A lot of people were waiting for Apple to put out a decent laptop that didn't double as a toaster / wind turbine. I know I was itching to sell my 16" Intel i9. So when the M1 Max came out, I sprang for it the day of announcement. Will be a long time before I do so again.

I am hoping my payments on the M1 Pro version will complete the day the 3nm version is released. I won't need that, but I will buy it.

In addition to the M2 chips (and perhaps faster memory, SSDs, and slightly larger battery capacities), the M2 Pro's can feature HDMI 2.1, the latest SDXC tech, and of course FaceID.

If Apple is concerned about security with FaceID, it can be limited to (an option for) logons while Touch ID can still be the main authenticator for ApplePay purchases and system authentication/changes, etc.

Don't think much will change with the upcoming update. Will be the usual performance upgrades. Would be nice if Apple could release it in a new colour.

Apple really thinks people will buy a new laptop every other year?
This. We replaced the 2013 MBP at the end of last year so 2021 - so 8 years. The 2019 MBP is working fine right now (and still has Apple Care) but is getting a little long in the tooth now that I occasionally use the spouse's 2021 MBP and since I use it daily for work, maybe in 2023 (or 2024) we'll replace it. If it was just for home, it would be 2024 or 2025 or even 2026.

They are designed (one hopes) to last longer than a phone or watch with fewer potential updates each year.

There is little need for the 14 and 16 Pros to get any new features for the next 5 years. Maybe Face ID but that’s it.

Only a very small niche of users who already own M1 Pro or Max would really find the necessity in upgrading. The low hanging fruit has already been picked by the M1 and M1 Pro/Max/Ultra. The M2, M2 Pro/Max/Ultra is likely to get those still on 2015 and earlier and maybe some 2016/2017's.

Apple has really backed themselves in a corner here with this first generation of Apple silicon. Its gonna be hard getting users to upgrade to future generations unless they implement lots of planned obsolescence.

They could add a 5G data connection option, a better gaming experience, new colors, Face ID, Centerstage, an even better screen and better native app support. No Netflix app on a Mac is a slight bummer. Yes, you can stream from the browser but only in a proper app can you download a show to watch offline.

However, maybe Apple is thinking AR/VR is the future of computing.

Wrong. There are all kinds of things (memory bandwidth, SSD speeds, WiFi, USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc.) that continue to evolve. Plus of course the many thousands of lines of improved code from v1 to v2. Maybe even give us back the removed TB port, but I am not holding my breath <sigh>.

Note that none of those things require chips made on 3nm process.

The OG models were amazing, but I think an M2 Max with 96GB of Ram and 30-40% better GPU performance would be pretty amazing.
Comfortably close to a 48-Core M1 Ultra (like I have, with 128GB), but on the move with a mini-LED display.

I think that Apple indeed considers AR/VR as very important in the future. The huge 2022 increases in available RAM, for instance, very likely have some longer term motivation. My guess is AR/VR.
