For me, it's more of a why is it taking so long to put in a USB-C port when other devices already have it? It shouldn't take them up to 2.5 years (assuming they ship late in the second half of 2025) to integrate the USB-C controller and port into the case and mass-produce them.
You could say the same about the iPhone 14. Why don't they stop production, redesign the thing to put the USB-C port on, and start up again? Because they're obviously waiting until a redesign of the device to roll out USB-C. The next iPhone will apparently have it, as will the next version of probably everything else that now has Lightning, including these headphones. You're expecting a connector that's been in service for a decade to disappear overnight and it doesn't work like that.

I use the included case for travelling because it saves a massive amount of space in my bag vs. a fully enclosed case. They don't need a ton of special protection because I'm packing them next to like a book and an extra sweater -- not a bunch of rocks and sand. I guess if I was going camping or something I'd get something more substantial?
Cool. Yeah, I def need something more substantial, Im carry them around to lots of different countries / on planes and they can come in contact and jam up against all manner of things and equipment in my shoulder bag.
I got this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08VN94QNH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It barely increases the footprint of the Max's, so highly recommended if you need.

Apple Music is about to have America's biggest stage as the Super Bowl's Half Time Show's sponsor. No doubt AirPods Max will appear on heads and around necks all over the Super Bowl. It would make sense that they'd release a refresh. ahead of the show.

I'm going to guess that we're about to see an AirPods Max refresh the same way that the HomePod 2 was launched: AirPods Max are kind of niche so I can see them just releasing an update with a video in the coming days.
