Punching a hole in the screen over having a small bezel on top is a great example of form over function. Why would I even want an all screen device? Whats the advantage? I rather have a complete screen with a bezel than all screen that is chipped from side to add a camera

The fact that Apple developed unlocking with Apple Watch and FaceID with mask support already means that Apple is not interested in adding back TouchID. This is just Kuo backpedalling.
True, I don't miss it myself - only minor complaint is some apps don't work consistently with FaceID. *Glares at MS Outlook*

Apple desperately needs to implement a setting to only attempt to authenticate when it's held upright or something. Idk, I'm not an engineer but there has to be a way to make it differentiate between general movements and being lifted upward to unlock, or only when the user swipes up.
Turn off Raise to Wake?

I just checked and turning off “Unlock iPhone with Face ID” disabled the ability to unlock with Apple Watch.

For apps that use Face ID to login (for example a banking app), you unfortunately still need either Face ID or a password. I hope this is addressed in a future update.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look.
That still rules out these newer phones for me, but I'm hoping my 8 Plus (with new battery) will last long enough for a suitable phone (or Apple watch substitute) to appear. I'll not hold my breath. ;-)

What makes you think TouchID couldn't?
There are no public fingerprint readers, it’s not like the public camera network that’s growing every day. Imagine walking into a bar and the server knows your name and credit worthiness before asking you for your order. Or better yet knows you’ve just lost your job and turns you away despite having cash because the camera system said so. FaceID is flawed in the fact that your loosing your identity to whoever will pay for it and you’ll never know how it will be exploited.

Why would Apple expose data from FaceID which is supposed to stay on the device in an enclave like I understand is the case with TouchID. Camera surveillence is a big problem I agree, I do know there are a few places with fingerprint scanners, usually government buildings like when you get a passport for example.

Yeah it would've been great to have this feature. It was perfect given the pandemic, but what's the point of adding it now when the pandemic is almost over. Unlock with watch is unreliable for me, doesn't even work anymore. The unlock with mask never worked for me, asks me to look down but still no. I could only wish they spent more time getting these workarounds right, instead of spending so much time on TV shows.

A lot of us are still wearing masks in situations with lots of people, on the bus, at the grocery store, gym, etc. Also medical professionals need to wear masks regardless of COVID.

what exactly is your problem with it?
it is odd because an iPad Pro does a better job with Face ID than an iPhone because is it orientation agnostic. Of course that means you shouldn't put your finger over the sensor ;)

It's not a problem per se, just my preference. I dislike that I can't add more faces since 3 of us use the one iPad. can't reach across the table like I could with on finger to just read the screen and I liked how apple pay worked, pull it out of my pocket, my face no where close to the screen and put it next to the scanner. I understand they will never go back to the home button and fingerprint. Like I said, it's just my preference, no right or wrong. If they would put a better camera in the SE, I'd use that. Just don't want a separate camera if I use the SE and I really like the camera in the 13pro max

Can’t wait for Apple to add this

It would be great to have both Touch ID and Face ID to use as a two-factor biometric authentication for users who want added security on certain apps or to even unlock their iPhone as well
If it is on the same device and using similar technique (biometric) it’s called 2-step identification. 2-factor Identification should at least involve a code to be entered from memory which is what a passcode is for, and more secure apps require a biometric (face/touch) and a code from person’s memory to be entered.

I've parked my iPhone 13 pro max since December when I got my zflip3. I use the finger print reader all the time and honestly it's so much better than face ID.

In saying that, face ID is plenty quick and almost as efficient. It's not like face ID when it first came out where it was kind of laggy. I think Apples face ID is suffient, but they really should add finger print at least like how my kids ipad mini works. Power button.

It's not either or, there's no reason to not have both options - back TouchID, front FaceID. Also when on table and I'm lazy to pick it up I just scribble the pattern on my Android.
The concern here is that FaceID needs a wider angle to capture when flat on a surface and variable length also when flat on a surface. This can be done with a sensor on the back of the phone near the camera square or implemented within the LiDAR sensor to detect distance from a surface. It’s shameful that an iPad Pro can unlock in any orientation and wider angle compared to the iPhone. That is the issue we both can agree on. While TouchID on the rear would address this issue it’s still adding more complexity to the device hardware and software and requires interaction.

Imagine your phone flat on the table screen up and you lean from a sharp angle and/or a distance or unlocks to reveal messages compared to reaching with your hand to place a finger to unlock the device. One seems clumsy the other less restrictive if implemented properly.

Of course, the obvious solution is to include both FaceID and TouchID options on a single phone. Seems like that shouldn't be too hard to do. I prefer Face ID as well, but this could make everyone happy.
Or maybe a better implementation of FaceID would be better with thermal mapping but then the notch will widen again and people will be up in arms.
