Since when is a two year old phone outdated?

I think this may be a U.S. thing more than anything. Tech moves at great speed and in 2 years time many people feel like they may be falling behind. Though with the prices and the general slow down of end-over-end improvements each year I feel that trend may be pushed to 3 years. The average right now seems to be going up

Who is buying these!? Seriously, it is all rich Chinese people? This is the first year that an Apple phone has simply become unaffordable to me, so ho the 256 and 512gb Xs Max are the most popular is beyond me! Oh, and WHY would so many people want such a large phone is beyond me too. Most ppl use phones for taking pics, using the internet, phone, text and a bit of youtube. No need for a HUUUUUGE screen to watch movies on... who does that!? I just want one 1 can use with one hand and that comfortably fits in my pocket.

You're basically saying that you have no desire for a large phone and don't want to pay for one, so nobody else should either.

This is the same old tired iPhone SE nonsense. "Nobody wants big phones and they won't pay that much for them." Yes, they really do want big phones and will pay that much for them.

Spending that much money on a phone is crazy, but I'm probably from a less "phone-centric" generation. I don't feel the need to be connected to everything, everyone, all the time. In fact, I would rather be more disconnected.

This has zero to do with marketing. People want bigger screens. It's not rocket science.

It's true. For previous models people made the argument that the Pluses sold better because they had better features (more RAM and dual camera), but now they are the same spec for spec and people are still choosing the bigger model.

I’m sure glad Apple knows how to build a trashcan Mac Pro, FCPX, a butterfly keyboard and abandon Aperture and a large section of the Professional market.
You seen the numbers for the iPhone?

iPhone is a huge priortiy. Apple continues to make great MacBooks and products for the Mac line will be updated when the data says they need to be updated. Looks like that's coming soon. It's just not going to be as big of a priortiy as mobile computing, because that's what most people use, want, and buy.

I'm enjoying my Max 512. It's a much better size for keeping a good grip on. My eyes like it better too. Web pages are much more legible than the small screen formatted ones. My wife even likes the Plus size phones over the smaller versions.

Conversely it is a great size for people who havr a 1TB Mac. You make it sound like one is exclusive of the other, many people have both.

Yes, I know many people have both. Many have 4TB MBPs and iMac Pros as well but not the average customer. I think the majority of iPhone owners have purchased base models since the beginning because they’re cheaper. The average person is not paying almost $1600 with tax for a phone. Just look at how many people complained about the base 13” MBP price @1799.

I always upgraded every 3 years. The 7 Plus was the sole exception. I never sell my older devices and just hand them down so I’ve gotten about 5 years of utility from all of them.

Buying a new phone every year is a complete waste of money especially if one is the type of idiot to trade in an $800-1000 device for $300 or less to Gazelle. I know many people like that who can’t even be bothered to sell something privately.

What are the rough estimates on when supply can meet demand for the XS max to be sold over the counter in apple stores?

Feels like they've made a decent step forward with the computational photography side compared to when they started bringing in the dual lens phones. So maybe that will have them hold fire on more lenses. Two lenses plus focus pixels should provide a nice amount of data to determine depth

Still not equal to the Pixel 2 however. Apple continues to produce images too warm. Great enhancements to low light capability. :apple:

I wouldn’t call self destructing keyboards, dongles, and losing all your data if the Logicboard is damaged a key selling point of your flagship notebook.
Apple must also have great data, it’s taken them 5-6 years to realize the trashcan didn’t need to exist and all Pro’s wanted was a tower with Thunderbolt and USB3.
Also your iOS apps can’t exist without Macs.

Nice cherrypicking of small scale issues.

1) The 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports are hugely versatile and many people would love that versus a single use port. Again, data.
2) Data backup is your responsibility. How many logicboards have failed? Who has lost data as a result?
3) Show me numbers on "destroyed" keyboards. Don't eat over your $2k MacBook to start and Apple updated the keyboard so people that don't take care of their stuff can be careless with impunity.

How many people wanted Pros? Do you have insight into Apple's customer data or overall strategy?

Apple is executing a long term strategy and is focusing product/resources on the biggest revenue drivers at Apple. More frequent updates simply don't make sense on their smaller product lines and Apple has all the data to back up their decisions. A vocal minority may want this stuff, but I want a BMW with a manual transmission....guess what? BMW doesn't want to make them because the numbers say it isn't worth it...and they are right. So is Apple.

Don't like it? Buy a Windows machine and use USB-A ports until the cows come home.

I'm not saying it isn't correct, just that I'm stunned. I just can't imagine that huge phone that needs two hands outsells the XS by 3-4x's. Perhaps it is a one off this year since few upgraded from the X and you have a large number of holdouts from the 8 Plus and earlier getting the bigger phone they wanted? I'm surprised.

More of an issue now, because its impossible to use one hand mostly with these big phones... It'll feel the strain.

Thank goodness for "Reachability"(General >>Accessibility) its needed more than ever now.

The XS Max doesn’t look that big. It’s the same size as my 8+, which I have no issues operating with one hand.

I buy 7 or 8 personal phones a year but I don't trade them in each year. I agree on trading in something for that much loss is pretty wild but to each their own really.

again, the screen in 16% larger. the phone physically is the same size but because the screen is now edge to edge you will have much farther to reach on the XS Max. i'm not saying you personally can't do it, but don't assume it won't be an issue because it wasn't an issue on the 8 Plus or earlier, those had smaller screens.

The Max is an amazing device. I believe the XR will eat heavily into XS sales.

I don’t feel the XR is nor the XS. I feel the X last year picked up a significant amount of sales and most are keeping their existing X.

No surprise. If you are going to get a XS, may as well get the Max for an extra $100. The Xr will likely be the best seller, but the XS Max ain’t no slouch itself.

Surprised so many people are opting for the 512 gb model though. What are they storing on it?

XS Max, not for me.

Sounds a bit of a contradiction since you’re mentioning FCPX, which is a professional market software just like Logic X is, and iMac Pro being THE most powerful Mac ever.

This is my theory. one reason I didn't want an iPhone X was that the screen was smaller than my 7 Plus. No way in hell I was going to go to a smaller screen!
.

No doubt the XS Max is BIG. That said,

The XS is 62 X 135 mm or 810 sq mm
The iPhone &+ is 69 x 122 mm or 828 sq mm.

This makes the X only 0.7 sq in less than any plus. Yeah, the X is a bit longer than the Plus, but a bit narrower than the Plus.

Discounting all of the above, if you want a Max, go for it. Or an XSR, not as big as the XS or the MAX, but bigger than your 7+.

Waiting for a client to pay me. 256 Space Gray Max in stock and waiting for me at ye ol' Apple Store nearby.

Lol, I love that "buy a Windows" answer. You yourself were just complaining about a manual BMW, guess you should buy a manual car from another brand.
Nice call on cherry picking too, I mean if I'm going to plunk $2K+ on a laptop I'd at least want the piece of mind to know that it won't come apart in at least 2 years and I can use it outside of a sterile clean room.

The people on an iPhone X would make up a fairly small percentage of iPhone users overall. There should be a significant number of users looking to upgrade from an iPhone 7 or older, and this will constitute a significant improvement for them.
