Apple is unlikely to release any new Macs or iPads for the remainder of 2023, according to a series of predictions shared in recent weeks by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Macs

Last month, Kuo said Apple was unlikely to release any new MacBooks with the M3 chip this year. All existing MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are equipped with M2 series chips, so any new models would presumably be equipped with M3 chips, which effectively means that Kuo does not expect any new MacBooks at all for the rest of 2023.

Earlier this week, Kuo added that the 24-inch iMac would be updated next in 2024, ruling out an update to the all-in-one desktop computer this year. All other desktop Macs, including the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro, were already updated in 2023 and are highly unlikely to be updated again until 2024 or later.

Macs by Date Last Updated

  • 15-inch MacBook Air: June 2023
  • Mac Studio: June 2023
  • Mac Pro: June 2023
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro: January 2023
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro: January 2023
  • Mac mini: January 2023
  • 13-inch MacBook Air: June 2022
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro: June 2022
  • iMac: April 2021

iPads

Last month, Kuo said Apple was unlikely to release any new iPad models before the end of 2023.

Apple has yet to release any new iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, or entry-level iPad models this year. If that trend continues for the remainder of 2023 as expected, it would be the first calendar year with no new iPads released in the device's 13-year history.

iPads by Date Last Updated

  • iPad Pro: October 2022
  • iPad: October 2022
  • iPad Air: March 2022
  • iPad mini: September 2021

They will now update just after the holiday period... keep those receipts!!

Actually, Id just be happy for them to release hardware and software when ready... not rigidly sticking to some sort of 'release schedule'.

Bring back the 'it just works' and reliability.. and a few more surprises!

That's disappointing, but not surprising.

I miss the days when products were released strategically before the school year started, or before the Christmas season. It seems that all the cool stuff is going to happen next year.
There's always something just around the corner...

Despite all the criticism... the vast majority of people buying things this fall and winter are going to pick up a great device... whether or not its a few months or a year or more since its release.

It's just anxiety inducing to think about it... so make the best decision here and now if you need it, buy it.. and don't regret it, just enjoy it.

so iPads are 12+ months without any update - seems like a lost opportunity
Macs, only iMac and the 2 13" models are "due" and the 13" MBA should be kept in sync with the 15, so why would they update the 13 MBP?
and iMac has been discussed enough this week

AND, October still has 11 days to go, and then there is November ...

Not sure why some people get upset about this. These yearly product releases are getting old and are heavy on the wallet for something incremental. I’m victim to it, but at the same time I’m happy for a breather. Next year there is Vision Goggles, likely new AirPod headphones upgraded to USB-C, most certainly iPads, new keyboards, MacBooks, new iPhone of course … and lord knows what else … I’d rather save the rest of this year to decide what my upgrade strategy is for next.

iMac is clearly the biggest joke of them all. Probably couldn't squeeze the margin they wanted by putting in M2 and maybe bumping the storage.
I don't have one, but Ive used one and I have to say, for the majority of their target customer.. its a fantastic all in one.. pretty much nothing else on the market comes close.

Most people will do fine for years and years with that M1

Why disrupt MacBook sales before the end of the year. If they release several iMacs next year to catch up to the speed of the MacBooks that would work out just fine while they speedbump the rest. Just hope they do something new by spring.

Of course, they could update the last M1 to an M2 now and cause no such disruptions... and it "make sense" given that yet another M2 in the wonder product is launching months from now. Apple could spin: "now ALL Macs have our latest & greatest tech inside, just in time for the holidays: Buy now!" without any kind of negative effect on the rest of the mix. And those holding out for that update could buy that computer now... vs. waiting many more months for it.

No new iPads or iMac for this holiday season will result in some amount of lost or deferred sales for Apple, but the amount of lost/deferred sales is likely to be negligible to their enormous bottom line. Likely have a lot of parts they need to use.

M-series chips have always been on an 18-month cycle. Some of these rumors were exciting, but deep down, we all knew.

And yet, one of the principal arguments slung for Apple going Silicon by "we all" was that they would no longer have to wait for Intels annual updates anymore. I'm not sure this is how "we all" expected getting off those annual updates was going to go. But maybe that goes with another goodie from back then: "not having to pay the Intel premium means we can get more powerful Macs at cheaper prices." ;)

But seriously: there is no cycles to be judged in 2 iterations of anything... no patterns to nail down in 2 iterations, etc. Flip a coin: heads. Flip it again: heads. I proclaim that all coin flips forever after will be heads. Obviously, I will be wrong.

We probably can't take a good shot at identifying some pattern until about M4 or M5... because these early years are overwhelmed by Covid and Supply Chain effects unlikely to repeat in increasingly "normalizing" times... if one believes they are normalizing. Even 3 consistent coin flips won't project the fourth with any accuracy at all.
