as a 4th lens instead of replacing 3x.
Moving to the periscope arrangement would mean they can essentially put a miniaturized version of this lens below mounted perpendicular inside the phone, allowing you to pick any focal length within its range: 3x, 5x, 6.25x, whatever you want between the wide and telephoto ends of the range.

I just hate the current Mt. Everest sized camera bump - I'm going to hold onto my iPhone 6s until Apple come up with phone that doesn't wobble like crazy when you use it on a flat surface. The number of megapixels on their cameras exceeded anything I need or care about quite a while ago.
I hate the bump too, but once you put a case on, the problem disappears.

I wish Apple had bought Sony a while back. Not just for their content, like movies and games, but for their cameras and other technologies that aligns with Apple’s.
So I would be playing on an AppleStation 5 now instead of my PlayStation 5? More likely Apple would keep the iconic PlayStation name.

Ideally, they would offer a Pro Mini option with the 48MP sensor.

Sadly, they may be going the other direction (canceling the Mini). Why are we penalized for having small pockets and decent eyesight?
I know tons of people who were asking for smaller iPhone and bought a bigger one when it was released. Who should we blame for iPhone mini will be axed?

Finally apple moving with the times with more MP. Just a shame no periscope lens for another two years.

Actually... the iPhones have NO optical zoom. They just offer 2 or 3 different focal lengths. The zoom applied for everything in between is digital.
Oh really, thanks for that, that makes sense, otherwise they'd need physically moving lenses. As a bonus, prime lenses are higher quality, as providing moving lens optical zoom always requires a compromise in camera physics. I could actually see Apple solving this by simply putting a 4th "ultra tele" lens in, with mirrors within the camera body to give it the length. The periscope design seems fraught with fragility.

PlayStation with a P1 chip. Combined with Apple TV software. Play games anywhere on an iPad. And imagine a controller designed by Apple.

Finally. This will be an instant upgrade for me if the higher resolution camera is included.

If they can’t get a periscope lens on a big sensor (1” or bigger; or as sensitive for real portraits and cinematic video without AI) fit into something the size of the iPhone mini or smaller without a camera hump and without two or three lenses on the back, then I’ll stick with either the iPhone I have now or whatever SE option is available.

I'd think instead of pixel binning it'd be more like Sony's pixel shift where it takes multiple images at once then stitches them together. Apply already uses Sony sensors.
