Because then you don't need to have to carry a cable with you (when using the Pencil with the iPad). There are pros and cons for either option, but to say that you cannot see the reasons for the current solution is playing blind.

Who doesn’t already carry a cable with them?

Carrying around yet another small dongle vs carrying a cable you’re already likely to have on you is an apple vs orange comparison.

It’s just a common sense solution. Nothing blind about it.

i feel Apple made a switch to lightening at a wrong time. And now they are stuck with it on iPhones as another switch to usb c would be too soon. damn. would have loved USBc across the board

Well it's been 6 years since the switch to the lightning cable. That's a longer life than the original 30-pin cable, and they wouldn't be abandoning it yet, just switching a higher power / more computer like device to USB-C. I wouldn't be surprised if they migrated devices that transmit data to USB-C, and kept charge-only or input devices (Apple Remote, Pencil, Airpods) on Lightning indefinitely.

I’m looking for an iMac too, but I don’t want to buy one with a 2+ years old cpu.

A 6 core CPU, 16 GB standard RAM and a base configuration with SSD would be more than enough for me to immediately order one.

An anniversary redesign would be great too, but only if it solves thermal issues.

True true. I actually did some digging and think this year will be a significant update, but not a nice new redesign.

What you described is definitely worth upgrading too and I would do space gray if there's an option.

Not a chance in hell Apple replaces Lightning on the iPad. It doesn't make sense: if I were traveling with all updated Apple products I would need a Lightning cable for my iPhone and a USB-C cable for my iPad. Why?!
[doublepost=1536590037][/doublepost]

Don't forget all the Apple accessories have Lightning ports: Magic Mouse/Keyboard, AirPods, Beats, etc. It makes no sense to switch the iPad to USB-C.

... and more importantly for the iPad, the Apple Pencil.

Well, not to doubt a stranger on the internet ;-) but, I read article after article talking about how there is no consensus on how USB-C audio is to be implemented over USB-C. So this is the documented, officially adopted standard that is utilized consistently throughout the industry? Or is it competing standards that haven't been adopted by everyone and applied differently by different manufacturers, and not fully compatible with each other?

I think what it really comes down to:
1. you have the actual connector (USB C in this case)
2. there are multiple protocols that can be pushed through it (i.e. USB 3.1, Thunderbolt 3, USB 2.0)

At the end of the day there is always more than one way to build electronics, by choosing different protocols, developing your own, etc.

I think what the person may be lamenting is the fact that there is a class of computer audio peripherials (imagine multichannel sound mixers/etc) that need far more bandwidth and lower latency than some simple headphones for a mobile phone. I don't think they should use the same standard. I want my pro audio interface to be thunderbolt. But this is overkill for my iphone+headphones. Unnecessary cost and complexity.

I will not be purchasing another iPhone that still makes use of the Lightning interface, no matter how much longer Apple tells me, a costumer, that I am wrong.

If ipad gets USB-C, how will the apple pencil be charged? Another dongle?
It is rather ridiculous, isn't it? Is there anyone in charge of product design and development at Apple anymore?

Dongles wouldn't have been a problem for the pencil if the transition to USB-C had been completed in 2016. In any case, I bought a pencil. Still haven't found a compelling need to use it. Steve was right. My finger still works better than any stylus that I have to keep track of and keep charged, whether it requires a dongle or not.

Nope, 30-pin Dock connector introduced in 2003 and replaced by Lightning in 2012. So Lightning’s got 3 more years to go before it makes it as long — so really nowhere near a replacement point, especially considering their stated goal of creating a long lasting connector that would address all their future needs for many years to come.

Where would we be without Ming?

Ahhh,..with only 1.5 days to go, I'm presuming we'd be okay. He is often wrong as well you know.

Great, no bundled fast charger on new iPhones.

Should, at the very least, be bundled with the OLED iPhones.

Why? = More expensive for Apple & will not make a difference to the purchase decision. Very smart move by Apple.

