Back at the beginning of this millenium the digital camera makers started the megapixel race. Lost in the flurry of buzzwords dumped onto the public the reality of physics, of light and lenses.

But bigger is better, according to the mantra, so a bigger number of megapixels must be better, no?

No. But magic numbers sell product.

Once the selfie-camera is under the display, it can be much larger and better.

It's been a small subpar camera only because it had to fit in the bezel.

Y’all complaining about the iPhone 15 selfie camera quality and I’m confused.

*laughs in high quality selfies*

I tease.
As someone who takes a lot of selfies since my work partially relies on them, I like the idea of a better selfie camera.

On Instagram I always get a ********* when I comment that most people are too ugly for selfies. I actually include myself. Why should I make a selfie? Does it provide any value for others if they see my face on Instagram? A phone with a front camera makes me constantly feel watched.
I took more selfies when I was younger and single. now not so much. still handsome though ;).

but back on topic…

looking forward to any camera updates.

Can we also get a toggle to disable the horrible machine learning filter (whatever it is called) because selfies on my 15 Plus look horrible. I was actually shocked, coming from my iPhone 12 PM. I hardly take selfies but when I tried to show off the camera capabilities to my family over Christmas, I thought the camera app had a bug and even tried restarting the phone but no, the photos simply look like crap compared to the 12 in low light. It looks perfect BEFORE you take the shot but once you look at the actually photo it has taken, the colours are completely dull and washed out, the image quality is not sharp either. Really disappointed.

Oh and before anyone thinks I am dumb.

Wow, I quickly read that first link … we truly are becoming a world of narcissists. Some of these “influencers” really need a wake up call and get over themselves.

And maybe learn photography - complaining about images washed out when they have a window behind them..

Lucky for you the phone has an indicator that shows when the camera is engaged so you don't need to worry about it spying on you.

Wearing a tinfoil hat while using the phone will also be an effective strategy though.
Even Mark Zuckerberg has a sticker on his notebook cameras and that guy made spying on other people his profession.

Those camera indicators would give me more peace of mind if they where physically wired to the camera, so that either both the indicator and the camera have power or none of them. That's how indicators on almost any electric device work. If they shine, you know that the device has power, because the indicator gets its power from the same source. Webcam indicators are triggered by software though. So it is possible to turn off the power for the indicator, but not for the camera. Why did they choose a more complicated solution that makes the indicator less reliable?

Shoosh..... someone could be listening in on the microphone and monitoring your internet activity. Better to go off grid. No one is safe. Not even those who consider themselves to be too ugly for selfies.
That is why Edward Snowdon opens all his phones and physically disconnects the microphone. If he still needs a microphone to make a call or whatever, he plugs in an external microphone. If you are a big enough target, you have to do that, but who knows if there already is an exploit in Android or iOS that allows bad actors to access the microphones of millions of phones.

Nobody is spying on you.

The iPhone 17 lineup will feature a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

dynamic-island.jpeg

The information was shared in a new post on Medium. The iPhone 14 and 15 feature a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with five plastic lens elements. The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to feature the same hardware. With the iPhone 17, Apple will apparently bolster the hardware to a 24-megapixel camera with a six-element lens. Kuo says that the upgrade will significantly improve the image quality of the front-facing camera.

  • iPhone 6S: 5-megapixel front-facing camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture and 4P lens
  • iPhone 7, iPhone X, and iPhone XS: 7-megapixel front-facing camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture and 4P lens
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13: 12-megapixel front-facing camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture and 5P lens
  • iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16: 12-megapixel front-facing camera with ƒ/1.9 aperture, autofocus, and 5P lens
  • iPhone 17: 24-megapixel front-facing camera with autofocus and 6P lens

The upgraded resolution to 24 megapixels is noteworthy because it would allow for greater detail and clarity in images. With a higher resolution, photos can maintain their quality even when cropped or zoomed in, providing more flexibility in post-processing. Additionally, the larger number of pixels can capture finer details, making the images sharper and more vibrant.

The upgrade to a six-element lens would also slightly enhance image quality. Each element can be designed to correct for various aberrations and distortions, leading to clearer, more accurate photos. The additional elements can also improve the efficiency of light transmission to the sensor, enhancing low-light performance.

It is worth noting that the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to be the first ‌iPhone‌ to feature under-panel Face ID technology, which could reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, but a circular cutout for the front-facing camera is expected to remain. The iPhone 17 Pro will probably be Apple's last premium model to include a circular cutout for the front-facing camera. Apple is then expected adopt under-display cameras in 2027's "Pro" ‌iPhone‌ models for a true "all-screen" appearance.

They are so far behind they'd rather focus on dynamic island gimmicks and extra buttons than real features

I'll believe the under display camera when I see it.

From what I've seen so far, it's pretty bad. But hopefully in 3 years, they'll have worked out any issues.

I don’t take many selfies. I’m not that in love with myself. But the few that I take are usually with friends and colleagues and rarely in great light. So improved low-light performance is a plus. Higher resolution? Maybe not so much - especially for selfies, which are portraits.

Keeping resolution at 12mp would still be adequate and if the lens and sensor could be made larger because they are under screen, the photo sites in each pixel could be larger, thus capturing more light and improving image quality.

But, as others have noted, bigger/more is always better in the world of marketing and in the hive mind of the worldwide web.

There was a post about this years ago, I forget which phone version. Seems like they over-tuned it for selfies to the point that it’s useless. Try it with a third party camera app like Halide.

This computational photography crap has gotten out of hand. We’ve gone beyond compensating for less than perfect sensors, to just straight up making **** up.

It may be that with the 15 they actually tuned it back to be more in line with reality, as some of your links seem to indicate.

So only one year for the hole punch camera before going to full-screen display? I had planned on getting the 17, but now I don’t know.

Me: iPhone 21 camera will be better than the previous ones.

Ffs stop nonsense like this.
