This sounds so much like Cook’s Apple let’s revamp a basic phone to a premium device by jacking up the cost, but not the features.

I am on the verge of retiring my iPhone 12 Pro Max to either a iPhone 17 or 18. I guess I am going pro max again, as the Slim sounds underwhelming and costly.

Something isn't adding up with these specs and rumours. I can't really imagine that they'd put out this brand new design for a phone, increase the price to a new record setting price, and then put an A19 chip instead of A19 Pro.

If they price it somewhere in between, that seems odd too. Why risk exciting the Pro and Pro Max owners with a new design that they might buy instead of a more expensive Pro?

I don't think we've seen the real story yet on this.

Two things I don't understand about the iPhone 17 rumors:

1) Why is Apple burying the iPhone 16 before it is released. I thought the inclusion of some basic AI in the iPhone 16 was supposed to make the 16 attractive.

2) I've read general descriptions of the iPhone 17 as involving a major redesign. The folding iPhone for 2026 qualifies as a major redesign. The specifics I have read so far on iPhone 17 look very incremental.

I want this device. Current Pro Max is too heavy, I have no need for all the cameras or zoom. Don't game so CPU is fine. Want top of the line display, super light / super thin, same battery life as current Pro. I don't use a case as I like to feel the device. It's my dream device.
If 0.49 lbs is too heavy, I suggest seeing a doctor for an evaluation.

It makes perfect sense if this is iPhone Air. Emphasis on design and form factor, not specs or performance. There’s a ton of people who couldn’t care less about the camera as long as there is some camera to take random photo here and there. Or couldn’t care if the chip is ‘normal’ or Pro because it won’t make difference reading emails and browsing safari. What they care about is how the phone looks and feels; no awful camera bump, thin design, light weight, premium feel. If this is iPhone Air it will be hugely popular I believe.

If it is lower then the pro models and this simplified camera is at least as good as current base iPhones with maybe the pro motion screen with the thin design , light weight , and premium feel , priced lower then the pros and or in between them they might have something.

Max Tech said it on his YouTube page that the thin model may turn out to be the Apple Fold iPhone

I never thought Apple would do something as gimmicky as a fold or flip phone because of Apple’s super high quality standard but we will find out next year

Yes indeed, it looks like this is indeed going to be Apples first foldable iPhone and here's the video:

No way Apple will release flip. How do I know? Apple is about real use cases and if they introduce some feature it needs to have some real benefit to the user. Apple does not add features just because it might be cool. There is no real use case to ’flip’ a phone in half. It’s pure gimmick.

My question is, what will the rest of the lineup look like? Perhaps this is the cheaper Plus, but the rest of the models will be even nicer than this one? Although, I doubt they'd be able to shove into a thin frame all the camera tech so many people have gotten used to on their Pros.

This is obviously going to be called the iPhone Air. It follows their pattern with iPads where there is an entry level model, a midrange model that’s sleeker but technically similar, and a pro model that has all the features.

Seems to be popular at the moment and a way to make increasingly bigger phones pocketable though.

I will say that the fold may impact used values if buyers think the hinge will be an issue over time.

Rumours are very inconsistent about the new model. Not sure how the new model can be priced above Pro Max with these specifications.

If I remember correctly first MacBook Air was also priced high although it didn’t have amazing specs. Thin and light was the selling point. I can totally see iPhone Air that is thin, light and very premium, without camera bump. It will have worse specs but those wont be the selling points.

I think that 17 Slim = SE 4.

But very special SE 4.

Fewer features than all the other iPhones.
Much thinner than all the other iPhones.
More expensive than all the other iPhones.

And that's courage.

;)

The thought occurs that if Apple are using SE4 to be a big test bed for their modem, why couldn’t they make this ‘thin’ a test bed for other technologies they are thinking of putting into future mainline iPhones? So the single camera might be using a bigger sensor, periscope, or mechanical aperture.

There’s only so much testing that can be done in a secret lab on a handful of bespoke samples.

Will it still ‘feature’ holes in the screen?
Not sure about anyone else but when I purchase TVs and computer monitors I don’t get them with holes in the screen.

Considering how rarely I use the two secondary cameras on my 11 Pro, I would actually be interested in this. As long as it’s not much bigger than my current phone. They should’ve ditched face-ID for a touch-ID power button though. Would’ve given the whole phone a 'lighter' look with just a small hole punched in the display. The stainless steel frame in my 11 Pro is rather heavy. The new titanium one in the 15 Pro is probably slightly lighter but I image this new device will be much lighter than both. Interesting to see a new direction from Apple. The deal breaker is gonna be the price as always when it comes to Apple though…

It might signal a move by Apple to utilise process shrinks as a driver for making iPhones (and macs) thinner. Look at how the m4 iPads have gone for clues?

Just a quick sketch, this might be what iPhone 17 Air looks like

I keep waiting for this thing to make sense, and so far... I got nothin' lol
Throwing designs at the wall and hoping something sticks.

First they made the iPhone shorter and narrower (mini).
Then they made the iPhone longer and bigger (Plus)
Now they‘re making the iPhone thinner and slimmer.

If that doesn’t stick either, you know what to expect in 2-3 years.

To everyone claiming that this doesn’t make sense due to the rumoured cost, it makes perfect sense. It’s obviously a foldable device hence the need to make it ‘slim’
