Im assuming to compensate for the battery?

Yes and It is merely a guess, but if you look at the trend, recent iPhone has been getting thicker since iPhone 6. And if they intend to get 5G inside ( possibly the smallest 5G phone on the market by then, since no one is making phone at this size anyway ), they will need more battery.

Thats true.. I miss how thin the 5 was. But i also really miss being able to comfortably hold my iPhone 7. I dont have the biggest hands!

One of the tech writers has described the measurement of the rumored 5.42 inch phone; if you measure the diagonal from bottom right to top left at 5.42 inches, add a pinch for a bezel and look straight across. It is not much taller than an iphone SE and definitely shorter than an XS. I'll be in line to get one first thing if the specs are correct.

For sure. I thought it would be about the same size as a 7?
Yes, about the same size, but still smaller :)

With the same bezel width as the XS, I calculate the 5.4” would be:

11S (5.42”) 2.58 x 5.23 (est)

For comparison:

SE (4”) 2.31 x 4.87
7 (4.7”) 2.64 x 5.44 weight 4.87 oz.
8 (4.7”) 2.65 x 5.45 weight 5.22 oz.
XS (5.8”) 2.79 x 5.65
XR (6.1” ) 2.98 x 5.94
Max (6.5”) 3.05 x 6.20

If the bezels do shrink a bit, it’ll of course be slightly smaller. My guess for weight is 5.40 oz.

I am excited to see how close your predictions are. That would be amazing though

The baseband Modem are already combined together with Qualcomm X55 and 7nm. Otherwise no one sane would be putting it inside Smartphone, other than for the purpose of being the first and showcasing. The RF Front End QTM052 shown by Qualcomm last October were already the industry leading solution.

It is not that they cant fit it inside the 5.4", it is just there will be less space for battery. Either Ming is wrong, or Apple has something up its sleeves.
Well, the X55 isn’t shipping, but yeah it will be available before Apple needs to lock the 11S design. QTM052 will be replaced by the QTM525. I’m sure there will be more X50/QTM052 phones released before the end of the year (presumably Qualcomm made those chips for a reason) but I don’t pay much attention to non-Apple phones so I wouldn’t really know. Qualcomm will announce their new 8xx Snapdragon SoC later this year as usual and it’ll have the X55 no doubt.

Not sure we’ll see any X55/QTM525 devices before 2020 but who knows? They were never going to be ready in time for the September 2019 iPhones so it doesn’t really matter to Apple how late this year Qualcomm ships. I would think engineering samples are already available.

I think it’s due to the XR also being OLED so the difference may not be much different and chances are will still be a lower price.
Interesting... how much more expensive is oled compared to lcd? If the xr successor ends up being slightly more expensive, shouldnt that mean the smallest one (5.4”) is actually the xr successor?

I don’t think the storage will jump to 128GB min and 1TB max on the 11S. I expect the same as the 11. My guess is:

6.1 $749 64GB
5.4 $999 64GB
6.7 $1,099 64GB

I suspect something is amiss with this rumor. Kuo is good but not perfect and has had some large misses before. We’re going to get a much larger OLED screen (6.1) with theoretically the same camera for $150 less? Even if the camera isn’t as good as the 5.4/6.7, the existing pricing makes absolutely no sense.

Maybe the 6.1 will still be cheapest but 5.4 goes down in price. We used to get a 5.8” phone for $999, now 5.4? Nah. This pricing lineup would look whacky.

WOW!

Amazing!!!

I take back everything I ever said about Cook being a cheese eating bean counter who is doing nothing more than milking Steve's old ideas from 15 years ago to protect his stock options while bringing no new vision to the table!

A phone that is the same size and shape as all the others and does the same things as the last one you bought in 2015? That ONLY costs two thousand dollars??

INCREDIBLE. I humbly predict that this is more important than the announcement of the iPod and the announcement of OSX combined!

Only the 5.4/6.7” are in the “super premium” flagship tier and will have 5G (reportedly). The 6.1 in 2020 will only be LTE, and will have other less-expensive tech so it can be sold at a lower price.

I think the 6.1” “R” model will continue to be in a less expensive ($750-ish) tier, with the 5.4 and 6.7” having the most expensive tech and being priced at $1,000+.

Personally, I think Apple products are garbage, but if they make a 5.4" iPhone, I would consider getting one, only because Android doesn't make anything reasonably sized anymore.

Is it anyone else upset like me that their 5.8 high end model is getting shrunk to 5.4?

wouldn’t it be more logical to make the 5.4 inch model the SE version and the 6.1 and 6.7 the pros?

Nothing is set in stone let's wait and see.

Yeah I was wanting to downsize to the 5.8" from an 8 plus, I think a 5.4" will be a little too small. 5.8" is the equivalent of a 5.0" 16:9 screen, 5.4 is equivalent to a 4.7". Will have to see what the lineup looks like when it arrives next year, not too happy about an even bigger Max handset, the 6.1" is likely to be missing features I'd want, and the smaller pro will be going smaller than I'd prefer... yes first world problems but even so 📱

Not really, when you consider the 5.4" model is likely intended as a tether to the Apple Glasses. If much of your display time is through glasses, a bigger display isn't needed.

A 5.8 with the notch area removed up top and a matching area moved at the bottom would be closer to 5.4”.

5.4 inch Iphone will be easier to operate with one hand and lighter than X, with 5g and finally Qualcomm modem, with smaller bezels and design resembling Iphone 4. Apple finally makes very compelling upgrade for me from X. Wifi 6, 5nm chips, longer battery life and anything else will be icing on the cake.

Wifi 6 is already on iPhone 11 Pro this year and exceeds more than 5 hours of battery life over an X.
