The 48MP camera system is expected to be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro models and allow for 8K video recording
Would be funny if that was true and ”Pro” users would still be bottlenecked by the abysmal transfert speed (for this type of content) of Lightning. If £1000 models doesn’t get a Thunderbolt port or an updated Lightning that’s gonna sting…

They need to give some attention to the front facing camera. If I knew how bad the selfie camera was for the 13 pro max , I never would have bought it. Good thing I didn't trade in my xs max.
The selfie camera for the 13 pro max is worse than the XS max?

Why not make the phone thicker to compensate for the larger camera system? It seems like the iPhone camera will intentionally never be flush again.
They need to do this, and split the battery in two (more internal space from increasing thickness, but same battery storage when split) so they can double the charging speed by splitting the charging to two batteries. I watched a video by MKBHD that explained how some Android manufacturers do this and it gets around some of the heat limitations of fast charging that kills your battery. Because honestly the battery on the current iPhone 13 Pro is fine and they just need to make it charge faster.

With some of these new Android phones supporting 150W fast charging, IDK how Apple can keeps scraping by on 20W.

I dont care if its 7000x megapixels.

If the iphone 14 pro does the same TERRIBLE watercoloring processing that the 13 pro does, im done.

all i want is my grainy film like photos back, when zooming

It's because if you're a member of the Apple Camera Design Team, you never look at the "front" of the iPhone - you couldn't care less about it. So they always set the camera face down on the table, and it's flush. ;)

I don't think anyone seriously wants a 48 megapixel photo - I'm thinking it's more likely to implement center stage - so you can automatically look in any direction and still have high resolution. It might also be that advanced image processing (computational photography) benefits from the resolution, but it's not directly used in the end image.

Tangible bullet point at the big reveal show to rationalize a new, higher price.

Tangible additional storage implications to move buyers towards choosing to pay up for larger than "starting at" storage.

???
It's got twice the area of the old lens, so much better light gathering power, which is critical for good photos. Also creates more usable night time images.

What I would give to have a “standard” camera without a bump. I feel the tech is extremely amazing and impressive, but for someone like myself, I couldn’t care less about all these camera improvements. I’d much rather have no bump and better battery life.

so the selling point will be 8k video? will the iPhone pro screen be in 8k too? why is the Studio display only 5k? and my home TV only 4k?
I do know that Pro's move over to 8k, but what's the point for the iPhone?
Better tele zoom capabilities would be a selling point for me, but 8k is not ...
8K video would allow clips to be cropped in post and still allow for 4K export.
8K footage allow 35 megapixel stills to be taken from the frame.
If it isn’t for you fair enough but I would 100% upgrade from 12 Pro Max for this.

Actually, from some CAD files leaked, it seems like the iPhone 14 Pro will actually be thicker than the 13 Pro. However, this thickness is apparently not enough for such big cameras.

They don’t really seem to have any new ideas do they..

It’s just “make the camera better” every year

A fine goal, but at some point we hit diminishing returns I think

What features are YOU missing in a smartphone? Most specs are improved every year, incl the camera.
I’d like to be able to use my smartphone as a “proper” computing device while away from home, by proper I mean projecting to a screen (which I can do via airplay today) and also use a keyboard/mouse… but that kinda would negate the need for an iPad so that’s not gonna happen, from Apple.
And I think that we have plateau’d out re smartphones capabilities, at least for current needs and use cases

35MP in that sensor size isn’t going to do much for me, I will get much better quality photos of my full frame 28MP camera with proper glass for a very long time to come.
I upgraded last year from 11PM to 13PM, so need convincing features to spend 1.5k again this year.

And what other advantages does the 48 mp camera have besides 8K video?
48 megapixels is 4x the resolution of Apple's existing 12mp sensors. In ideal lighting conditions the sensor can operate at true 48mp capacity and either capture more detail or extend the reach of the digital zoom without sacrificing image quality or detail if outputting at 12mp. In poorer lighting situations a 48mp sensor can employ a technique called pixel binning where groups of four pixels essentially act as one larger pixel to output a 12mp image. The larger 4x binned pixels can capture more light and thus produce better dynamic range with less image noise.

Essentially you get the combination of greater detail and/or digital zoom in ideal light inherent with higher megapixel counts while keeping the image quality gains afforded by larger pixel pitches/lower megapixel counts in low light situations.

I love the increase in megapixels, but I wish they'd increase the thickness of the phone so that the camera was flush with the body, and use the extra boom to mega increase the battery

I wonder if it will support pixel binning due to the higher resolution? In any case it provides more cropping options which is always useful. In any case they virtually have to provide the additional resolution these days for marketing purposes.

As to lack of radical smartphone design, realistically how many options are there for variations on a rectangular slab of a thing with a black screen which provides the functions of a phone, a camera and an internet connection? The form factor is pretty much set. You can make them more square or less square and you can make them foldable and then play with where you put a fold but other than that whether you have a round notch or a rectangular notch for the camera makes little to not difference. You either like android phones or iphones and iOS. The functionality differences between the two are as close as makes no difference capability wise. Samsung has been slightly more radical by building folding phones but whether or not there's much value in that is questionable.
