Does Apple ever produce anything for four months before shipping? Hard to imagine Apple would sit on supply for that long.

Regardless, by November, we’ll be in flu season. Apple would be nuts to schedule an in-person event in California for four months from now, when California’s governor and various local officials are liable to have the state in lockdown again.

Probably, but if you happen to have an early 16GbRetina MBP that can’t officially run Big Sur (except in a VM) the Mac Silicon choices so far haven’t been compelling. And no, I don’t know the 1 other person in the same situation as me. Actually looking forward to repurposing my existing MBP, a fantastic piece of kit from 2012 (?)

I‘m looking at that upper tier Mac mini too. Sadly I don’t think this will happen until spring next year at the earliest. There are too many pressing products to get through first.
From the larger iMac, to MacBook Pros and the Mac Pro, they all need to be addressed this year.
I would think they’d save the Mac Pro for last and do it next year, no?

I’m a programmer and just hop the new MBP HAS M1X Chip and has at least 8GB dedicated memory for it video and I’ll be just happy as kid in a candy store.

How come Apple didn't attempt to muzzle MCK, and if they did, how come he's still talking?

this is his job that he's been paid to do for many, many years. he is not a leaker, he has never given away direct, blatant proprietary information.

I caved in and bought an M1 MBA. I figured out that it is easy to resell since it is relatively cheap.
I have an M1 Air. It's a great little machine. You made a good choice. Only thing I wish it had was a bigger screen, which is why I've got my eye on the new Pro's coming out soon. But of course, cost will determine what I do when that happens. I'm sure the Apple tax will be outrageous--it always is. Sadly, I'm a sheep in a big flock, so I'll probably pay it.

I can't wait for these machines. I have a 2017 iMac Retina 5K and trust me when I tell you this, my 2018 iPad Pro is faster than iMac on photo editing. I don't know how that is possible or what kind of magic Apple A series CPU's have, but a 2018 iPad Pro on paper seems much much slower than an 2017 iMac with Radeon 580Pro, but on Affinity Photo, everything is instant on the iPad, however on my iMac, I have to wait quite a lot between operations. And it has 32GB Ram, so give me a 32GB Ram MBP 16" with M2, it'll be at least 3 times as fast than iMac I'm pretty sure.

I have cash waiting for this, can’t wait for it to come out. I have bad eyes so a big screen is a must for me. Will be a nice upgrade over my 2015 15” MBP.

It’s likely I won’t be able to afford the full price so will have to wait for it to appear on the used / refurb market.

One concern I have is that we are getting very close to the time for the M2 chips to come out. I don’t want to buy a M1 MBP 16” then a few short months later the M2 MBP 16” comes out …

Maybe Apple are now waiting themselves for the M2 to be finished?

There’s also the whole thing about never buy the first version of a new Apple range, as the second version will be vastly improved… (and it’s debatable if the M1 16” should be regarded as a first version or as a refinement of the smaller laptops)

I think it’s almost certain the 16” will have something other than a M1 chip.

Can't be that different? Not enduring uncomfortable heat on my chest or lap, no loud fans going when I'm trying to take a nap, not needing to live in dongle hell when traveling with my portable, not fumbling for the volume button because the Touch Bar is on another screen... Every other tech improvement aside, the quality of life situation improves tremendously for those of us ready to make the jump to the Apple silicon Macs.
That’s pretty much how the MacBook Air and Pro today with the M1. Also, Apple had non-touch bar models for years. The heat complaint is very weak here. Loud fans when you are trying to take a nap and who says the ports are really changing? The only thing I had to buy after upgraded to an M1 is a dual USB A/C thumb drive. I hardly use external devices these days.

M1 MacBook Air and Pro are not 16". I have a non-touch bar 2015 Pro and I've held off on upgrading in hopes Apple would see the light. They have. The heat complaint is very real. My Pro gets uncomfortably hot. And because it heats up, the fans kick on. I am TIRED of listening to fan noise. I've had to close the lid to put it to sleep at night so that I can put myself to sleep. Completely disassembling it and adding top tier thermal paste and cleaning all of the fans and heatsinks only helped a little. The cases leaked already. We know there are more ports: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/04/21/macbook-pro-stolen-schematics-ports/

I'm glad the current Pro works for you. I'm also glad I won't have to settle for one as I eagerly await the next generation Pro that fixes all of the stuff Apple got wrong (for me) in the current gen while offering a big leap in performance at the same time.

The current M1s can already use more than 8GB for video - that's part of the point of unified memory - you can use nearly all of it! Here's the memory available to the GPU in Davinci Resolve on my 16GB Mini:

Man the new MBP can not come soon enough. Got a 2012 MBPr here, hoping to get something new this year.

Yeah. I bet a lot of people would love a 16" M1 MBA, especially those who don't need the power.

I really hope they offer a matte screen option. The shiny glossy displays are useless to me.
