While I’ve designed some systems, a cellular phone is a complex bit of infrastructure and requires a lot of pieces to be done correctly.

If the product lifecycle is as far ahead as it might be, we might be seeing the short comings of covid hitting now.

That or someone didn’t consult someone or the testing scope was quite limited.
All of which are management issues. Apple got the supply chain right, but failed with the design.

As an iPhone 15 Pro max user thus far I’ve only had it run hot once and that’s while it was transferring data from my 12 and downloading apps and syncing to my Apple Watch at the same time. That kind of load I’d think it would run warm at least. Other than that it’s been cool.

Same here, but time will tell. Except I was going to the 15PM from the 14 pro. But watch was setting up too

I noticed this when I was first downloading everything onto the new phone (15 Pro Max) so I plugged it into Ethernet adapter and set it in front of a fan, which helped.

Day to day I’m seeing the “Charging paused until iPhone cools down” message every time I’m using CarPlay but also sometimes when I’m just charging normally in my apartment.

Have been leaving it on low power mode largely since the battery seems to go quick if not.

Also just purchased a Qi charger with a built in fan for charging overnight and during the day / might get one for the car too.

It’s unfortunate to have even be thinking about this every time I plug in and I hope Apple + app developers can figure out a way to not have the CPU heating up so much from normal use.

I don’t even game on it, but it does call into question just how well a game like RE Village will run after the phone warms up from playing it for more than a few minutes. Have to imagine the experience will be noticeably thermally limited unless there’s some iOS bug that’s causing all this.

“Hot to the touch”

So people are equating hot = overheating?

Anything for clicks and paranoia.

Exactly overheating means your phone is shutting off

If the device throttles, turns off the screen, and/or stops charging what should we call it to make you acknowledge the issue?

Seen all three on my 15 Pro since Friday.

Between the poor battery life and overheating I’m experiencing, I may be returning my 15 Pro. It’s uncomfortably hot when charging, connected to CarPlay, or just listening to music and texting. When it gets hot, I can watch the battery percentage drop by the minute. Forget charging in the car. Always pauses due to heat. I thought that the 14 Pro had similar issues, but not like this. I hope all of you are having better luck. If you have any tips send em my way.

Seriously. Saving 0.01 ct on stuff. They did the same S with the M2 Macbook Pros. I told you they need to milk every penny. Instead of innovating.

I have been posting a lot about forced upgrades and this is another decision that only underscores this.

Setup a shortcut, to turn off bluetooth, wifi, and cell data from 1am > 5am and you will see a significant increase in battery life. Set a shortcut automation to turn them back on before you wake up. Apple likes to use this period as an network update period, it seems to excessively use FindMy during this time, which makes no sense as you are home, and some users decide to leave the phone unplugged over night to save battery life.

Poorly written apps: I've seen the Govee Home app, continue to ignore background refresh settings, and will drain your battery because it keeps the bluetooth connection open constantly.

Also TURN BACK OFF all the Privacy Location services that Apple turns back on. I turn all of them of but for Emergency SOS, Networking & Wireless, and FindMy.

My SE2020 had no battery change after the iOS 17.0.1 update because of the automation turning off data services at night. Basic cell service is still enabled, a SMS text message can still come through to you with the above 3 settings disabled. This is better than using Airplane mode because you want to keep a little connection. If you leave Wifi on, it will drain you dry overnight.

Apple is only familiar with iPhones sitting on MagSafe chargers in their store. Once you remove them from the MagSafe, Apple is unsure what really happens outside of their TV an Music applications they perform their tests with.

Good luck!

You’re holding it wrong. If it’s hot to the touch, just avoid holding it in that way.

Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its cooling performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the carbon-neutral heat sinks.

After all these reports and the "breaking" tests, I'm inclined to get a Plus instead of the Pro Max I'm supposed to pick up later today.
The Plus breaks, too. It’s just videos of those breaking don’t pull nearly the name numbers as the Pro Max.

just curious, what are you doing that brings about those behaviors?
