The issue with TouchID at the back of the phone is that if it’s resting on the table the mechanism is inaccessible and if it’s in the power bottom it’s at an awkward angle. One could use FaceID but at that point what was the purpose of have TouchID.
It's not either or, there's no reason to not have both options - back TouchID, front FaceID. Also when on table and I'm lazy to pick it up I just scribble the pattern on my Android.

That’s fine. You don’t have to give me a real reason to upgrade. I don’t have to buy a new phone.

I disagree with that in some cases. For me TouchID was usually faster at unlocking because I could feel the physical button while picking it up (or pulling it out of my pocket) and unlock my iPhone before it ever even needs to see my face. For FaceID to unlock I need to hold it up to my face and swipe up.

That is a reason why under the screen touchID doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

Both systems have different strengths. For me TouchID is marginally faster when unlocking the device out of my pocket. It doesn't really matter if your phone is unlocked before it needs to see your face because one way or another you're unlikely to use your phone before it's in front of your face. FaceID maybe adds half a second through swiping up. It's negligible unless someone wants to make it an issue.

Where FaceID is far more convenient and, to some degree, faster is in-app authentication. I use biometrics to unlock plenty of apps, including Outlook, my password manager, several messenger apps and others. The difference is quite noticeable because the it removes the need to actually press anything for the app to open.

I believe the problem is that under display fingerprint sensor tech is not as reliable as capacitive sensor just yet. Optical ones are definitely slower, and ultrasonic ones still have reliability issues. Capacitive sensor is still the gold standard. If Apple decided to have under display TouchID, it has to at least be equal to the capacitive TouchID in terms of performance.
Then just give us the old button back

Lock button finger scanner along with face so either can be used as desired. This is the way.
Can't even count how many times per day I just power up the screen with the button and don't want to unlock it right away with the same button - so it wouldn't work for me either. Plus I remember some situations with other phones in the past pushing the button to lock would activate the unwanted finger unlock back in some cases.

I disagree. When I had my iPhone 6, it took about two seconds for the fingerprint to be recognized before Apple Pay went through. With my iPhone 12, it goes as soon as it recognizes my face.
The new touchID implementations are much faster. It’s pretty much instantaneous on touch on my new 16” MBP and barely slower on my iPA

To be fair, Apple did speed up Touch ID after the 6, but really neither touchID or FaceID take a long time and I don’t see speed of Apple Pay as a major performance metric. ?

I would argue that it's not an issue, but a benefit. I hate how Face ID tries to authenticate when I'm just holding my phone in my hand and walking around. It keeps retrying until it runs out of attempts, then I am forced to enter my passcode when I go to actually use my phone.

The benefit of Touch ID is that it only tried to unlock when you wanted to unlock. I never had false attempts because I controlled whether my finger was on the home button.

This is exactly why I don't like face ID. When I intend to unlock it works fine probably 80% of the time(sometimes fails for no reason though, or for stupid reasons like I put on makeup that day), but in general I have to enter my passcode on my 13 pro more times per day than I have to on my 8+ in a week. Same with every other face ID phone I've had too. If I have to use the flashlight, guaranteed passcode when I'm done. New tech is supposed to improve upon the old tech's user experience and reliability but it's been the opposite experience for me with Face ID, to the extent that I rarely use my 13 pro anymore. Apple desperately needs to implement a setting to only attempt to authenticate when it's held upright or something. Idk, I'm not an engineer but there has to be a way to make it differentiate between general movements and being lifted upward to unlock, or only when the user swipes up.

And before someone tells me I'm just using it wrong, I've tried literally every trick to make it more accurate/less frustrating. It's just a worse experience for me than touch ID. AND THAT IS OKAY. Just because I prefer touch ID doesn't invalidate or challenge anyone else's preference for face ID. I swear I hate this biometric wars crap, use what you like and let other people use what they like. Choice is beautiful.

Apple could put Touch ID in the power button. Face ID is not as secure and with the new work arounds for masks Face ID becomes even less secure than Touch ID.
I don't use FaceID with the mask workaround (I have an Apple Watch and use unlock with watch if I ever need to wear a mask). The probability that a random person in the population could look at your iPhone and unlock it using Face ID is approximately 1 in 1,000,000 (versus 1 in 50,000 for Touch ID) so Touch ID is not as secure by a long shot..

Yeah it would've been great to have this feature. It was perfect given the pandemic, but what's the point of adding it now when the pandemic is almost over. Unlock with watch is unreliable for me, doesn't even work anymore. The unlock with mask never worked for me, asks me to look down but still no. I could only wish they spent more time getting these workarounds right, instead of spending so much time on TV shows.

Is it possible to turn off Face ID and use the watch to unlock, or will it default to the passcode only in such circumstances?
Do you know if apps which accept Touch/Face ID will permit the watch to unlock them?
I just checked and turning off “Unlock iPhone with Face ID” disabled the ability to unlock with Apple Watch.

For apps that use Face ID to login (for example a banking app), you unfortunately still need either Face ID or a password. I hope this is addressed in a future update.

I would appreciate Apple re-implementing touch-ID back on their phones. When I have my phone lying on my desk at work or at home it gets really annoying to have to keep picking it up to unlock it, when with touchID I could just touch the screen whilst it is still laying down to unlock it with no need to have to constantly pick it up to see messages/emails etc.

Just look at your watch to see messages and emails.

FaceID is being shared with all. Pretty soon you’ll never be anonymous walking down the street or anywhere for that matter. Wake up sheeple insist on touchID stop the madness.
