This would be the first time Apple’s ever done this… Not saying it won’t just that it’s completely out of character and would break with the each-chip-represents-each-gen trend that started with the original iPhone.
The iPhone 3G had the same CPU as the first generation iPhone, so not quite the first time.
But then, the CPU wasn't so much of a concern, and getting 3G in was the big step up. 3GS was the first iPhone with a (much) faster CPU than the predecessor.

Makes total sense, the A15 is so far ahead of the competition. Samsung can't keep up. There is no reason for them to keep innovating on processing power.
1. They have more than enough.
2. Competition can't keep up anyway.

Better to spend resources elsewhere.
Apple needs to focus on putting a quality modem out. I don‘t think they can match the Quality modems that Qualcomm is putting out.

Well, the A15 Bionic is faster than all Android flagships from 2022 and even from 2023, it will be.

This just isn’t believable at all to me. So the “new” iPhone 14 that’s released in September of 2022 will have the same chipset that the “budget” iPhone SE has … what’s the sense of the SE again then? Just lower the price of the “mid tier” flagships and make one of them the budget model.

Maybe it happens, but this one is almost unbelievable.

There is no way the iPhone 14 is going to have the same processor as the budget 2022 iPhone SE. iPhone is still a premium product but also a mature product where it gets harder and harder to innovate, adding a new chip helps motivate people to upgrade and makes it easier to market.
I hope the Pro gets 8GB RAM, especially if 8K becomes a thing.
One could easily have said ”theres no way a budget iPhone is gonna have the latest processor as the current flagship lineup”. But it does . Chips are pointless now and more of a selling point on a Mac, not mobile devices. People buy new phones for more storage, better cameras and other obvious features. No one I’ve talked to in many years says “my phone is just too slow”.

So in March 2022 the budget iPhones SE gets the A15 … and 6 months later the regular new iPhone gets the same, then year-old chip? No way. Go home, Kuo, you‘re drunk.

The way Apple would do this is to simply remove the ability to purchase the 13, instead of pushing it down the line and charging less for it. Exactly the same way they eliminated the Apple watch 4 when they brought in the 5, 6, 7 series. None of them are significant enough upgrades, so keeping the 4 around would cannabalize the sales of the new models.

Exactly. This would be apples way of dealing with both making profit and the chip shortage. I don’t think people appreciate how even more dire the chip issues could become based on forthcoming world events.

Because the M1 adds no features to the A-series that are useful for a phone. And M1 would be slower and consume more power than an A16 on a phone.
I agree with power consumption but tbh the Pro lineup could use a thunderbolt controller and USBC port for ProRes transfert, which the M1 would have baked in. It’s something they can probably add in a A series chip, but at this point why not put an M1 and throttle it a bit?

The A14 already supports USB-C transfers at at least 5 GB/s as it's offered on the 4th generation iPad Air. No need for an M1 for that.

Thanks for the insight, @Kazgarth . I know a lot more about their 4nm process than I do the 3nm. Very, very minor differences from 5nm. Apple will have to make their gains in the design, I reckon.

So q4 2022 production of 3nm - what will be the first Apple product with it? Wait until A17 in fall 2023 or m3 earlier in year? What do you think?

Wouldn’t A16 for base and A16 Pro for Pro models make more sense?
What would be different about an A16 Pro? More battery eating cores?

The A-series chips are designed to provide power without using too much battery power. If you "turbocharge" an A-series it would go through the battery in no time. CPU performance is not something that iPhones lack.

At this point the chip is pointless aside from how it interacts with things like the camera. Running apps on a five year old iPhone and a new one is nearly an identical experience.
Yeah, my iPhone 7 Plus with A10 was pretty decent, even compared to my iPhone 12 Pro Max with A14. I could notice some lag here and there on the 7 Plus before I sold it last year, but it wasn't bad at all. Mind you, the 7 Plus only has 3 GB RAM, so that could account for the lag.

The main reason I upgraded was actually for the camera.

Anyhow, given how fast these chips are these days, colour me surprised that iPhone SE got A15. IMO, there is no need for it in the SE from a performance standpoint. I don't know if A15 is preferred by Apple for other reasons though.

I can see this happening. Push more customers to more expensive phones. It does seem like they would have to lower the price of the base model though.

Also could be supply chain influenced. Might not have enough capacity for new chips.

If this rumor is true, and there isn't any significant new features for iPhone 14, other than a larger 6.7" Max size, Apple should lower the price of iPhone 14.