Again, the wording is somewhat ambiguous, so it's unclear if Kuo means the 12-inch MacBook will be refreshed, or if it will be entirely replaced.

Of course it is! He's hedging his bets with less than 2 days out because he doesn't know and needs to be vauge enough that what he said is what you think he said and in doing so was right about it, duh!

With the rest of the world. Literally no one in my immediate circle knows Ming. We are a much smaller group here than we like to believe. :p

anyone else wondering if USB-C in new iPad pros means a new Apple Pencil? because they really push fast charging that pencil through the iPad, but that won't be possible anymore... (not that it was good design to begin with, but carrying that little lighting adaptor is a hassle)

Hopefully a female connector in the pencil.

There are so many confusing elements of both this and the new Mark Gurman report. There is no information about what products will be announced at Wednesdays keynote, I wonder if that’s been kept on lock down by Apple and these guys haven’t been able to get that, normally they say what will be announced at keynotes in their reports.

I still think just having the Apple Watch and iPhones at the keynote isn’t enough, yes I’m really looking forward to the new watch but Apple could at least announce iPads as well.

I guess we will know by Tim’s opening words, if he says “I will dispense with the updates” then we know there’s more but if he invites others up to talk about Apple stores and recycling then we know there probably won’t be much.

I'm not buying another iPhone or iPad until they have USB-C ports. I already use USB-C for everything else (Macbook Pro, Dell work laptop, Nintendo Switch, power bank) so my iPhone and iPad are the last relics I need to carry around a second cable for. It will be so nice when I can charge/power everything with one cable. Come on Apple!

true compared to 30pin it been around for long. But the MFi wasn't so prominent with 30 pin cable. It picked up big with the lightening cable. Which mean any switch would have a bigger impact on the consumers.

I wonder if there is a FaceID v2.0 in the works? TouchID version 2 was so much faster than the version 1. If faceID could be enhanced like that would be great.

Pretty much every other flapship phone includes a fast charger. A 5W charger on the 6.5 phone will probably take 6 hours to fully charge which is hardly ideal. Also most customers probably wouldn't care if including a fast charger costs Apple a few cents more per phone.

As someone who wears a continuous glucose monitor, I can tell you, we will not have non-invasive continuous glucose monitors (CGM) anytime soon. The technology for a CGM has just recently become good enough to use reliably. These reliable models are all invasive. Optical CGMs are a LONG way away. I wish I were wrong, but I just don't see this happening on a watch before the end of the decade.
Afraid you are wrong on that one.

https://cnogacare.co/portfolio-item/combo-glucometer/ - They announced this last year. My aunt is currently in the process of acquiring one.

The 30-pin connector came out in 2003, it was used in iPods well before iPhone was ever introduced.

With the USB-C cable Lightning already supports USB3 speeds, and 5Gbps is sufficient for iOS devices. USB Power Delivery is also supported, providing up to 18W for iPhone 8/8 Plus/X and 30W for iPad Pro.

There’s no compelling reason to switch the port from Lightning to USB-C at this point, there are literally billions of cables and chargers, and at least a billion devices, that use Lightning (mostly with USB-A).

Apple’s gone to a lot of trouble to support USB over Lightning, and they’re not going to switch the port out just because a few people don’t want to carry a USB-C to Lightning cable, which will soon be available even cheaper through recent MFi approvals (and connector updates).

When this article states they are going to "replace Lightning with a USB-C interface on 2018 iPad Pro models" don't they mean they are replacing the current USB plug end with USB-C? I highly doubt they are changing the lightning port on the ipad itself.

My only dream for the watch is blood pressure monitoring, of course technology isn't here yet for something like that.

No, the Dock Connector was around longer than the current Lightning standard. The 30-pin Dock Connector was released in 2003. The Lightning connector was released in 2012. So the Dock Connector lasted 9 years, and the Lightning connector has been around for only 6.

They might as well not include a charger with the iPhones if it's going to be 5W again. I usually give them a break, but it is just pathetic at this point. Really hoping he's wrong.
