Lol, I love that "buy a Windows" answer. You yourself were just complaining about a manual BMW, guess you should buy a manual car from another brand.
Nice call on cherry picking too, I mean if I'm going to plunk $2K+ on a laptop I'd at least want the piece of mind to know that it won't come apart in at least 2 years and I can use it outside of a sterile clean room.
You missed the BMW point and ignored my other points. See ya

I don’t feel the XR is nor the XS. I feel the X last year picked up a significant amount of sales and most are keeping their existing X.
The XR will absolutely eat into 5.8" XS sales. Maybe even Max sales given the XR is a pretty big screen. Last year X buyers are pretty irrelevant. Very few people upgrade yearly.

What is the allure of these big phones? I'm genuinely curious. I like the SE because it's compact. It can do everything I want and I have an iPad and laptop for movies, typing etc. I've tried the big phones but it just feels like such a compromise... too big to carry around comfortably, too small for watching movies, reading, typing comfortably.

I dunno I think with the upgrade program and more carriers let people upgrade yearly the rate will be far higher now

It’s not. Consumers aren’t stupid. Your bill goes down once you pay off your device. And smartphones don’t change much after 12 months.

I'm not saying it isn't correct, just that I'm stunned. I just can't imagine that huge phone that needs two hands outsells the XS by 3-4x's. Perhaps it is a one off this year since few upgraded from the X and you have a large number of holdouts from the 8 Plus and earlier getting the bigger phone they wanted? I'm surprised.

The XS is so similar to the X that it replaces that it undoubtedly is short on sales.

According to research, yes you are.
Nor according to likes.

Also, like with the last generations, the smaller phone will be more popular eventually, it’s just at launch time, that people who want a bigger phone all go out and buy it. Same when the 6 launched.

Too many posts to read back and I suspect someone might already have said this but here's my take anyway...

I wonder whether the XS is being more impacted by the wait-to-see-the-XR effect than the XS Max is.

I was never going to go with the Max because I have quite small hands and I was pretty confident that my 6s was already towards the size and weight limit I would tolerate but even for me I very nearly waited for the XR to see if maybe I could push things just a bit further and the XR would be the limit on the size and weight that I was willing to carry around with me rather than the XS. For people who were already happy Plus users or who have already decided that they want the biggest screen that Apple can offer them on a phone and are willing to pay for it then there is no reason to wait to have a look at the XR, they might as well get the gratification of buying the XS Max straight away.

If it hadn't been for the fact that I am leaving for 3 months of travels on 17th October I probably would actually have waited to have a look at the XR before updating my 6S but I got impatient and didn't want to leave it until I got back in January to upgrade so I have gone out and bought an XS but even I, with my teeny-tiny hands and preference for smaller phones ("smaller" is all relative of course), was very nearly one of that wait-to-see-the-XR group that I'm hypothesising about.

You might have a point there.

My choice was XS and t's perfect size for me.
[doublepost=1537872311][/doublepost]My prediction is XR will sale more than XS and XS max. Also xr battery life will be better than xs and xs max.

I will never understand why the bigger phone is appealing to people... its ridiculous...
My only guess is that people are opting for something that replaces all their devices yet portable- a phone, a computer, and a tablet all in one device.

That being said I don't mind it as long as Apple continue to make smaller forms, the 5.5inch is more than enough for a smartphone

This is basically the thing for the general consumer buying an iPhone, they get one shot at a new product to sustain them for a while and they opt to get the biggest device they can. I think Apple "baited" in the rest by giving the big device just a touch extra like dual camera, OIS, and most importantly: a bigger battery. I think people are super battery conscious anymore and for the marginal price difference they happily tolerate the bigger screen despite more mass at the sake of having that extra guarantee.

This theory carries forward into my guesses that this will be the reason why the XR will fly off the shelf with sales and be a huge hit for the general consumers.

Traded-up my X for a XS Max in 64GB yesterday and absolutely LOVE it!!! (I missed the large screen on my old 7 Plus), so this is most welcome upgrade. For me personally, the 64GB is plenty. I also use iCloud and iCloud Drive so additional storage capacity is a waste of $$$ IMO.

I am still not convinced that this years iPhone lineup will be a homerun. Too many unclear upgrade paths, price hikes and barely enough new features.
IF you don't value the larger screen of the XS Max, you are most likely correct.

But the list of countries without stable cell data service *and* that have a lot of people that can afford a $1500 cell phone is remarkably short.

There actually really isn't that many places in the US still like that. About 98% of the country's population lives somewhere that there's reasonably reliable cell service.

Just because the list is not large does not mean there is no Market. That’s the point, not how long the list is. I just moved back from 8 years in mexico, not a long list of iphone users but there IS a list that buy through coppel, etc. making payments. Cell data is horrible.

Cell service? OK, but you DO Know a number of of places with cell service does not have data right? A number of people that have cell data do not have fast speeds? Lastly, not everyone has unlimited data. THAT’S part of where there is a market for high capacity phones. All of those together.

I’ve been to 16 countries. Not tiny first world european countries and MANY people live where unlimited data is not an option or too expensive.

So there ARE far more out there than you think.

I have never felt that my 8+ was too big for me. I can use it comfortably with one hand, battery life is good, and it fits into my pockets just fine.

I was toying with my Max and then messed with an old SE and it was nice to be able to get into notifications effortlessly with one hand, I have yet (may be my fat thumbs) to nail down the reachability mode engagement on the X series. I feel that iOS, despite Apple upping the phone sizes each year, was more dialed in with smaller devices in mind. While the Max and Plus models offer more real estate for the screen, I feel like the simple scaling up of the interface size could be worked on to fully segment the bigger phones.

So you can hold it in 1 hand and reach all the keys on your keyboard without moving the phone around? You can also reach the top screen area where apps put navigation buttons?

Have been using it that way since I got the 6S+.

I don’t think so.
iPhone xr will not cannibalise iPhone X’s or X’s max sales.

Apple is going after midrange android oems that bave tried to copy the iPhone X on design and price.

Stats to support "very few people" upgrade yearly?

Just saying, you don't know.

I disagree. It's inevitable that people interested in a new iPhone would bypass the XS and Max for the XR based on price alone.
