Kuo: New Apple TV to Launch in Second Half of 2022, Lower Price Possible

The latest has “partial” HDMI 2.1 support. Enough to be valid, yes, but missing some fun features. Would like to see them all implemented. Also fix Photos and Screensavers to work with match frame rate and mode.

I find two stereo paired OG HomePods with ATV 4K better experience than I would get from sound bar only Sonos Arc. I certainly feel my money was well spent on ATV. But I have old TV Samsung 55” KS8000 from 2016 and secured 2 OG HomePods before they sold out.. If I were buying new TV today with built Airplay and ATV+ app, I would certainly skip buying media streamer not seeing point, just hookup my HD-Blue Ray player and proper surround system.

So bring the 4kapple TV to $99 for the 32gb and more people will jump, i guess
That's really what it should have launched at.

Storage space is one of the only really stand out differentiators for Apple TV.

Gaming on the Siri remote still sucks and is the other. Sell a regular remote with voice control like everyone else, drop the price, and sell the fancy remote Alacarte to the almost nobody that wants one because if they are going to game on it they'll use a controller.

Storage isn't much of an influencer for most people these days because they aren't downloading movies, they are streaming them. They need storage for apps.

An Apple TV stick $59- Model like Today with storage (32GB) $89-$99 and a "Pro/Max" model "$149" for that rare person that needs a crap load of storage because they still download movies in HD.

Put an M1 in the Apple TV you cowards.
I know you were joking.

They should put a different version of the Apple TV app on the Mac Mini that fully replicates the streaming box, toss in the Siri remote like how they used to give you a remote for an i-Mac,and there you go. Would almost be a spiritual successor to the original Apple TV.

When you have to cut prices...it simply means you have no value to add to justify a premium. Maybe Apple should spend more time hiring people that actually want to show up and work.
The Apple TV has never really done a compelling job of justifying it's premium, which is why its literally the worse selling streaming device on the market year after year after year since it was released.

When redesigned and pitched as a gaming device, it made a jump in sales... until people actually tried gaming on it and the same experience was offered on $40 streaming sticks that worked with an Xbox controller.

The first Gen that was more of a media server was where that justification lived, though tech at the time truly did make that a hobby device. Today, most people don't want to buy or download movies.

Apple TV as a home hub.... that Google and Alexa speakers do better.... was a value add for a very small number of people.... because HomeKit, with again most people reviling as a Smart Home platform except for the Apple devout, sucks as a platform even for the IOS faithful. With Matter launching it's first phase this year, all of us with IOS and Apple devices will soon be set free and be able to use them without HomeKit along with our other devices and all thousands upon thousands of products that will never support HomeKit.

Apple's Home ecosystem desperately needs...
  • Cheap stick-based Apple TV
  • High-end Homepod replacement
How can I switch from Amazon to Apple's ecosystem with such massive holes in their product lineup?

Apple TV 4K is great for my home cinema.

But am I really meant to add a $200 4K box to a 21" LCD television in my kitchen?
No go for the cheaper ATV HD for the kitchen at 21" you will gardly see the difference between 1080P and 4K anyway

Talking with people who use a lot of streaming TV services; Apple TV device is not on their TV! It mostly Amazon's Firestick and Fire Cube!

Cheaper device. Fine. What I'd love to see is to add all necessary hardware/software to a new M2 mac mini to allow you to run "apple tv" as an app...have remote capabilities and any other necessary hardware. Have this new mac mini just be the new and improved Mac Mini so you would essentially shut down one product by combining two. This would give Apple Arcade a compelling gaming "console" to run on and make a pretty great family room device as well that would do much more than just stream videos.

I’ve owned 2 Apple TV’s. Tbh next time I upgrade my entertainment system I’m just going to get a Samsung with everything native and it’s own soundbar. The dire state of universal remotes is part of the reason, but mainly I don’t think I need one anymore and there really isnt any benefit.

Our ideas pair well.

I’m surprised Apple has not touted the “use your iPhone/iPad as a remote for AppleTV because it just works” as a feature or as a base to reduce costs for a unit without.
To cumbersome to be anything but a backup option. Nothing beats the cricket bat remote, but there should be a lot more Siri control available.

I don't really understand the idea of a cheap stick device. The only thing that makes the Apple TV kinda worth it is the specs of the processor etc. If you have a stick, then there's no A12, and no access to as many apps, which is is dumb, because then you literally can just use the app installed on your tv to watch Apple TV+ or your itunes movies. Can someone please explain why that's a good option, other then it being "cheap"?

What are the chances they finally make an ATV that has working bluetooth that can connect to more than 2 devices. Been waiting a decade for that.

I mean these things have to sell because Apple’s name is on it. I have a 4th gen ATV and the current 4K 32GB is using the same chip my 2015 ATV has? That’s why I didn’t bother buying a new ATV. What’s the point when a 4k Chromecast does basically the same job? The biggest free streaming Apps like Pluto, Tubi, CW, Peacock, ABC, NBC are on all the devices. Apple TV+ is also on Chromecast.

I rarely use my ATV, I much prefer the Chromecast. It’s cheaper and pretty much does the same thing as the current 4K ATV. It even plays games via Stadia which is not my thing. But that’s good news if they drop the price. The 4K ATV should have an asking price of around $89-99, no more than that.

Edit: I just saw the specs and both the 4k boxes have an A12 and the FHD’s use the A8.

Will be interesting to see if they go along the streaming stick route, what they’ll do remote wise.

Considering the current Siri remote costs £60 standalone they’ll need to create a much cheaper solution, or not ship it with a remote at all.

Would it be entirely controlled through an iPhone/iPad? Would they create an Android app so as not to alienate that segment of the market?

The TV app on the Mac is terrible, so anything to make it better

And that's another thing, the Chromecast includes Google Assistant that's included with their remote. IIRC, the Fire Sticks also do that as well with Alexa at a much cheaper price.

The other thing I prefer about the Chromecast over the ATV is the size. The Chromecast are much smaller vs the ATV.

I imagine that as well. Also the price difference for what they do is too big and as far as Voice Assistants go, Alexa and Google Assistant beat Siri.
