for these on the fence, m1 pro/max is more than enough for majority of ppl waiting for m2 pro/max. i'm editing videos with 45 tabs of chrome open and the m1 max just chugs along fine. there is 0 thermal throttling and besides just pure speed, i'm not sure what apple can do that would make folks buying a cheaper m1 14 and 16 vs a m2 14 16.

1) The M1 Pro is almost certainly not that much slower than the M2 Pro will be.
3) The M2 Pros might retail for $200+ more than the M1 Pros. (See: M2 Air.)

I think this is spot-on. It'll be a 20% performance boost. And Apple may well create a new tier of M2 Pro/Max machines, alongside a discounted M1 Pro series (suspect they'll drop the M1 Max, leaving just a single M1 variant machine in each screen size variant).

The only worry I have is that they might use the next release to fix "bugs", like the poor screen refresh issues despite ProMotion. But then again, all the signs are that this isn't considered an issue for Apple considering it affects the iPad Pro range too.

What other "bugs" might they fix, though?

Is there really any disaster looming over most of us (except perhaps Apple short-term shareholders) if Apple doesnt release the upgraded 14"/16" MacBook Pros until 1Q/2Q 2023?

I would just make sense to go for 3NM for the pro and maxes, because as they always introduce the base first, that one would always be competing then if it had major speed increases with the pro model. But yeah from a tech perspective it does make less sense but we'll see.

It makes sense for Apple not to release it within a year or so. Let' us have some fun with M1 Pro / M1 Pro Max Chip. I really hope Apple will introduce MacBook 14" and 16" in mid-night color in Spring of 2023.
I think it makes more sense to release desktop/workstation solutions like the mythical Mac Pro than an incremental MacBook Pro release. Apple needs to also sell an updated larger iMac also, and an updated Mac Mini IMHO.

This makes more sense imo. Why would Apple do 5nm for M2 but 3nm for M2 Pro? That’s two different architectures.
IMO, it makes a lot of sense for yields. M2 is larger than M1; M1 Ultra could be struggling for yield, given how long the wait times for top-spec Mac Studios are; M2 for the unreleased Mac Pro — if it’s really two M2 Ultras stacked together — will be enormous.

A step down in lithography could really help keep a lid on the die area of these chips. That matters less for M2 (regular), given that the area is smaller and the typical consumers of those chips are price sensitive over performance.

I still love my 2021 16" M1 MacBook Pro. Just wish the display was 4K and having at least one USB A port. Other than that, I'm satisfied. I'm glad they are waiting until 2023 to release it. Two to three years release is good. I just don't think another 5nm one is even needed right now.
Agreed about the USB-A. Just today happened to me that I had to leave in a hurry with my 16" and didn't have a single USB-C adapter with me - I couldn't read the host's USB stick :(

I'm reasonably sure Apple would like a yearly release cadence for the M-series of chips, but can't do that right now because of supply chain issues and ongoing trouble in China.

  1. Air and smaller MBP comes first with an M upgrade over summer, creating sales and hype.
  2. Larger MBPs in the winter to catch the Xmas period.
But Apple's having to go for 18 month gaps.
This. They did 18 months for the iPad Pro AX chips; I imagine it just wasn't feasible and profitable enough to keep parity with the iPhone's 12 month cycle. I imagine it would make more sense now to have the M series update annually since they can get a lot more bang for the buck-- but I don't have enough information to say that they would if they could. (Maybe 18 months is still the sweet spot even without supply / production constraints.)

new 14/16 in March 2023 at the earliest , apple updates processors every 18 months, m2 showed after 20 months, ipad pro with m2 also after 18 months. they will not show a new m2 pro or m2 max since they released studio with m1 max 6 months ago, no chance

How does it make sense?
The MacBook Pro 14" & 16" was released on October 25, 2021. It makes no sense for Apple to release a new MBP within a year or so Just so they can upgrade to an M2 chip. I rather wait and give time to Apple to not release an incremental upgrade. Take the time to bring non-incremental upgrades.

I bought a MBP on sale about a month ago. Rationale:

1) The M1 Pro is almost certainly not that much slower than the M2 Pro will be.
2) When the new Pros are released, it will probably be a long time until they first go on sale.
3) The M2 Pros might retail for $200+ more than the M1 Pros. (See: M2 Air.)

So I could have waited an indeterminate amount of time for the privilege of paying $300-$500 more for an M2 Pro that's somewhat faster, or I could have just bought an M1 Pro. I decided to do the latter.

I have a feeling that there won’t be an update for a while and that when there is one it will be incremental. As we saw with the Air it’s not guaranteed that it will be a straight across the board linear improvement either.

Maybe! But the issue for Apple is that if they ever switch to a 12-month release schedule after this then a lot of people will very pissed.

How about 5nm for October this year and 3nm for Summer 2023. Maybe this evening we get another rumour of 4nm in between?

So the new MBPs might be out in Spring, then I’m expecting an M2 iMac and Mac Mini in the fall; I’m guessing the new Mac Pro will be the main feature of this fall’s Mac event.
Agreed. Why release new MBPs this fall when the only new product they need to release to complete their 2 year transition timeline is the Mac Pro.

I think it's going to be an incremental upgrade whether you see it this fall or see it in the spring next year. (and I don't think the feelings of people who bought the M1 Pro / Max MBPs are a factor). I think it comes down to, again, what is feasible and is best for their own bottom line. Which might be 18+ months, who knows. Heaven knows Tim Cook likes to get as much life from a given part as possible.

Because they expected to have the status of owning the "latest and greatest" for six months longer? Or because they purchased one thinking a new one wouldn't show up for a number of months? Yeah there will always be people like that. Lots of people have pointed out that the current hardware is still fantastic and doesn't automatically become less useful because something faster came out. Just don't update your OS :p (That's always the thing that's made my Macs slower.)

I strongly disagree. Two to three years is forever in tech, so two to three years release is not good. High end M2 MBPs are due in 2022, not "waiting until 2023." If M2 MBPs were not to be announced until 2023 it would be because of serious supply issues, not for any smart business motivation.

You chose M1 a year ago and that is fine for you, but more modern M2 architecture is now due.

MBP prospective purchasers now paralyzed by indecision! Especially given an expected price increase. What to do, what to do!
There should be zero indecision at this point. If one's existing box has not died just wait and see what October brings.
