CPU's and Modems are two very different things. CPU's are a dime a dozen (hence why there are so many companies who make them). How many modem producers are there? If this were CPU's I would 100% say apple will match it, but it has yet to be done so clearly it is much more challenging than doing CPU's (not to mention clearly the engineers they got from Intel can't figure it out or they would have done it years ago- like rumors said).
You’re not wrong. I’m just saying that eventually, someone will surpass Qualcomm. Whether or not it’s Apple remains to be seen.

By the time this highly anticipated "halo" product ships, some of the rumored design features will likely be dropped, such as the Apple 5G chip. It's improbable that Apple will release a mainstream product with that chip so soon, especially given its history of delays.

This is clearly the iPhone Air
Exactly. People are hung up on the idea that it's supposed to be the most expensive 17 model, but that's likely just wrong. It seems very much like this is the "iPhone Air"; a thinner, lighter, less powerful, AND less expensive alternative to the Pro model, just like Apple offers in the iPad and Macbook lines (although the iPad Air is no longer thinner and lighter than the Pro).

So it's going to have lesser camera capabilities, a less durable frame, but will cost more because it's thinner?

Headline really buried the lead with the Apple-designed 5G chip, I'm actually excited about that!
Just 7 months ago it was widely reported Apple shut down its 5G modem division as they found it too difficult and expensive to get around Qualcomm's 5G patents. I don't think this is happening as that rumor was so widely reported and makes sense a lot sense compared to this out of the blue report from Kuo. It was reported Apple would dedicate its resources to developing its own 6G modem probably ready sometime near the end of the decade.

I could see this appealing to people who almost pride themselves on not understanding or even liking technology. This could be the KISS (keep it simple) iPhone.

There is another group that might like the thinness for the fashion side of things.

Personally both of those groups are alien to me 🤭

Folks, don't fall for the tutti-frutti, phoney-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll Apple PR "leaks." Apple has already locked-in the iPhone 17 lineup. These "leaks" are designed to build hype that the phone is so "bleeding edge" that Apple had to "change at the last minute," because the product wasn't ready to delight customers.

I really liked when there was only one iPhone available.
I do too. I really liked when Apple put all of their resources and best ideas into one fantastic product, ensuring that it was reasonably priced, and shipped it. All of the product segmentation that creates multiple tiers today is artificial. All of it. Apple's goal has shifted from making the best iPhone possible that will satisfy customers, to making the most profitable iPhone possible, which involves making "dud" iPhones to pad the lineup and push the top tier price higher.

What's more likely is this will slot in the middle and push the Pro prices up even higher

I like it how we are getting all of those "exciting" news about iPhone 17.

Meanwhile, we are all expecting that iPhone 16 will be meh, yes?
Apparently you weren’t around for the iPhone 16 news last summer.

Maybe a part of Apple's AI push? Standard iPhone 17s would have the CPU/RAM necessary for AI, but they would also have the same boring, safe design, and an iPhone SE 4 might not have the RAM necessary for AI, so this would be the AI Phone. (Lol, iPhone AIr). It would be less expensive than an iPhone Pro Max, but would have the larger screen that is popular these days, as well as a new design to create some buzz around a new iPhone for the first time in forever. The single camera and cheaper Titanium also points to this being a less expensive option than a Pro Max. Or maybe something that would cost the same as the current Pro Max, but with the Pro Max increasing in price as a more premium offering.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today shared alleged specifications for a new ultra-thin iPhone 17 model rumored to launch next year.

Generic-iPhone-17-Feature-With-Full-Width-Dynamic-Island.jpg

Kuo expects the device to be equipped with a 6.6-inch display with a current-size Dynamic Island, a standard A19 chip rather than an A19 Pro chip, a single rear camera, and an Apple-designed 5G chip. He also expects the device to have a titanium-aluminum frame, but with a lower percentage of titanium than used for iPhone 15 Pro models.

The analyst added that while there will not be an iPhone 17 Plus, the new ultra-thin model will not be a replacement for it. Instead, he said the device will be an all-new model, with its main selling point to be its "new design" rather than specs.

With no A19 Pro chip, a single camera, a slightly smaller display than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and a focus on design over specifications, it sounds like the ultra-thin model will not be the so-called highest-end "iPhone 17 Ultra" after all. It is now unclear exactly where the device will be positioned in the iPhone 17 lineup, but that will likely become clearer as it gets closer to launching. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, so there is still a lot of runway for more rumors.

As I was reading it sounded as if they were describing the iPhone SE 4.

Thinner than M4 ipad pro, 24/35mm 48MP camera and two days battery.... I would buy one like that straight away.

Never thought we'd agree on much of anything, but I'm 100% with you here....100%

I want this device. Current Pro Max is too heavy, I have no need for all the cameras or zoom. Don't game so CPU is fine. Want top of the line display, super light / super thin, same battery life as current Pro. I don't use a case as I like to feel the device. It's my dream device.
My dream device is no device at all. How many years can this still be fun or interesting? It's literally the same thing as it was ten years ago. A sheet of metal and glass that you look at, open a stupid app, read stupid crap, scroll, read stupid crap, scroll, read stupid crap, put away... and then repeat over and over and over again, ad nauseam, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year and soon, decade after decade. It's boring. I'm over it.

What has been overlooked is that the plus is being discontinued. it will likely slide in close to the price point of the plus it is replacing. Its display will be larger than the 17, but smaller than the Pro Max. It will appeal to those looking for thinner and lighter, the pros will continue to appeal to those wanting state of the art cameras, and spatial video capabilities.

I'm still not seeing how this device is to be priced more than the pro max. Like the mental gymnastics apple is going to have to pull to convince people to pay more FOR LESS is wild. This seems like it should be replacing the plus model and be priced as such.
These rumors are extremely early, so more will come out next year and well get a better idea. If the slim is indeed gonna be more price than the pro max then no way they put inferior features in it compared to the pro max.

When the iPhone X came out it was the highest priced state of the art technology phone on the market. State of the art Face ID
