Next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a tweet, Kuo said that given TSMC's guidance indicated that revenue from 3nm chip production will not begin until 2023, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models may still have chips based on TSMC's latest 5nm process.

Kuo's information seems to conflict with a report from Taiwan's Commercial Times that claimed the M2 Pro chip may be Apple's first 3nm chip.

While the situation is a little confusing right now, it's clear from reports that TSMC plans to begin production of 3nm chips for Apple in the near future, so we'll have to wait and see which Macs they appear in first. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple has M2-based MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro models in development.

The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were released in October 2021 and have 5nm-based M1 Pro and M1 Max chip options.

I still love my 2021 16" M1 MacBook Pro. Just wish the display was 4K and having at least one USB A port. Other than that, I'm satisfied. I'm glad they are waiting until 2023 to release it. Two to three years release is good. I just don't think another 5nm one is even needed right now.

I could see a scenario where they jump straight to the M3 Pro with 3nm. The A16 will already be out to base it on and Apple has skipped generations before on their larger chips.

I don't think it's highly likely, but a man can dream

why 4k and not how it is? scaling wrong for macOS just to have a few pixels is a no go
I also wished to have usbA and a floppy drive and if there was room also optical drive

Conflicting reports: either 3nm is in or not. I doubt Apple would do a mid cycle refresh to go from 5nm to 3nm.
Yeah, it would be weird, for sure. I could see 3nm being for M3, starting with mobile (fall 2023 release)—I mean, that's typically where they start with newer/thinner chips. I'd still consider an M2 MBP in the spring of 2023 though...

The display isn't bad for the 16" don't get me wrong. But for the price, I felt like they could've went 4K. The display on the iMac 24" is very nice. Just wanted that to translate to these new 14/16" MacBook Pro's.
One USB A could've been done, but they've made up their mind to go all in on USB C. I get it.
