Oh looks like me leaving Apple TV due to pricing is an issue for others as well.

Needed a new Apple TV...it cost nearly $180+

I bought 4 Amazon Firesticks and still saved some money AND its a much, much better software OS/device.

Unless Apple TV goes into the $50-70 range with a whole new OS I won't be going back to Apple TV.

Sounds infinitely doable if Apple are creating a product with A12 CPU with no ethernet port, USB powered and with the old style aluminium remote.

You'd also expect that Apple would fill a $139 price point with the 6th gen AppleTV and then produce a 7th generation range topper at the usual price points but with A13 or A15 CPU.

A15 might offer pro-motion 120Hz frame rates as an added bonus feature.

A12 is a little behind the times if Apple were at all serious about putting games on the AppleTV box - base model iPhone SE is now on A15 (2020 model was A13), Basic iPad is on A13.

What a bizzare, loopy question. Most people spend 6/700 on thier tv'
Most people spend $600 to $700 on a laptop. Apple isn’t targeting that group either.
I’ve owned 2 Apple TV’s. Tbh next time I upgrade my entertainment system I’m just going to get a Samsung with everything native and it’s own soundbar. The dire state of universal remotes is part of the reason, but mainly I don’t think I need one anymore and there really isnt any benefit.
My Apple TV remote turns my TV, receiver, and hue lights on with one button press. Unless you still have a blu-ray player, why would you need another remote?

I have been an AppleTV user since the 1st GEN. Since the HD and 4K versions, it has gone downhill in video quality when using Airplay and Streaming LiveTV. It fades in and out from sharp to fuzzy like it buffering. It is not the internet, I have 1 GIG FIOS. I have tried both wireless and wired to the AppleTV. I have tried every setting possible on the AppleTV and my tv to see maybe if the video settings were to much for it to process and so on. I decided to finally switch to a Google Chromecast with Google TV and it works perfect wirelessly. It pained me to switch, but I had to. It is really annoying trying to watch sports when it doesn't stream clearly.

For now, I still think Roku is the better option — tons of flexibility, and while it doesn't have all the features you'd get with Apple's hardware, you can still watch Apple TV thru the app, take advantage of Airplay, etc.
No argument, but WHAT are Apple's hardware features that make it better than Roku, or a smartTV using Google's Chromecast? It seems to me that Apple TV is horribly overpriced in this day.

Same as any other modern Apple product... ecosystem integration. Face ID for app logins, keyboard handoff, screen mirroring, remote control on iphone ipad and watch, common access to paid apps, homepod audio, etc. I guess you might quibble about those being "hardware features", but I'd say that's de facto at this point since the only way to get those features is to be running some flavor of iOS, which means you need Apple hardware.

Apple needs to focus on codec support and

TrueHD, DTS-HD, and especially AV1 codec. AV1 is 30% better than NVENC which is roughly 30% better than h264. Next gen gpus and CPUs are going to have hardware support. I expect a shift in codec use where HEVC is the new x264 and AV1 becomes king. Would be really nice to see my server not need more HDDs.
