The only downside to using 5nm would possibly be more heat than M1 Pro/Max so the fans may be on more.

This seems very confusing. Please clarify. Is it 3nm or 5nm Apple is going to be using?
That is the crux of the confusion - one source stares the M2 Pro and Max will be based on a 3nm process, while another source states it will be based on a 5nm process.

In other words, nobody knows for sure if it will be 3nm or 5nm.

The display isn't bad for the 16" don't get me wrong. But for the price, I felt like they could've went 4K. The display on the iMac 24" is very nice. Just wanted that to translate to these new 14/16" MacBook Pro's.
One USB A could've been done, but they've made up their mind to go all in on USB C. I get it.
Technically the 14/16" MacBook Pros have a higher pixel density than the 4.5k 24" iMac if I'm not mistaken. the MBP is actually a better display in almost every way than the 24" iMac, other than actual physical size (depending on one's needs).

Nobody who isn’t bound by an NDA anyway…;)

Is it possible the 3nm chips are destined only for the new iPad Pros, and the new MBPs will have 5nm?

If so, this is good news for those of us who want a new iPad, and for those of us who recently bought an M1 Max or Pro MBP and don't want to get too jealous ;-)

so weird though the MBP have been going on big sales here in the USA
It makes sense for Apple not to release it within a year or so. Let' us have some fun with M1 Pro / M1 Pro Max Chip. I really hope Apple will introduce MacBook 14" and 16" in mid-night color in Spring of 2023.

I just hope they downsize the body size and weight of the 16". I have a 2017 15", and compared to that, the current 16" is a gigantic behemoth. At this point, all I can do is hope Apple offers a 15" Air.

Honestly this doesn't surprise to me at all.
The A15 on which the M2 is based was released on 5nm, and the M2 was launched in the MBA/13" MBP on 5nm.
While it would've been nice to get a die shrink for the M2 Pro/Max, I imagine i'd be a good deal of work porting the design to 3nm. I imagine Apple'd want to save that for the M3 if they can get away with it.

MBP prospective purchasers now paralyzed by indecision! Especially given the expected price increase. What to do, what to do!
I’d initially planned on waiting for the M2 MacBook Pros to upgrade, but considering the release schedule of the M1 and M1 Pro/Max, I went ahead and purchased a 16” last Fall. I had a feeling that Apple was moving away from a yearly update schedule for Macs to a 1.5 - 2 year schedule.

I mean, what would the point have been? The 16" model has enough resolution that it's "retina" (60 pixels per visual degree) if you're looking at it from 14 inches away, or further.

How often are you looking at your laptop screen from less than 14 inches away? Doesn't seem like a scenario that Apple really needs to optimize for.

4k is super arbitrary unbound from a screen size - DPI is what you should care about, and the 16" is much better than the 24" in that regard - 254 vs 218.

Yes, last fall it was an easier decision. Now it is much harder, with so many conflicting rumors.

I bought a MBP on sale about a month ago. Rationale:

1) The M1 Pro is almost certainly not that much slower than the M2 Pro will be.
2) When the new Pros are released, it will probably be a long time until they first go on sale.
3) The M2 Pros might retail for $200+ more than the M1 Pros. (See: M2 Air.)

So I could have waited an indeterminate amount of time for the privilege of paying $300-$500 more for an M2 Pro that's somewhat faster, or I could have just bought an M1 Pro. I decided to do the latter.

I'm reasonably sure Apple would like a yearly release cadence for the M-series of chips, but can't do that right now because of supply chain issues and ongoing trouble in China.

  1. Air and smaller MBP comes first with an M upgrade over summer, creating sales and hype.
  2. Larger MBPs in the winter to catch the Xmas period.
But Apple's having to go for 18 month gaps.
