I'm curious how true lossless would work. There is AFAIK presently no lossless codec specified, even as optional. Bluetooth 5.0, if both devices (audio source and e.g. AirPods) are fully capable of it, could handle barely enough bandwidth (maybe) for raw CD grade audio; and ALAC or FLAC or the like could shrink that down to maybe half, making it perhaps possible given the real world limitations of even Bluetooth 5.0.
There was reporting a bit ago that some high-ranking Apple executive had said they felt limited by Bluetooth, and stopped themselves there. Apple doesn't often make off-the-cuff mistakes when speaking to the press. I could imagine them releasing AirPods that supported BT for connections to previous models of iPhone and non-Apple devices (just as they work now), and... something proprietary (an extension to BT or something entirely new) for connections between the new AirPods and newly made iPhones (and iPads, Macs, etc.), with some on-connect "start with BT and if both ends support it, switch to new format" logic.

I’ll be replacing my 2nd Gen Airpods with the new Pros as soon as they are available.

Your post is very succinct , sums up why even after having offers in my basket for Airpods Pro as well nagging notifications I never succumbed . I will wait and see what the upgrade model offers and also the issues that may arise .

I think you've never listened to lossless or hi-res music on really good headphones with a good DAC/Amp and then listened to the same material on the AirPod Pro's. What's the point of an inferior device having the capability to play a pure music stream?
What is the point of downgrading the stream just because of the device they will eventually be reaching? It certainly doesn’t help anything.
The cheapest, bottom of the barrel earbuds from the 80’s/90’s don’t seem to have this problem. Nor do any of the original apple earbuds even though MP3 is practically all that anybody ever listened to on them.
Apple made them worse and people were happy to pay for the privilege?

Well because they look just like the Pro’s ??? come on now apple use a lil common sense ??. The average consumer don’t know the difference ?

my current air pods pro sound seem to be getting worse so may upgrade if there is a different colour and improved sound and battery life.

I would like it if Apple added a feature in the control panel to adjust the sound profile. Some people want something with more bass for music. I rarely use them for music. I mostly use them for phone/video calls and podcasts. I want a sound profile optimized for voice.

For me, Air Pods Pro are the only Apple product I have regretted getting. They don’t stay in my ears well at all. I tried all the tips, and also bought those black foam tips - these help, but only a bit. Even tried different size tips for each ear. The right one never works well for more than a few minutes. Almost bought Air Pods 2 just last week because of this (definitely not the Air Pods 3 that look like Pros). I’ll probably buy the new ones, but if they don’t work for me the first day, I’m returning them.

You might be better off with something like the new Beats with the extra wing to hold them in your ears. Ear fit is such a personal thing. I seem to have very average ears and all of the Airpods fit me well and almost never fall out. Others, like yourself seem to have ears that just don’t hold any of the pods. Some other mechanism may be necessary.

Return them and wait. Seriously.

I've had my AirPods Pro replaced under the service program once already, and with the "clicking" sound returning while on calls, they sound like they're due again. I've talked to other people who have already gone through four replacements. Since AirPods are notorious for not being "repairable," I don't think they are using refurb hardware replacements, but simply have never figured out how to permanently fix this design.

Given the unsolved ANC degradation problems, I'd never advise anyone to buy this generation of AirPods Pro at this point. I'd wait for and proceed cautiously to AirPods Pro 2 instead.
I have AirPod pros that were manufactured in Nov 2020 and they have static and clicking. They failed the test and the store said they would replace them. After an hour they figured out that Oct 2020 is the cut off manufacture cut off date for the recall. So now I have worthless AirPods that were purchased just over a year ago so out of warranty and too new for recall. Ugh.

Costco has a good deal for pros but with your post I can see the issue still exists. I don’t want to just throw my money away if they don’t hold up and aren’t going to be covered.
